I wonder what its like to be the rainmaker
I wonder what its like to know that I made the rain
Id store it in boxes with little yellow tags on everyone
And you can come and see them when im…done, when Im done

I wonder what its like to be a super hero
I wonder where Id go if I could fly around downtown
From some other planet, I get this funky high on yellow sun
Boy I bet my friends
will be…stunned, theyre stunned
(chorus)
Straight up, what did you hope to learn about here
If I were someone else, would this all fall apart
Strange, where were you, when we started this gig,
I wish the real world, would just stop hassling me

I wonder what its like to be the head honcho
I wonder what Id do if they all did just what I said
Id shout out an order, I think were out of this man get me some
Boy dont make me wanna change my…tone, my tone

Please dont change, please dont break
The only thing that seems to work at all is you
Please dont change, at all from me
To you, and you to me

Wow, you magic fans are the classiest basketball fans us Laker fans have run into this postseason. You are really educated basketball fans and i thank god we get to “argue” with you guys rather than Cavs and their cocky fans. See you guys in Orlando.

Terrible guard play tonight, terrible bench (wake up, Pietrus).

I think we can make this a competitive series, but the Magic aren’t winning anything this year.

He was in foul trouble the whole time.

Never really got a feel for the game. Our guards didn’t play a whole lot. For some reason JJ played down the stretch which was a mistake.

by Ariel112 on Jun 7, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Lakers were lucky

We deserved to lose this game. Considering it was a home game, and a great chance to put huge pressure on Orlando, and the Lakers gave us one of their typical lackluster efforts all around. The fact of the matter is, both teams played horribly, the Lakers just played better at times.

I wasn’t fooled by the Lakers huge win in Game 1, the Magic were just that bad, and the Lakers subpar game is why the rout was only 25 points and not 40 or 50. I fully expect the Magic to get a HUGE win in one of the next three games, but like most, I expect LA to take one of these games in Florida.

Impressions from the game

I was very, very impressed with Turk’s defense on Kobe. I was a skeptic, doubtful of his foot speed, but he played some tenacious defense. Great timing, not just with the block but also stripping Kobe in OT.

Both teams had better defensive schemes against the superstars. The Lakers defensive schemes on Dwight have been impressive, flustering him with help but generally still chasing most of the shooters down. They also send the double from an angle to cut off an easy kickout pass from Dwight. But the Magic also played much better D on Kobe. He’s going to get his, but they made him work tonight. Both players had a high # of TOs.

Nothing to do with this game, but Roger Federer is the GOAT. King!

Technically yes

I consider him that already. Heck, Sampras himself said Federer was the GOAT even without #14. But I get what you’re saying. Hopefully it is Wimbledon.

He did a terrific job of shutting down Hedo, I think... Definitely the best defender on the purple team...

Lamar Odom, on the other hand, not so much.

It was funny, there was one play in the 4th when it was Hedo with the ball, nothing, pick from Rashard, scraps off Trevor and leaves Odom with Hedo. Odom is slow to the react to the switch, too much space, two points…

Gotta get Lamar to be your man to hit a shot, it seems like.

Good production out of the front line, but Nelson + Lee + Skip + Pietrus = 12 pts.

That would seem to be one key.

Magic outplayed the Lakers in the first half (which isn’t saying much) but turnovers were decisive.

4th Q and OT both teams started to go to the rack with it. Lee missed a couple great looks, Lakers executed best down the stretch, and there ya have it…

That was a pretty good game, once the three quarters of suck were over…

Just my thoughts on this game

1 – I haven’t said this all post-season, but I’m saying it tonight. We really needed Jameer Nelson tonight. I said this before the playoffs started that the Nelson to Alston drop-off wouldn’t hurt us until we got deep into the playoffs. Well it really showed up tonight. No one to run the point in the fourth quarter because Alston is garbage and is something like 0-7 on three pointers where there is no one withing 5 feet of him. Turnovers and sloppy play killed us down the stretch, and since I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it for the first time tonight: if we had Jameer at 100%, we win this game.

