An NBA source has told the Orlando Sentinel that the Orlando Magic will match the five-year, $34-million offer sheet extended by the Dallas Mavericks to Marcin Gortat and thus retain him. The team would not be able to trade him until Dec. 15, at the earliest, if that's what the team wants to do.

Holy Macaroni!
I feel bad for Gortat since I know he wants to play some minutes, but I like it for the Magic since it will give them a good backup in case of some catastrophic injury to Dwight as well as a nice bargaining chip in any upcoming trades.

If Magic are still searching for a backup center, I hope they just bring back Adonal Foyle instead of bringing in Theo Ratliff
Foyle is a great character guy that is already acclimated to the team. I’m not saying that Ratliff isn’t a good guy, but Foyle is just a cooler dude.

wow, i am shocked by this move
the organization must really REALLY love the hammer. i have to imagine this is being done as a trade chip — i think, like otis said, you really can’t pay ~$6mm for the backup for your best player. i mean, for 10 mins a night he’ll now make about as much as jameer!
anyway, even if we’re matching to trade, two points (i) it’s a big gamble — if gortat fizzles or gets hurt or we’ve overestimated the market for him at this price, we’re saddled with a rough contract and (ii) as others have noted, it’s a huge step-up by devos since this pushes us WAY into lux tax territory.
all that said, you gotta LOVE the way our roster looks! esp if we can now nab barnes.

Maybe
This is a ploy as well, perhaps to loosen the strings on a trade involving Dallas in some way? You never know…Dallas is pretty stoked on Marcin so maybe this is to send them into panic mode to send us something in return for our trade exception…just throwing it out there.

Theres alot of reasons to keep Gortat if only for his level of play even at that price. Was discusing in another thread alll the other possibiliies of trading Gortat down the line, this deadline, next summer, in 2 seasons make the most sense. Its great insurance and we needed a backup C badly, and the twin towers live to compete against a Lewis/Anderson/Bass + Dwight combo, so we will see who wins that battle. Froncourt check. :)

WHY IS EVERYONE SAYING THAT WE'RE GOING TO TRADE GORTAT???
I dont understand what gives anyone the impression that we’re planning to trade Gortat, OR sign Theo Ratliff now. With the resigning of MG, we get a solid back up Center to relieve Dwight and we already have a somewhat 3rd/emergency center piece in Brandon Bass (who played C for DAL last season). Plus, I would rather have Adonal Foyle instead of this dude that Dwight murdered in the post last post season: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUMEZC5C9Eo
That is not good defense.

to address your point, i think he gets traded within a year b/c it is a helluva a lot of money to pay to a guy who can really only legitimately play one position, and that position happens to be manned by one of the 5 best (and 5 least injury-prone) players in the league. as much as we want a dream team, we have to be financially reasonable, and in my opinion $6mm is an awful lot for a 10-12 minute guy.
it’s analogous to the drew brees/philip rivers issue — you just can’t have too many long-term resources glued to your bench.

Thanks bro
For anyone else, its like Magic-8-Ball (the toy they sell at walmart/kmart)
On your Gortat point, I see your logic but if Im Otis Smith, Im only dealing him away if theres a deal that best suits our team for the long haul (another promising young center, etc.) That deal may or may not come this year but I guess I’ll have to get used to that when the time comes. For now, he stays and I hope they start selling Polish Sausages at Amway, no homo.

We can't trade him to Dallas at all
According to John Hollinger

By matching the offer, Magic also can’t trade Gortat for the next year without his approval, and can’t trade him to Dallas at all.

I dont mind that
He stays put here. Give him the money to backup Dwight the Beast and to fix up his BMW M5 that is unmatchable according to sources: http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/06/10/marcin-gortat-drives-fastest-car-in-nba/

gortat said before hed be happy to stay in o-town, but if hes too ticked off he could play poorly or not consent to any trades in 1st year, or get an injury, or teams lose interest. there are risks for sure.

I just did research on the CBA......I had thought they could turn around and trade him to the Mavs..... I get it now........
WOW……What a shrewd move. I was sure Smith wouldn’t do that to Nelson but like you said E:
Brandon Bass wanted to come here and the Mavericks should have braced for the possibility of the Orlando Magic matching Marcin Gortat’s offer sheet to stay with the team.
It’s not like they didn’t know what they were getting themselves into and they knew our options were limited as well. And who knows they may have a plan B also.

