Keeping the 1 in, 4 out lineup. SF's

Dwight in the middle, and the rest outside making plays like pick and rolls, spotting in a corner or cutting, passing, and shooting. This is the Magic's general way of doing it on offense, and it worked so well a 23 yr old center lead the Magic to the Finals with that lineup system. As it stands, the rotations:

Nelson/AJ OK, VC/JJ OK, MP/ ??, Lewis, Anderson, Dwight/ ??.

We are missing a backup big, particularly to backup Dwight, but thats a 10-15 min. job, no big deal so spend very, very little on. SVG has alrdy talked about Ryan Anderson and how bringing him in behind Rashard doesn't change the offense at all, when last season brining in Battie or Gortat changed the offense. I don't know how serious SVG was about Ryan backing Rashard up, as GM's/Coaches love to gush about incoming players and what they will bring but then they dont play at all or as effective as expected. However, PER, stats, and Anderson observers could agree with SVG because Anderson has performed good in his first season and backing up Lewis is not only realistic, but absolutely preferred. This is a rookie who arguably had as good a regular season as C. Lee.

That leaves a SG/SF Magic should be taking a look out. They could even be lured with starter minutes and a full MLE, because Mickael Pietrus, a FA SG/SF pickup by GM Smith last summer that performed very well in the Magic's Finals run. has thrived starting and coming off the bench and could take the majority minutes towards the end of games anyways. As well as playing a backup to the 2 spot, the minutes are plentiful for Mickael Pietrus. I have not been looking at many SF's who would fit into Magic's system. But I can start off a few names who should fit in great.

Linas Kleiza- Rumored to be expecting only the MLE, maybe can be lured to less of it if he comes to the Magic. A 24 yr old SF who is a streaky 3pnt shooter at 34% but will likely improve. He is a fair defender too who would get to body into perimeter players for better defense knowing Dwight is behind him. His best skill is high IQ for passing and understanding intricate systems like Orlando's, as well as a strong driving game where he can even take contact and still finish. A great ability to know he can hit 3's, but slash to the rim vey well if need be, or pass around if need be. Denver would like to retain him, but he doesnt fit in with the one on one and loose offense system, the Nuggets are at the tax level without resigning Dahntay Jones or Birdman and as such may not be willing to match near MLE amounts.

Grant Hill- Has expressed desire for only two teams, Pho and Orl. Knows the Magic players, a locker room plus. Was healthy last season, and played at a great level of play. He can still do alittle of everything well, and is obviously a great team player. He would probably take the vet' minimum too. He might be nice to start too, as he likes to get into game rhythmn by starting and his high IQ would potentally mesh easier with the starting lineup than MP's. Altho, MP would still garner most of the minutes as the game wore on, or just start himself instead as he is the best defender now.

Ron Artest- Has expressed desire to stay with Houston, even with Yao's questionable future. But if he changes his mind, he'd be a great fit with the MLE for him and a ring later on. Defensive stopper, and offensively versatile, with a tough attitude that would hopefully rub on the Magic. Ron is mostly a pipe dream here though.

Any thoughts on pursuing a SF instead of a PF to help maintain the Magic's unique lineup? Any specific SF's who need to be of interest to the Magic? Or is a shooting styled, offensively versatile PF who "shouldn't" intefere much with Dwight's offensive spacing still the best option?

Good post. Well written.

Thing is, Otis isn’t intending on spending the full MLE. He’s already stated that he will most likely split the MLE so that he can sign several players .. and given where the roster stands for the Orlando Magic right now, that line of thinking makes the most sense. It’s better to sign a few solid players than it is to sign one good player.

Hill is a possibility, given that he’s a veteran that could be signed for the cheap. I doubt Smith will give a serious look to either Artest or Kleiza, given their price tag. Expect him to go after a big man, first and foremost.

Thanks, you make some good points.

I just wanted to introduce another train of thought. Plus the Magic dont have much to spend and might not be able to get Sheed, Bass.

Bruce Bowen- Has interest in playing for Orlando, and probably vet’s minimum. Still a great defender and 3pnt shooter. Subbing behind MP would not change the dynamics of the spot much, because they are similiar, only MP is getting into his prime and Bowen leaving it, and that MP has a more versatile offense with good drives/slashing and mid range shooting.

Bowen is washed up sadly

imo, Magic should take a serious look at Linas Kleiza. He seems to have good IQ for passing and playing in a intricate system like Magic’s, but can hit 3’s and drive/slash great. He could be a potent defender with his strength knowing Dwight is the block master.

Nice post.

I think big man backup is more important than you think-D12 is really foul-prone,and we mustn’t forget game 6 vs Philly-if we had someone worse than Marcin-no luck there.
That pulls another issue-backup SG/SF can’t be lured with a full MLE.

