Orlando Magic Sign Brandon Bass; Matt Barnes, Theo Ratliff Potentially Next

Photo

More photos » Donna McWilliam - AP

As first reported by NBA.com's David Aldridge, the Orlando Magic have signed free-agent power forward/center Brandon Bass, formerly of the Dallas Mavericks. The deal is worth $18 million over 4 years.

Additionally, a well-connected source informs me that swingman Matt Barnes and center Theo Ratliff are the Magic's next targets. The source said the Magic assured Barnes that they wanted to get Bass first, before turning their full attention to him.

The 6'08", 240-pound Bass, 23, is a four-year veteran, spending the first two years of his career with New Orleans before moving on to Dallas. He may get an opportunity to start at power forward for the Magic, despite having played more than two-thirds of his minutes at center last season.

Bass has career averages of 6.9 points and 3.9 rebounds in 17.0 minutes per game, shooting 48.5% from the field, with a Player Efficiency Rating of 15.2.

More analysis at 3QC later today and during the weekend.

Don't love the move, but..

I think Stan can make it work somehow. I really was hoping for Anderson to get the bulk of the minutes, but Bass gives the team a nice change of pace to throw out there.

Theo is probably one of the best affordable C’s left so I’d be happy with him.

There is a reason

why you play for 7 teams in 8 season coughBarnescough. Just Roster fillers, but I suppose that’s all we can make a play at for now.

coughcoughbarneswasimportanttothewarriorsrunin08coughcough

Barnes was more important to the Warriors during their run in 08 than Pietrus was.. I believe Barnes would be a good addition to the team .

even better than Bass if he gets playing time

by Boney on Jul 10, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Barnes was better than Pietrus in the 2007 playoffs, sure.

.. he’d be a decent pickup and a nice bench player for the Magic, if he were to sign.

I really like Barnes, he’s somewhat erratic but as a bench player he would be a great pickup imo.

I too don't love the signing.

But if we can get Barnes and Ratliff, our roster is looking great.

Does anyone know if Anderson can play SF or C? Also, against bigger teams, are we gonna see Nelson, Carter, Lewis, Bass, Howard? That could be a pretty good lineup, with a bench of AJ, JJ, Pietrus, Anderson, Ratliff looking pretts solid as well.

And Bass is a 4, an emergency 3.

No, Bass is a 4, and a competent 5.

People get so caught up with height. Remember that Ben Wallace is only 6’9", and he did quite fine for a while. Bass has a 7’2" wingspan as well.

by TragicMatt on Jul 10, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bass plays 4 and 5.

.. he doesn’t play the 3. Like I’ve said a few times, height is overrated sometimes.

If Bass is truly a guy who can play 5

This is a GREAT signing.

That was my only concern at any stretch

That he was a guy who could only play 4. But I haven’t seen enough of him either. Hopefully you’re correct.

But that only means something if substantial min’s were played there. Consider me skeptical until I see it.

I'm telling you, it's been a weird offseason for me :)

Like I’m happy and sad at the same time with these changes. Not saying this just because I’m a fan of both teams, but I think Gortat will fit in well with Dallas and Bass will fit in well in Orlando.

It's a good fit for both teams.

.. the only problem is playing time for Bass, but I know SVG will figure it out.

I was thinking that too

I figured he wouldn’t be a starter here, but was wondering how much playing time he’ll get. I remember first seeing him in the Vegas summer league a couple of years ago, not at all knowing that he’d been stuck on the NO bench previously. He really impressed me and hopefully he’ll win people over here as well.

I think people will like the type of player Bass is.

.. I don’t think he’ll start, he may, but whatever the case may be, Orlando got a nice deal out of him – 4 years/$18 million is a reasonable contract for Brandon.

From seeing him at Summer League,

how does his frame look? Does he seem like someone who could put on 20 lbs or so?

If he got his weight up to 260, he could be a nice swingman between the 4 and 5 positions, almost in the McDyess mold.

i would most definitely start bass with shard and dwight.

but i doubt we would go after barnes at SF if we planned on bringing pietrus off the bench.

Did you watch the playoffs?

