Von Wafer would look good in blue
Now that the Orlando Magic have addressed our need for another big in Brandon Bass its time to look for help on the perimeter. Our depth at the guard and small forward position's went out the window when we lost Courtney Lee. Mickael Pietrus has to either start at SF or be its sole reserve. I am okay with this as long as we obtain an explosive perimeter scorer to come off the bench aka Von Wafer.
Last season Von Wafer averaged 9 pts. on 45% shooting while also shooting 39% from the 3.His ability to knock down the 3 ball consistently already fits into our system. Yes, he is a streaky shooter but so are most young guards in the NBA (did I mention he's only 24)
He has also demonstrated he knows how to play with a dominate center in Yao Ming. Which isn't that easy at thing to learn when your an aggressive scorer like him. This means the Magic can spend less time teaching Wafer about spacing and more time on the defensive scheme's the team utilizes. Courtney Lee was an aberration for a rookie last year with how well he could defend. So I am not saying Wafer is anywhere close to his ability but Wafer does have the athleticism and quickness to become a solid defender with the proper coaching.
If we were to get Wafer it would allow us to play the same style of basketball we played last year with Carter at the SF and Lewis at the PF. This lineup shouldn't be used for the entire game but would give us a potent offensive team for the end of quarters.
Signing Wafer makes sense in the long run since JJ Redick's contract is up after this year and he may not want to resign with us due to his many playing time conflicts. Wafer would give us security at the backup SG position for a long time at a very affordable price

I would be in for that too..
Wafer, Barnes, Kleiza any of the players will do.. Quality offense of the bench.. I am not sure how well Wafer defends.

Badly!
He’s essentially a Ben Gordon style pure shooter, only nowhere near as good.

Nailed it right on the head
He is a solid scorer. I will not use “great” to describe his scoring because some of you imply that would be a far fetched description. I would love him in Otown to create a spark as the second or third man off the bench. Hail Otis.
He's be a welcome additon coming off the bench or starting

All I know about Wafer is that he's not fond of passing the ball once he gets it.
Also, Rick Adleman gave him some real playing time this year and how did Wafer thank him? By bitching about his playing time during a game in the playoffs this year. Adleman sent him straight to the locker room. Think SVG would put up with him?

Guys have pride
He had a good reason to be angry just like Rafer Alston had a legit reason to be upset. All season the guy works hard has had alot of success and for no apparent reason gets benched when it matters most. Your telling me you wouldn’t be upset about that?
Wafer has alot of pride and that is probably what drives him. So yes he needs to make a name for himself before he can justify such a blatant objection to his coach but I like his attitude. We need some more fiery guys on this team

I understand the argument
I just think team first, and definitely not yelling at your coach mid-game, are traits I want associated with our team.
Oh........... well, never mind my argument. If the guy has a lot of pride, that makes it all better.
Kinda like Steve Francis right??? He had a lot of pride and disregarded his Brian Hill when he asked him to check back into a game (vs SEA).
Ya, good TEAM player was he.

Glad to see..
People jumpin on the Von Wafer bus. I saw him play a lot when I went to FSU and he is a very solid shooter and very consistent on the offense end, because he can score in many different ways. Of course, his D is a little bit in question, but in the NBA nowadays it’s all about putting that ball in the basket. Lockdown defenders have taken a back seat. With all that being said, I would love to see him in blue!!!!

If he can't defend, there's no way he finds his way on the roster.

Kleiza>Barnes>Wafer
I like the shooting % for Wafer, but we need people who can defend of the bench. If he doesn’t defend he isn’t an upgrade over JJ.

So he can't defend right now
that doesn’t mean he won’t learn.Could you say that Nelson, Hedo, or JJ were good defenders 2 years ago.No you couldn’t but SVG changed all that. SVG has a great defensive system in place that funnels everything to DH. Give SVG time and he will develop Wafer into a capable defender. He doesn’t help on his offensive game at all imo

A valid point.