:/

Sounds bad but its just depth for one spot. Vince Carter is going to help the Magic be even better and can be starting the SG or even SF spot. Im still so hyped about getting Vinsanity, Magic will be the champions this year.

Ron Artest Update

“Bauman, Artest’s agent, told The Press-Enterprise Tuesday afternoon that the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic were three teams he expected to join Houston in pursuit of Artest.”

Quite frankly, this is one of those absolutely versatile and defensively tough and hard-nosed SF’s I have always thought would be even a better a replacement than Turk, and that list of better replacements is very, very small. I’m holding onto some hope there, the Magic need to break the bank here, full MLE, S/T, whatever, this is a FA that is an exception to splitting the MLE up.
Do it Magic!

That's what his agent expects. I think it's key to point that out, not to confuse anyone.

Man

I don’t see the Lakers going after him. I like Artest, he would be nice, but I think he still has value, I am not sure Orlando could afford to sign him, and still fill out the roster.

Ron Artest Update II

The Rockets star forward, an unrestricted free agent, will strongly consider a team’s chances of winning an NBA championship when deciding where he’ll bring his skills next season, his agent says. Exected to talk to Kobe and LeBron, especially if Ariza is lost in FA market. LeBron and Ron met in LA earlier for unknown reasons. A LBJ-Artest duo would be devastatingly effective.
Yet to be known is if Magic or Dwight Howard, their leading figure in a strong chance to win the title next season, will be attempting to recruit Artest as well.
I kind of see this as getting leverage, and I think Artest would like to get a lot more money than play for cheap. Charlie V gushes about playing for the Cavs in Twitter alot, and the Cavs did indeed try to sign him, but Pistons offered more money. Money talks best.

Ron Ron at the two guard?

That would be an…interesting…move.

by eltharion_doa on Jul 2, 2009 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well he would start at SF I think, he defends better than Carter and Magic would deftly give him alot of minutes.

by derekk on Jul 2, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He would start at SF, theoretically.

.. if Anderson Varejao doesn’t come back, LeBron can play the 4 easily.

.. or the Cavaliers can opt to slide Delonte West to the bench (which would be a good idea).

Then start Artest at the 2, James at the 3, etc.

I could see Ron and LBJ swapping between the 2 and the 3 on defense

Whoever the tougher defensive matchup is would be Artest’s, with LBJ covering the easier guy to conserve energy for offense. I could also see either of E’s alternatives working also.

I dont think its equal, Magic are still better IMO. But I would certainly like to see both teams about 25 games into the reg. season first, and atleast 1 game against each other first. Until Cavs break the trend of losing to Magic, or even defeat the Magic in a series, I wont think they are better tbh. Celtics I can throw up in the air because of KG and Nelson, and KG being slightly bigger for his team than Nelson.

Possibility more than a probability

His handles and defense are much better than Hedos … and his hair would look sick with a magic logo etched into it. Artest also brings the factor of intimidation which is something I think the Magic lacked throughout the season and playoffs (even though they proved you don’t need to be intimidating to reach the finals). Artest>Hedo, imo and I’m a homer.

2 things about this.

1. ‘Sheed supposed to be the hothead? No. This is why I think people need to chill out about him being a mess. The guy yells, and complains, but come onnnn, I would love for Ball Don’t Lie himself to wear a Magic uniform. haha

2. Anyone notice that since this brawl that Bird has been stockpiling white players? This years draft (Hansborough at 13) was the last link a lot of people say to this thought. I’m not sayin’ but I’m just sayin’.

Yeah, Bird's .. personnel choice has been odd.

Update

John Hollinger has a great piece on Underrated Players to be had right now for Cheap. Its an Insider piece, tho I have some names for SF, PF/C fits that sound very nice and are cheap.

PF/C’s
Hakim Warrick, I used to love this guy earlier but theres not much D! However, Hollinger says he can flat-out score. Perhaps he makes it up with the offense, and always keeps a offensive C threat on floor for Magic.
Ike Diogu, one I like, is basically under the same description as Hakim.
Drew Gooden, Still only 27 and numbers project well, a solid all around player, and an absolute steal for the reserve big man role and how cheap he could be.
Rasho Nesterovic, 33, C, good defender and passer still. Would be a good backup.
Channing Frye, can shoot good and play center/PF, not much of a defender but Hollinger says he projects better numbers at backup C than PF anyways. And is 26 and a locker room plus.

SG’s/SF’s
Marvin Williams- Good defender and alot of potential still. But offers likely to be matched by ATL.