That is the man we signed. Regular season Pietrus was hurt/timid. Plus, Pietrus didn’t really start playing basketball until he moved to France at 16 or so. He is still developing his Basketball IQ, but there is no denying that his talent and upside are way above Barnes’.

Dude always drops 10-15 points a game on us. I would take him or Von Wafer, who are two great scorers. Either would be suitable in my mind. Theo Ratliff seems OK too, i guess.

this allows us to play two diffrent styles, I like it, and if things dont go so well, we have the trade exception, gotta admit lots of options for a already great team.

by D-RAK on Jul 10, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The only way I see Barnes + Bass working is this

Starters – Nelson, Carter, Barnes, Lewis, Howard
Bench – AJ, JJ, Pietrus, Anderson, Bass

Starting Bass leaves us w/o a back-up center. If we sign Ratliff then Anderson and Bass are in a logjam at PF. If we move Bass to the starting PF Then we have Pietrus and Barnes backing up at SF.

by Lee for three on Jul 10, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Last year we thought we had a logjam at the 2, with four players their.

I’d say that depth worked out pretty well. With injuries happening as they do, depth is a good thing.

actually,not necessarily...

If the Magic sign Barnes, consider that the beginning of the end of the J.J. Redick venture,as Redick only has one year left on his contract, and the Magic have a $8-9M trade exception, which means that lets say the Magic need a more reliable back up center or starting power foward(assuming we dont ge Ratliff or its not working out,or whatever) and go for a Antwaan Jamison, and lets say his salary is $10M a year….we can gap da salary of Jamison with the exception, and get rid of Redick, and then we’d have…

Starters=PG-Neson,SG-Carter,SF-Lewis,-Jamison,C-Howard

Back-Ups=PG-AJ,Russel Robinson,SG-Pietrus,SF-Barnes,PF-Anderson,C-Bass

If….I mean WHEN the Magic use the trade excepton during the season,I will personally GUARANTEE Redick is one of the player(s) traded,as we have Pietrus at the SG back-up spot, wth Barnes at SF.

You can't package a player and a trade exception together.

A trade exception must be combined with something—a draft pick or cash considerations—but it can’t be combined with a player for salary-matching purposes.

Dallas fan here...

Not to be disrespectful, but you guys overpaid. Brandon is a great athlete and strong as an ox (he could give Dwight a run for who has the widest shoulders), but he relies too much on his jumper (which is pretty as all get out, but inconsistent), and is not as good a rebounder as advertised.

He’s also not 6’8. 6’6 tops, and struggles to defend taller players (see Nene and Birdman in the second round).

I think if you put two of my best seasons together it wouldn't come up with the numbers he's going to have at the end of the season. -Troy Aikman on Tony Romo

Certainly a better deal than Cleveland got with Varejeo...

But I still think the price would have gone down if he’d been allowed to sweat a little longer. Portland wasn’t going to make a run at him until they got an answer from Millsap, and Dallas wasn’t going to get into a bidding war for him.

Gortat is already an elite rebounder. That’s a good deal for Dallas.

I can't call someone who averaged 12 minutes per game an "elite" rebounder, yet.

Like I say all the time, advanced statistics don’t take into account stamina or mental blunders.

Countless studies have shown that per minutes statistics, usually, translate.

Gortat is an elite rebounder and shot blocker because his rebounding rate and blocking rate are nearly identical to Howard. There’s no fluke in those numbers. Marcin is a legit player.

Advanced statistics (such as per 36 or 48) by multiplying a player’s 12 minutes by 4 (for per 48) DO NOT account for stamina.

That's true.

But telling me, Gortat would be on pace for 22/19 COULD HE play 48 minutes (like 82games does) its kind of an absurd stat to use in comparison… to anyone or anything.

"Shoot first, ask questions last" Rafer Alston

You can't use his per 48 minutes to assess what his numbers will be.

.. because he isn’t going to see time on the floor for the whole game. I suggest checking out his per 36 statistics on Basketball-Reference. That’s realistic.

He is a legit NBA player, I'm not disputing that.

That said, I’d like to see how many other NBA players received $7 million a year coming off of a year where they played 12 minutes. Keep in mind, he’s being paid $7/yr to remain a backup center as he won’t be starting over Dampier.

