How many multi-position players can we sign?
After looking over who we have and who we're talking to, I was struck by how many tweeners we have - the players who move 'tween one position and another. Just on our current roster, we have Vince Carter (SG/SF, on rare occasion PG), Mickael Pietrus (SG/SF), and Rashard Lewis (SF/PF). One could also be generous and list Dwight at PF/C, given his original position with the team, and AJ has played SG in the past. We're also reportedly talking with Rasheed Wallace (PF/C), and there's a slim possibility we'll have Fran come over from Spain (PF/C). That would give us a half dozen players that can theoretically play multiple positions. Now, I'll admit to not paying attention to other teams as much, but doesn't this seem like a really high number of multi-position players?

It's better to have multi-positional players.
The Orlando Magic’s ability to move interchangeable parts around is what makes the team special.

Agreed
I love these multi-positional guys. They really bring a different edge to the team and can bother other players at those positions. Take Shard for example:
Big for the SF slot, so creates matchup problems on both ends. Quick for the PF slot, which creates issues for his man off the dribble.

It is a safe bet Golden State would have us beat

Golden State currently has 7 that I'm aware of.
Azubuike, Biedrins, Jackson, Maggette, Morrow, Turiaf, and Wright. Three of the seven are PF/C (Biedrins, Turiaf, Wright). All the others are SG/SF, and both Azubuike and Morrow are undersized for the SF position, at 6’5". If Jermareo Davidson re-signs with GS, he’ll be their fourth PF/C combo player.

Its the evolution of the game
more players are coming in with a higher skill set that the players themselves couldn’t tell you what position they are. nowadays, the only position that is a designated position is the point guard. even so, it was being challenged by players like Magic Johnson and Shawn Livingston (before his injury). for most players, it is actually a downside if they can’t fill more than 1 position
Yeah, versatility is a must.