2 – Bouncing off of that last point – I have no idea why SVG was not playing Lee, Pietrus, Hedo, Lewis, Dwight in the fourth. This is THE PERFECT opponent to play that against. The Lakers are incredibly long and Lee has struggled to slow down taller opponents. If you aren’t going to play Jameer in the 4th (which I understand b/c he’s not 100%) then why don’t you play Lee at the point. Go long to match the Lakers length and give Lee more than 7 freakin minutes in the first three and a half quarters!!! For the most part I’ve given SVG some slack but in my opinion not playing that lineup for 15-20 minutes tonight is inexcusable and a poor job coaching on his part.

3 – Both teams played much better defense tonight than they did in Game 1. I would find it hard to believe someone watched both games and didn’t reach that conclusion. The Lakers did a much better job of contesting shots and disrupting passing lanes (although part of it was poor decision making by Orlando). Orlando’s team D was a lot better, but Kobe just missed some shots that he made in Game 1. I say we keep single-teaming him, force him to take 18-20 footers and hope he misses enough.

This was a really tough loss to swallow. This game really could have gone either way. Turk hit a ridic shot to put us up two in regulation. We got a bad bounce where the deflection fell right into Gasol’s lap to tie it. SVG drew up a good play at the end, but Lee couldn’t finish. To me, the make or break play in OT was JJ missing that wide open three from up top when we were up 91-90. That goes back to Point 2 of why is he even in the game down the stretch, but that’s a shot Redick should make.

Tough loss tonight, but we are in no way done. It’s going to be incredibly difficult to take four out of five from LA, but I’m not throwing in the towel either.

Why was JJ playing so much, anyway? I couldn't figure that out....

I think it was over 28 minutes, something like that…

Foul trouble for Pietrus.

The ineffectiveness of Lee on offense or defense and the poor play from Jameer and Rafer.

Pietrus was in foul trouble the entire game.

Lee couldn’t guard Bryant. SVG decided to stick Redick on Fisher and put Hedo on Kobe, which worked. J.J. did a decent job of moving the ball around on offense and making things happen.

Shouldn't

But it’s a natural fan’s reaction. We (media, fans, as a whole) reward players for coming up big in clutch situations. It’s why a bucket in the 4th “matters more” than a bucket in the 1st, even though they’re both 2 points. So I guess if it’s accepted to reward a player for coming up big down the stretch, it’s a logical extension to magnify criticism of bad plays in key situations.

Where they weren't last year

I know a lot of people don’t agree, but as a Lakers fan, I really do see the difference that experience makes. Tonight’s Lamar Odom (bad back and all) would not show up last year. Pau Gasol coming up big would not happen last year. Experience matters for young players, because being battle tested and more comfortable in a system allows for better execution in close games.

There’s a ton of important factors, but I really do think experience is a significant one.

I think people forget how many steps this team has taken without a healthy Jameer

If you add a healthy Jameer, and an improved Dwight, that makes the Magic a without a doubt pre-season contender all year long. Nobody will be expecting anything less from them.

Hedo on Kobe was good. But why JJ on Fisher? It's not like Fisher is a threat to do anything out there... Either Nelson or Skip could handle him easily.

Reading between the lines of the LA press, it seems that the Lakers were thrilled Jameer came back for this series, despite his 28 & 27 point performances against them during the season...

It has very definitely taken Rafer out of his game.

Now SVG feels compelled to play the JJ card, which is only gonna make things worse.

Just another case of the national media being idiots

With this whole “controversy” I kept hearing Alston played “excellent” against the Cavs. Seriously???? He had one great game but the rest of the time he did what we saw the past two nights…missing a ton of wide open shots (although not as many as in this series). The biggest problem is, I don’t think Van Gundy knows what to do with this PG situation. What Jameer can currently bring to the table isn’t really much better than what you will get out of Alston. Personally, I want to see some AJ in Game 3.

