Dwight Howard
My boy Dwight is the best defensive center in the game period. Less can be said about his offense, but how can we really blame him? USA obligations past 4 summers or so, and a great Lakers defense that doubles and triples him ALL the time.. He is fast approaching more playoff foul outs than Tim Duncan and Shaquille O'neal who have played about 170 more playoff games each than Dwight, and most of these are total ticky-tack or inconsistent calling..
But Dwight is playing really good and mature through it all, he is not showing much frustration, or as much as from earlier series.
I think its time for Dwight to forget about the foul calls on him, and play his game, play to his strengths. He needs to play defense like he knows he's getting 22 rebounds and 5 blocks. He needs to run the floor faster, he is the fastest big on both teams period (and his teammates need to recognize and pass to that). And he needs to keep making clutch free throws, because he has already been making them in critical moments and overall.
He needs to play more all-out efforts because he is the most athletic big out there, while keeping conscious of fouling as best as possible. If he fouls out playing like this, I say he went all-out 'till he had nothing left in him, that he played with the most effort of any Magic player like a franchise center-piece could lead by example with, and if the refs dont call the stupid fouls, Dwight will be there the whole game with a make-up "Defensive Player of Finals" award afterwards.
On his offense, I don't know what Dwight can do here. He can stay patient and keep doing good pass-outs, or sometimes I see like he might have the baseline spin move or a face-up drive if he moves fast right away, then size up the situation and allow the doubles/triples come faster (altho sometimes they come just before Dwight even gets the ball... so dont know). I aso want to talk about how Dwight lowers the ball in his hands too much. You know exactly what Im talking about. Its a good 'ol patented Magic moment where we scream why did Dwight just repeat this TO and ranks right next to Turk's infamous "why no effing foul call while I TO the ball" layup?!?! (Altho to be fair, we havent seen that Turk drive much at all lately) Perhaps the Magic can employ more Dwight pick and rolls and hit Dwight rolling down from a top of key passer? When the wings bring it out near the corner, it becomes so obvious they will pass in to Dwight! Mix that up.
I think all Dwight needs to do is play his defensively best for the Magic to win, but what's some thoughts about Dwight or his struggling offense?

Turk doesn't drive as much
becasue teams know that’s what he does, so you see Lakers double him agressively in pick and roll situation so Turk can’t turn the corner and into the lane. What Magic does very well in these situation is have Turk pass to Rashard, who quickly rifles a pass down low to Howard, who usually gets into good position because his man is help doubling Turk. Of course, once Lakers sniffed out that pass they started guarding the passing lane closely and make that entry pass harder, usually with a guard who looks to pick off the pass or strip it from Howard if the pass is made. Rashard can still pass the ball to the corner guy that guard was guarding, who should be relatively open. The problem for the Magic tho, is that the open corner guy haven’t been able to knock down that 3.
Agreed, especially on the last one. I was wondering, could we somehow borrow Fisher? LOL
Yep,it all comes to making the shot, actually. We had some open looks through this series, but pretty much failed to bang them.
Dwight played great last night.
He made his FTs which is how they Lakers are playing him and failing by it. He seemed more involved in trapping Kobe or moving up more, than being alone in the middle. He caused the MP steal that helped sealed the game. Thats just the clutch things Dwight can do, instead of offense, we have seen countless big rebounds or Off rebounds, blocks, and now steals in the game’s biggest moments along with the surprising clutch FT shooting. I though overall he couldve gotten a few more rebounds tho and ran the floor faster, as well as the typical ball lowering handling TOs that are many times really fouls. So hopefully Dwight can keep playing like last game or better, because the Magic won.
Howard had an efficient game last night.

They just gotta get him the ball before the tripple arrives or on the move.
He did a fantastic job last night. He was the reason Kobe got out of rithym.

.. just need to continue to run PnR's with him.
Dwight is at his best when he’s moving around on offense.