One thing is for shure, Otis is doing everything he can to win a ring, and if it dont happen then i will at least know that. The weakest link on this team is SVG. and that aint too bad.
by D-RAK on Jul 13, 2009 5:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
svg the weak link?
really? i disagree. i don’t think we have other weak links (so i’d be hard-pressed to have to pick one), but i certainly wouldn’t call svg one. i think he’s clearly been instrumental in building this team up to a championship caliber.

SVG
I just dont like his view on offensive rebounding, and think he needs to add some plays to go with the pic&roll he was so in love with.
by D-RAK on Jul 13, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think with the team we had last year, pick&roll was just the best option for the team as a whole. I’m not a strategist or anything so I can’t say what would be a good offensive plan for our line-up, but with VC, I can see our team running more than just pick&roll. Let’s just hope SVG takes advantage of all our pieces and create something truly awesome!

PRs were really effective, I expect to see the same amt of them I think. But to add what Nelson does is dribble penetrate, PR and create for himself, VC will do this alot too as an add.

And starting Bass might not hamper the O much, b/c Magic played pretty darn well offensively w/ Battie and I think his spacing on O will be near Bass' spacing. Cept Bass makes the 2 w/ the best of the league, and can really drive off the dribble too.
Alot of shooters who can play the 3 line or drive/pass incredibly if forced too, and with the beast of the league in the middle for alot of iso’s, PR rolls, putbacks.

I’m kidding…but if the sign and trade possibility is real…that Tayshaun for Gortat deal would be nice. As guess bringing Gortat back is a good thing…as long as he can learn to play with Dwight a little better.

…beacuse if they overpay for a guy who played 12 minutes a game; why didnt they just break the bank for Turkoglu during the regular season. A) The Finals high: DeVos didnt want to pay big $ back before we made it to the Finals B) Turk wanted out at all costs and Otis knew it back in November.

He wanted to be the guy on a team and still get paid.. If he stayed here he’d would be the 3rd or 4th option now that Jameer has finally (hopefully) put it all together. I’m glad he found everything he was looking for I really am… Now we can destroy him and his team and make him regret leaving :)

for the money and duration that turk got, i would not have wanted him back. he was great for our team, and gave us many fond memories, but at 30 he’s just not worth 5x$11mm. always business, never personal. i love what otis has done and couldn’t be more excited about our current roster, esp once barnes or wafer is added.

Gortat isn't getting overpaid, though.
His numbers are comparable to Howard when you take at his defense, his blocking rate, and his rebounding rate. Marcin is signed to a good contract. It’ll just look like much because he’s coming off the bench. As for Turkoglu, he isn’t a 25 year old starting-quality center (a scarcity in the NBA).

Years
Gortat will be 30 when this contract expires, Hedo will be 35 when his contract expires.
Gortat’s a tradeable assets, VC’s contract will be a tradeable assets, Bass is a tradeable asset. Hedo would not be a tradeable asset.
Whether or not you think we have a better team after this summer or not, there’s no denying we have a deeper, more flexible one.

Rebounding and defense
for 10 minutes a night is all we need. I can’t see us paying 7 mil for a backup C who would hardly play. Could Marcin start w/ Dwight going to the 4, Shard at 3, and Vince and Jameer in the backcourt? Doubt it, but it would be tough to pay Pietrus, Gorat, and Bass 16 million to come off the bench.
I think Ryan Hollins could be Dwight’s backup. 7 footer, athletic, and the same age as Gorat. And I think he would only cost maybe 2 million. He is not as good as Gortat but he could be good enough.
But its not my money so if we keep the Polish Hammer stacked with talent.

I agree, and it would make sense to keep Dwights min.s a tad bit lower this season esp. in games well in hand as to show Gortats potential and help Dwights healthy and energy. it might be very little but maybe it helps.
I think Lewis is still starting at 4, but giving him a lil extra rest with Bass/Gortat/Anderson will help Lewis’ energy and health too.

While its great to see him back, considering how much he wanted to go for more playing time, how motivated will he be? I know it seems like a silly question but I think it bares notice. And look, with Bass in the lineup, he may see a cut in pt even more.
So I’m happy to see him back at the same time, I wonder for him.

Theres some understandable rage over at the Mav's Blog.
But I’m really wondering if Mav’s Management didnt see it coming, there HAS to have been some sort of breakdown going on if most people we’re thinking that was a done deal. Brandon is already signed, correct? Otis totally spun his web, so to speak. I totally thought Gortat was a goner.