After looking at the stats, Wafer appears to be an average defender right now.
adj. defensive plus/minus: +1.73
opponent PER vs. SG’s: 14.9
net defensive plus/minus: +1.2
eFG% allowed: 48.0%
Not bad.

Im confused
but how are we going to afford a player of their level. Didn’t we max out our MLE on Bass? I am probably missing something here so someone please correct me here.
Yeah, there's still some of the MLE left.

Something like $1.4m, I believe?

or just get the former team to S/T the FA for a portion of Orl's TPE and a consideration/2nd pick. That'll net a player of a 1mil-7mil potential salary.

I'll take Matt Barnes over Wafer.
I was somewhat disturbed by Wafer’s shot selection in the Lakers series. Then again, at times in that series, especially after Yao went down, his team mates tried turning him into the sole scoring option (which wasn’t fair but those guys were looking for offense anywhere)…so I don’t particularly blame him then for the shots he took. I mean he had to of had a much better shooting percentage than Ron-Ron who threw up the most shots for the Rockets in that series and probably had the worst shooting percentage for both teams (good luck LA with that guy). In the end, Wafer’s shot selection and little spat with Adelman in that series is my lasting impression of him for the moment (though I was a fan the guy before the series, barring the fact he was a Nole). I just have this feeling that Barnes will end up in Orlando and not Wafer.
Spreading that Calgary Flames, Montreal Expos, The U, and Orlando Magic love...get it on Twitter : KingJafi29.
I'd be okay with Barnes because it directly adresses our backup SF without having to use tricky substitution
but Wafer looks like he has a chance to turn into a terrific player in the NBA.
I’d be okay with Barnes but ecstatic with Wafer
I've been pushing hard for Barnes in these Wafer-Barnes debates
but I’m staring to come around.
Wafer obviously has more potential than Barnes, and is 100 times the scorer he is. Picking him is a good way for keeping the Magic competitive for a championship while getting youth for the future.
When I watched him in Houston, he looked like a talented scorer who didn’t pass or defend well.
But perhaps his passing issues were the result of Adelman’s system, which required Wafer to score, score, score since they had no one else who could. I remember Adelman pushing Wafer to be more aggressive and shoot when he had the chance.
I’m still iffy about his defense though. He doesn’t have the body type, and if he has just average defensive stats when he gets to play with Yao Ming, then I don’t see that much improvement if he plays with Dwight.
Defense is something that SVG could improve, if Wafer were to land here.
I think Ben hit the nail on the head, though. Von’s agent is the one that expressed interest in his client landing with the Orlando Magic, not the other way around. I just don’t see Von Wafer signing with the team.

Actually
Is there enough money for the Magic sign both Barnes and Wafer?
Barnes can provide insurance at the SF spot, and Wafer can replace Reddick as the backup 2.
I think it’s fair to say that he would be an upgrade over JJ, is it not?
Interesting, as
one of the two would get the 1.8mil left of MLE, but the other would have to be convinced of a vet. min. deal or get the former team to S/T, atleast for 1 yr and then the Magic can raise it or something. Esp. if the ’ship comes to town.
The only way is see us getting both is if we trade Redick and AJ to a team with cap space
like Memphis (35 million) or OKC (48 million) Unfortunately in order for a team to be convinced to do that we would have to throw in a 1st round pick probably
Then its not worth it
by Souwantmyname on Jul 12, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions
That wouldn't be enough money, no.

I think
Wafer makes a lot of sense if Rashard plays most of his minutes at the 3, with Pietrus backing him up.. They would have Anderson and Bass rotating at the PF.
If they plan on going about it as business as usual, I think Barnes makes more sense.
"No matter where you go, you are what you are playa"-Jay Z
I think the Magic will try to play like last years style
the problem is that Pietrus is not really starting material at SF imo. He’s fantastic off the bench @ SF and could actually start at SG but our offense wont be the same without Hedo
No, it won't be the same. It'll be better.
Carter will do Hedo-y things, and he’ll do them better.

Hedo-y .. that works.