26 mins for Alston
12 for Jameer
10 for Johnson

Especially if neither Alston of Nelson are making any contributions.

Van Gundy doesn't know what to do, because no one is playing well.

JJ= Most Hated on the Internets

Tough, tough loss for you guys. Too many TOs and Dwight wasn’t managing the pressure as well as he did the previous series. That Lee missed bunny at the end of regulation and that Hedo shot that went in and out in OT were crushing.

I would have thought JJ’s performance in the Celtics series would have cut him a little more slack with Orlando fans, but I’m amused by just how much hate he’s getting after this game. (Then again, I know it’s the story of his life) I’m guessing he won’t play much the rest of the series unless Pietrus gets into more foul trouble and Jameer isn’t recovering well — but the misconception among so many that all he’s good for is 3 pointers overlooks how well he moves the ball and how committed he is to playing defense (even if he’s not the best on ball defender out there).

But a part of me, as a Knick fan, hope he keeps getting hated and forces Otis to give him away to the Knicks. D’Antoni would gladly take him (cue lame jokes about D’Antoni not caring about D), not just because he’s a shooter, but because he works extremely hard, is an underrated passer and defender, and is committed to improving every part of his game. Can’t say that about guys like Nate Robinson.

Are you a Magic or Mavs fan, or both?

I ask this, because I had a random basketball thought the other day…Dirk is the ideal complement to play next to Dwight Howard. A better version of Lewis, but big and strong enough to defend 4’s without problem. The idea of Dirk on the Magic is truly frightening.

Kidd did an underrated job. But it depends on how far you want to go. I don’t think they can win a championship unless they scrap the spare parts and bring in some major new players. That said, with the economy and Mark Cuban, the Mavs might be able to add a big name player from a small market team. you never know.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

I hope so too.

.. I .. can’t imagine the Magic without Hedo Turkoglu. The thought makes me cold inside.

Both, with a dash of Blazers and Bulls thrown in :)

If Kidd goes, I will miss his undeniable leadership and court vision. However, he is a black hole on offense most nights and add Dampier’s lack of scoring to that, that’s just not enough points and it means more work for Dirk, Josh, and JET.

There is talk about the Mavs being interested in Washington’s (?) pick, but we’ll see. If Rubio somehow ended up in Dallas, I would die.

They'd need a 3rd team for that, probably

Don’t think anything short of Dirk would pull in a top 2 or 3 draft pick.

Lee would help you

but don’t expect good interior D from him. He’s on the trading block because he’s pretty bad at on-ball D, help D, any D. He’d look good next to someone like Dwight, but on Dallas I’d worry a little.

Would Knicks fans be happy to see him go?

I saw this game on League Pass last season…I guess the Knicks had won and Lee was doing the post-game courtside interview. He thanked the fans for sticking around when their season was going so horribly…not everyone would do that. He’s not the heart of the team?

I really like David

and he loves NY. He is a genuinely good guy and fan favorite, and he works very hard. And to be fair, he got exposed a lot on defense because the perimeter guys weren’t exactly stopping penetration. But over the course of the season, he just didn’t seem to improve defensively, even with basic stuff…hedges poorly, doesn’t watch the ball and his man, doesn’t use his hands well on defense, doesn’t block shots, doesn’t communicate particularly well regarding defense (a killer in a system like D’Antoni’s which relies so much on help and switches.

I think Knick fans would be unhappy if he were traded, but not crushed, especially if they could get a decent return. Fans are happiest when they’re winning.

That's a really good assessment

Really, it is all about winning…to me, David Lee was like the one bright spot in that really dismal season last year.

Hey, this is the place to be

just sorry that it couldn’t be under better circumstances. But that’s just like me to be rubbernecking when things are bad. I still have high hopes for you guys to bounce back at Amway.