Jamario Moon- “It’s not clear if the Heat are willing to cut into their cap space by re-signing Moon, and if not, it’s a good opportunity for another team to get a quality defender on the cheap. Moon can be frustrating offensively because of his tendency to take quick 3s, but he’s not chopped liver out there (35.5 percent) and he doesn’t turn the ball over. Additionally, he’s one of the best rebounding 3-guards in the league and is long enough to play the 4 in small-ball arrangements. Though he’s 29, Moon has been in the NBA for only two seasons, so he may still have some improvement left in him. Teams looking to split their midlevel exception among multiple players and needing a quality wing should have their eye out for him.”

Rodney Carney- “A rotation player who can likely be had at a bargain price since the Wolves didn’t pick up the final year of his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent. Carney offers two things nearly every team is looking for: an athletic wing who can defend and a decent 3-point shooter. He made 35 percent from distance last season while taking more than half his shots from out there. Carney doesn’t have great offensive instincts, so unless he’s throwing down a highlight-reel jam he’s pretty much a catch-and-shoot guy. But he’s a solid role player and, at 25, still has a chance to get better.”

His favorite D-Leaguer, Othyus Jeffers, only 24, a great defender, 3rd in PER of NBDL, better than a proven failing veteran.

Your logic is sound

All this bluster about getting a starting big is coming from the crowd that doesn’t like Lewis at the 4. Stan is not part of that crowd.

Rudy Fernandez?

If Portland sign Hedo, they’re going to have about five small forward/combo guards on the roster, which is at least one too many. Fernandez is supposedly frustrated in Portland, doesn’t like his role and wants to leave. Now, he’d prefer to go back to Europe but that’s unlikely, so could we scheme an offer for him?

He can shoot the three (40% last season), and handles the ball well, and allegedly wants more responsibility for playmaking – perfect, if he can do it, for us.

And he’s only owed $1.165m next season.

Is there any way we can make a play for him? And, would he fit?

by eltharion_doa on Jul 2, 2009 10:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well , i like your thinking :)

I think Rudy has alot offensive versatilty, he’d be a poor man’s Turk in many ways. I don’t really see him leaving tho. Blazers could S/T him for Hedo but the numbers are not a fit and Im not sure Blazers would do it.

Rudy would fit beautifully .. but I don't see any type of deal that could work.

How about Travis Outlaw, Josh Childress as more thoughts.

Do we really need big men?

Dwight Howard needs his space for offense, he’s the first option always and has so much potential still! Magic can kill teams with incredible wing players i.e. Nelson, Carter, Lewis, MP, JJ they dont need a big guy. They need SF depth for MPietrus not be alone and possibly have a nice competition for starter SF, MP can take backup 2 AND 3 min.s like last season if necessary. Dwight is improving at tremendous rates, he doesn’t need help. He needs to improve his offense, and he will period guys.

by derekk on Jul 2, 2009 6:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, we need one

Dwight, good as he is, can’t last 48 minutes a game, for 82 games plus playoffs. Nobody can.

Need Players !!!

If we can get a REALLY good C and PF that would be great!!! As for filling the bench to meet the min. player amounts, “I” will take one of those positions for VERY CHEAP!! $250,000 to say $500,000!! We will not go so deep into the L-tax that way!! LOL!!

Otis, lets not wait until all the good players are gone!!

For a SF here are the guys I'd look at (for less than the MLE)

Linas Kleiza (RESTRICTED) – Young, rugged, a good finisher and a decent 3pt shooter. Hustles, won’t back down from anyone, and plays defense. Will probably command a large portion of the MLE, however, and with many teams vying for his services, the full MLE isn’t out of the question. A great fit for the Magic, but ultimately may be too expensive if they need to split the MLE to grab a backup C as well.

Walter Hermann (RESTRICTED) – A big 3pt shooter who didn’t get much time in DET, but still managed to shoot 38% from 3. “Old” at 30. Has huge hands.

Rodney Carney – Young scorer who can shoot. Athletic. Dropped in the draft and hasn’t reached his once lottery-status. Had spurts of offensive bursts in Minny but inconsistent.

Grant Hill – The first ideal pick for the Magic. Knows the team and the players. Still very skilled and talented. And likely comes cheap at age 37. But can he still defend? He doesn’t shoot 3’s which doesn’t exactly fit SVG’s system.

Matt Barnes – The second ideal pick for the Magic. Can do a bit of everything. Can shoot the 3, rebound, and pass. Not much of a scorer, however. Wiry, but long and plays harder than his weight. Likely comes cheap(er) as well.

Ime Udoka – A defender and a 3pt specialist. Short for the position at 6-5, but played it well with the Spurs. A professional through and through, and a good lockerroom presence. Probably comes cheap(er) considering his age (31).
