Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Here’s how badly the Boston Celtics believe Rasheed Wallace can be the difference in winning an 18th NBA championship next season: Coach Doc Rivers and the Big Three were planning a recruiting trip to woo him, possibly as early as Wednesday afternoon, league sources said.

The Celtics are targeting Wallace with the midlevel exception and sources say the team – which could be willing to pay a steep luxury tax – is also pursuing Phoenix’s Grant Hill.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Boston Celtics are making a hard push for Rasheed Wallace in free agency, a player who has been confirmed to be a target of the Orlando Magic. It'll be curious to see if/when general manager Otis Smith responds and ups the ante in recruiting 'Sheed.

Rumor has it that the C's might not keep Leon Powe. Would we like him?

Could we afford him? No Battie, no Gortat. I honestly prefer Powe over Sheed.

Well, all indications point to Powe not coming back to Boston.

If so, maybe that could be a target for Otis if things don’t work out with Wallace.

He may not be back until the All-Star break.

Yeah, I'm wondering if he will even be the same player he once was

ACL surgery is pretty serious.

I don't see why not. He's recovered from ACL surgery before.

So one way of looking at it is that it is very possible that he could be the player that he once was

Another way would be realizing that he is a player that has a tendency to tear his ACL and be out of commission for months at a time.

That's another way of looking at it, yes. A valid point, for sure.

We did this with GHill

signing a player who is already hurt, just doesn’t make sense to me.. Unless we get him at a bargain basement price, it isn’t worth it.

Sheed and Hill might work on the Magic.

Sheed doesn’t seem like a great fit in Boston… Would he start in front of Perkins?

He'd come off the bench, presumably.

No way he starts in front of Garnett or Perkins.

That's money for you...

Can’t do much, Magic aren’t going to go knee deep in the luxury like Boston, Cleveland and it’s perfectly understandable. If FAs don’t respect Orlando as a destination, then we’ll just be entering the season with an even better starting 5 than last season, but an even weaker bench, and this time the bench may not surprise and play very good. That rests on JJ and Anderson the young depth spots to improve upon themselves greatly, and I think they will.

Sheed move is scary

but, if Garnett isn’t healthy we still beat them. Ray and Paul should be a step slower also.

I agree

A motivated Sheed is an All-Star caliber talent.

So let me get this straight:

The Boston Celtics wont offer a contract to Leon Powe, a young player who the past 2 seasons (pre-ACL injury) was actually considered by Boston fans as one of their best (some would say THE best) low post players….

…but they wanna offer a contract to an aging player who has never really been motivated to live up to his potential, loves to sit out at the perimeter and rarely plays in the low post now?.

Real smart Boston….real smart.

absolutely dumb moves

I dont understand Boston going so deep into lux over a player in positions they are set it. They have Perks, Powe, KG, Big Baby…. but its their money..

Detroit has come to agreements with Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva

If Detroit was a thorn in our side before, it’s about to get uglier.

by pjlawrence81 on Jul 1, 2009 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

No, it won't.

Neither of those players will be issues for the Magic.

The players they had were issues for the Magic.

Certainly they won’t make up for the loss of Billups and potential loss of Sheed. But they still have Prince, Rip, & McDyess (notorious problem children for Orlando) and they’ve added extra offense. All they need now is a coach who can run them effectively. I applaud your confidence, E, but I’m freakin’ worried, man! Make me a believer.

by pjlawrence81 on Jul 1, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Uhh .. the only player that will probably stick around for the long-term is Prince.

McDyess is a free agent and it’s doubtful he goes back to Detroit.

Dice wants to win a ring .. he won’t be able to do that with the Pistons. Who knows how long Rip will be around? The Magic are completely superior to the Pistons .. people need to stop worrying about them. Detroit isn’t the same anymore, no disrespect intended to ’em. Not with that current team.

If we are superior, let's start playing like it.

They still have our number. Even when they began falling apart this past season, they still owned us. But if McDyess is leaving, how realistic would it be to snatch him up for a season or two? I really, really don’t want Rasheed Wallace on this team.

by pjlawrence81 on Jul 1, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

True, Detroit still has Orlando's number .. for now, at least.

Expect McDyess to be a target for Otis Smith, in case Wallace doesn’t sign.