Howard is a very effective but not very versatile scorer.
The thing is, he knows this. And he’s said as much himself — he needs to work on it. But last offseason, what he mostly worked on was defense. And we’ve all seen the results — and don’t get me wrong, Dwight wasn’t a great defender last year. But if you had asked me last year how much Dwight could improve as a defender in one summer, I would have said he only had one or two notches higher to go. But this Dwight is at least three notches higher: the kind of guy whose very presence on the court alters the whole team’s defense. The undisputed DPOY, and arguably the best defensive big man I’ve seen in my lifetime. Better than Mourning, better than Mutombo. Maybe not better than Hakeem (if only because of Hakeem’s knack for steals), but right up there. A man who has obviously done work, and seen it pay off.
Now, you can say Dwight should develop a more varied offensive game. (And he wouldn’t disagree, nor I’m sure would Stan). But knowing what Dwight’s defensive improvements have done for his game and for the team, can you fault him for making them the priority?
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Correction.
I said “and don’t get me wrong, Dwight wasn’t a great defender last year.” Meant to say “and don’t get me wrong, Dwight was a great defender last year.”
Or “I’m not saying Dwight wasn’t a great defender last year.”
I was trying to change it from the latter to the former, and it never quite got there.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Yea, I agree. Better first priority.
From the Olympics summer, and with his own determination and athleticism remember when he said he was going to lead the league in blocks and renounds at the beginning of this season? He backed it up kinda easily actually which is downright ridiculous so he defintely learned defense was his biggest asset. DPOY, league leader in boards, blocks, and countless altered offenses and shots is what Dwight has to show for his defense now. It’ll be exciting to see, since how he upped his defense so much, and already has a 20PPG offense, how much he can up his offense in the future. I think a few more face-up moves like the jump or bank shot with improved FTs and handling of the ball will cut the TO’s, improve the FTs and lessen the Hack-A-Dwights, and keep defenders guessing if he will shoot or drive facing up. As well as to keep working on that hook shot, because it certainly has been unstoppable in stretches.
Give Dwight another off-season or two.
.. to work on his offensive game. Then see.

Agree. He has all the tools to improve his O-game.
I think the free throw improvement is a good indicator.

As long as he puts in the work (which he's proven he can do), Howard will continue to grow as a player.

His blocks
After he blocks a shot, I wish he can try to keep the ball in play rather than knocking them out of bounds to the 9th row. The latter is good for highlights but the former can result in some extra Magic possessions.
As much as I admire Hedo, Michael Jordan of Turkey is either an insult to the GOAT or to Turkish Basketball.
This is a valid point.
.. though once in a while it’s good to blast the ball out-of-bounds for intimidation purposes.

What are the stats on that?
I remember seeing something to the effect that the percentage of Dwight’s blocks that led to the Magic recovering the ball was actually about average.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
I dont know, but the Magic wasted a beautiful stat line from him.
Dwight’s stat line: 16 points, 2 assists, 21 rebounds (6 offensive rebounds), and 9 effing blocks. There’s no reason not to expect that from Dwight every game defensively, he is a beast.
Wasted performance, indeed.
I was able to catch the majority of the game and Howard was a monster.

Yeah, everyone is going to point the missed free throws but what a job he did.
IMO. The game was lost in the 3rd. quarter when the wheels came off. This team is liked a well oiled machine and when something gums up the works the whole engine shuts down. It sometimes takes them a while to fire it up again and you hope by then it’s not too late.

Yeah, Ariza was money in the third quarter.
.. really helped spark the comeback for the Lakers.

Man, I was hating Otis for that because..
Because all he talks of last two seasons was Title this, Title that. We get Title this year blah blah, but then he trade a great player in Ariza to the team likely to be in the Finals against the Magic.. I dont think Ariza really fited the Magic bill, especially with CLees amazing rookie season and MPs bigtime emergence in the playoffs. But Otis has to be feeling alil upset over that. Atleast signing MP was a better move, and turning Brian Cook from LA into Rafer Alston too.