Rate identical to Howard? Again, we aren’t going to be able to see that ‘translated’ as Gortat will remain a starter. The only way it’s possible to see if he’s “identical” to Howard is if he one day becomes a starter. When that happens, we’ll compare his rebounding/block shots to Dwight Howard’s, until then, it’s really not fair make that comparison.

I gave him his due when he played well, you guys know that.

I do believe he’s a little overrated on this board. I saw a man that couldn’t receive an entry pass cleanly, couldn’t corral a loose ball, made countless mental blunders, had stone hands when rebounding (sans barehug) and often on the losing side of rebounding battles when challenged.

He was solid defensively for the most part, but like I said, I feel he was greatly overrated on the board. It’s just my opinion and I admit I’m convincingly in the minority with that one.

was a better fit with us but I like Bass too. I actually think the contract is pretty reasonable for a 23 yr old PF/C. But it looks like we will have a much more traditional team and I think Shard goes back to the 3. SVG knows how to maximize talent so I like the move.

Don’t like Barnes. Seems to think he is better than what he really is. But if he can accept a role on this team then it could work.

Ratliff? No wonder Gortat got that much money. Not that many capable centers out there.

Great signing

Nelson/Carter/Lewis/Bass/Howard, best lineup in the NBA? Certainly an improvement over last years Magic finals team. Less three point options but improved defense and rebounding. I think with his range and efficiency our eFG% will still be elite while of eFG% defense will be even better as he has the mobility to defend both the Hybrid 4’s as well as the bangers. I love this lineup!

Would rather see Anderson start at the 4

That would give us our really tall and hard to handle frontcourt lineup that proved difficult to defend last year and helped us reach the Finals. Bring Bass in off the bench to hold down the fort while the starters rest.

Howard\Anderson\Lewis\Carter\Jameer = 1 in 4 out

Howard\Bass\Lewis\Carter\Jameer = 2 in 3 out. Not sure how that would work. Dwight needs room to work in the post.

is going to be able to make things happen on offense next season. it’s about time he learned to work with someone else in the post because as he gets older his game is going to have to adapt to that sort of play. we have this offseason and all 82 games next season to get this machine running, and with the options we have on the court as well as through the trade deadline it seems like we get to watch this team grow even more.

Seems pretty easy to me

meer, vc, shard, bass, howard

Keep Pietrus on the bench where he belongs, providing fresh legs on defense and that offensive spark we saw in the playoffs.

Good signing. The best free agent available (outside, maybe, David Lee)

We should get Pops Mensah-Bonsu from Toronto since they won’t be re-signing him. Solid bench player at SF, cheap too.

I like Bass. He hustles his ass off.

Barnes is ok too, if you like insanely streaky shooters with sometimes questionable shot selection, but not a bad choice for Orlando’s system.

He only has to play 15 or so minutes

If he can put the ball in the net 3 or 4 times and take his open threes, that’s all we need.

bass

alright, nice pick up. he’s no dice (and he’s no sheed, for better and worse), but he’s a very solid frontcourt addition. someone else besides dwight to give us a legitimate physical presence. hopefully he’ll work hard and keep developing. a couple more solid, serviceable vets (and a trade exception in our back pocket for a rainy day) and we’ll be looking good

I don't like the idea of signing Ratliff. He's done, defensively.

- adj. defensive plus/minus: +5.31
- opponent PER vs. C’s: 21.7
- net defensive plus/minus: +5.3
- eFG% allowed: 50.7%

That’s terrible.

I would imagine it’s all speculation at this point. Just have to wait and see the details of the contract once those are released.

People need to realize that the player trade exception is money.

.. money that will tack on, given the Orlando Magic are going to be in the luxury tax. I doubt Otis goes out there and uses the whole sha’bang unless he gets creative with a trade, so keep that in mind.

I disagree. Mostly everybody understands what the TE is, we just don't care how it impacts the payroll

It’s not our money, and the trade exception is a nice tool at the Magic’s disposal to greatly improve the team (payroll be damned). That is all we care about and that is why we want it used.

NICE :D Welcome BASS!

He’s going to give a tough look at 4/5 with Dwight, instead of a Lewis-Anderson who have the same style, and if Bass and Dwight mesh well down low, esp. wit Bass’ midrange game, it could be the start of the Magic’s bad boys duo.

ratliff

erivera, i agree with you about him. his nums are declining and he looked really bad against us in the playoffs this year. my guess is that if we bring him in it’s only to play a few mins a game. i think bass would get some run at the 4 and would also get some backup minutes at the 5, and ratliff would average about 7 minutes a night as the 2nd/3rd string center. when bass plays the 5, look for anderson at the 4 since he is a much better rebounder than lewis.

by pinthatd12 on Jul 10, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

kleiza/delfino

derekk — please explain your thinking on kleiza a little more. he seems to me like sort of a wild, shoot-first, no defense, no fundamentals type guy. he can score in bunches, but doesn’t seem to do much else. not sure that’s a great fit on a team with a bunch of offensive options. do you have a different take on him? i’d love to get a delfino, who is a smart, balanced, talented all-around player.

by pinthatd12 on Jul 10, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hes not too quick on D, but hes atough, heavy SF who can defend average, if Magic let him body up more b/c of the Blocking Beast Dwight is behind him, Kleiza could try defending very hard, esp. with Pietrus in that spot too. Hes a good 3pnt shooter, still young, and if he’s runned off the 3pnt line Hollinger says he is actually most accurate driving. He has great fundamentals, because many “Best Fits” opinions think he needs a more system-based offense like Magic’s than Denvers 1on1-ish style, which is where Kleiza found himself out of rotation. I see this guy as a starter level SF in this league, particularly with the right fit/team like Magic. GM Smith needs to sell him on that fact with the full biannual or the rest of the MLE, before getting Matt Barnes, the 2nd best free agent SF behind Kleiza in my mind.

by derekk on Jul 10, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can Ryan Anderson play SF?

If he can I don’t see what all the hallabalue is.

Jameer/Johnson
Carter/Redick
MP/Anderson
Lewis/Bass
Howard/??

I think the need for a backup to our best player is being severely overexaggerated. 8-9 players MAX are going to be getting minutes come playoff time. I think Ratliff would be an excellent addition for a guy who just needs to play 10 mpg.

This team is going to be so fun to watch

…it’s like we got a brand new team!

haha

Some people will point this out to be a bad thing—I disagree. We have more talent than last year, the issue is coordinating a system around the parts we have. And honestly, Stan pulled the current one after tinkering around, what makes you think he can’t adjust (or fully change) into another one.

Just have faith in Stan, if nothing else. Question Otis, whatever, blah, I don’t care. But Stan has RARELY led this team astray.

how about fillers?

barnes and kleiza is good although i don’t know if kleiza will be good for small amt.
richard hendrix and russell robinson are impressive
looking into the vegas roster we could find other guys
Josh Heytvelt F/C 6-11 260 an athlete
Ian Mahinmi C 6-11 250 though i think Spurs won’t let him go
Pat Calathes G/F 6-10210 he can bring the ball, maybe SVG can bring out the best in him like he did with Hedo
John Bryant C 6-11 275
David Padgett C 6-11 230 tough guy back with pitino
Jeff Pendergraph F/C 6-10 versatile guy could learn the ropes with coaching staff
Rashaad Singleton C 7-0 270
Luke Nevill C 7-2 265
Brian Cusworth C 7-0 255
Courtney Sims C 6-11 245
Earl Barron C 7-0 268 this guy is soft though
Rob Kurz F 6-9 232 a competitor plus he can shoot from 18 and far away
Garret Siler C 6-11 305 played well in portsmonth
Longar Longar C 6-11 234 can play though inconsistent
Aron Baynes C 6-11 270 not much moves
Marcus Cousin C 6-11 250
Trent Plaisted F 6-11 245
Luke Zeller C 6-11 240 a pick and pop capable guy*
Nick Lewis F/C 6-11 240
Julius Hodge F/G 6-7 210 have been playing PG outside the country
Brandon Costner F 6-9 230 can play

maybe we can also sign hendrix, pat calathes, and russel robinson to fill out the lineup
