OK I Need to Reword Something: To any Laker fan who might be interested

Minor fanpost on a comment on Laker fans I shouldn't have made at all. No this isn't a Laker bashing post like the many posts that have been hitting this blog.

Yeah, so in the game thread, in which I try to be a cool head with no caps, no cussing, and all the other ingredients to be a classy poster, I made a bad comment towards the Lakers fans saying in short, I hate them. Let me evaluate why I made that comment. Simply enough the game was frustrating me. We got the crap beat out of us, I expected more, so there were many reasons to why I was upset. And so I go and post that comment. A few of the Laker guys responded well after I'd left the thread and I know they probably wouldn't go back to read anything I posted there, so I want to apologize here and hope they read this. I know Laker fans get crap for rooting for the Lakers even if they are nice, educated people which is the majority. It's only a game, but when a team wins a lot on a regular basis, year after year, and other teams just get squashed by the dominant team, you know that the bandwagon of haters will grow as fast as the bandwagon of supporters. It's just natural to either root for the big dog, or root against them, especially when your real team of choice is not playing in something as big as the Finals.

I know it's gotta be as hard to root for a big winning team because of the backlash fans of other teams give, and besides the Magic in more recent years, I've rooted for the opposite of Laker-esque teams. The Kansas City Royals and Chiefs? Obviously this man love a winner. Mizzou? Football has been great but should decline with the loss of it's senior class and Basketball was stellar after a major slump, but then there are Laker-esque teams like Oklahoma and Texas in football and Kansas in basketball to root against (especially Kansas). Orlando has obviously got tons better in the D12 Era, but are still seen as underdogs in many people's eyes (mine included) They have gone against the Celtics, a vastly successful program that recently won the Finals last year, Cleveland, toting the best regular season and the MVP, and now the Lakers, easily the greatest program in the NBA's history. And I don't hate the fans at all, certainly not because I think they're stupid or bandwagon jumpers. I just wish the teams I root for could be more dominant. I'd love to see one of my KC teams win 3 straight championships and get in the postseason every year for a decade (and win postseason games, KC Chiefs). I'd love to see Mizzou grow into a football team that contends for a BCS Bowl game every year, and have a basketball team that can A) get into it's first Final Four, and B) maybe become a team that can contend for the Final Four, or heck, the National Championship every year too. Orlando is growing int o what could be a dominating force in the East, but we'll just wait and see on that one (Oh, and I've grown up an Orlando fan because I watched the Shaq era in the younger days, and I became a huge Orlando fan in the process without a team in KC anymore).

Meanwhile in LA and California there are plenty of combos for the sports you have. Just looking at all the great programs:  the Lakers, the Dodgers, UCLA or USC or Cal, ect. A lot of winning teams, and in the process, it makes me feel a little depressed of what I root for and what some guys can root for. And that's basically why the Lakers are hated, although you probably already knew. No disrespect meant to the Laker fans a Silver Screen and Roll, it was just frustration from Game 1. Hopefully we can play better and win Game 2, or at least compete. Last night just left a bad taste in my mouth is all, and of course winning can cure that, but KC's in a poor shap with sports, the Magic and Mizzou are all I have right now, and the underdog nature makes a little more dislike of the big name teams.

So all in all, I never was meant to enjoy Laker-esque teams simply becaue I've grown up rooting for the more underdog type teams, especially as of late. And if you've read all of this, which I don't think even I would, just remember that if I had stayed at that game thread, it would have been boiled down to this: "I'm sorry, I overreacted, no harm meant and I know you guys get a ton of crap for rooting for a great team." And if you've read this whole thing, wow. You have a gift, you reader you :)

And also this isn't some tactic to save my hide by being the nice guy

not 100% at least :) I just felt like I had to apologize some way. It must suck for it to be the world against you if you’re a Lakers fan.

Nice post.

Your point about it being hard to root for Yankees/Cowboys/Lakers-type teams has great merit.

I have a theory about fans — that they are more or less the same all over the country. Some fans are really smart, some are dumb as rocks. Some are witty, some are clueless. Some know the game, some only know the name of the one big star. Some like to talk trash with other fans for fun, some get offended.

The so-called “big” teams have more of every kind of fan — so if you are looking for the sub-set of big-mouthed, clueless, nitwits, I can assure you a team like the Lakers probably leads the league. Same with the main team I support, the Portland Trailblazers, who have an internet presence far greater than their geographic popular support around the country would probably imply.

So if you’re looking for stupid and abrasive, you can find it there.

There are also smart fans and nice fans of the big teams out there, too.

It all depends what you’re looking for…

Part of the deal with the Lakers is that it’s such a huge city and lower bowl tickets are expensive and it’s a status thing for a certain trendy segment of the community to see and be seen there. The real fans are in the rafters. You can hear them but not see them, but they’re there. Still, it’s not a really loud building, no one would ever say that… Regardless, there are real blue-collar Lakers fans out there, same as any other team in the league…

Pickaxe and Roll had a nice piece about a visit to Staples during these playoffs, I’ll see if I can find it…

BEHIND ENEMY LINES

Anyway, no blood, no foul.

Good luck Sunday.

.... read "physical popular support"....

Trying to say that it’s a small market franchise in the upper left corner of the country with a disproportionately large internet presence = more of every kind of fan.

A very classy post!

This was so well-thought out and well-said. As a Laker fan, I thank you very much for all you said here. I hope your sports fanatacism rewards you with a championship in the very near future – just not this year :-)

Seriously, I think the Magic are going to be a great team for a long time to come and we are on the cusp of watching something very special take shape in Orlando. Keep your chin up, ratherfantastic. I have a feeling the D12 era will bring a Larry O’Brien trophy to Orlando in the next couple years.

It's the emotions talking.............

Although I appreciate your “mea culpa” RF, it’s not really neccessary.

Stepping away from the whole “Me as a Laker fan and the rest of the world is against us” ideal, everyone has to remember, it’s only sports. I’m pretty aware you don’t hate me. You don’t know me, I don’t know you. You hate that I’m a Laker fan. You don’t like my team. You don’t like what it represents. There’s nothing wrong with that. I think it’s easy for people to take sports issues far too personally. Because we as humans put so much interest and passion into something that we follow so intently like sports, it’s easy to take a statement against the thing we love to heart.

You don’t have anything to apologize for. You don’t like my team, for whatever reason. It’s your prerogative. Don’t sweat it.

Peace

Oh, it's neccessary for me :)

I’m all about being the nice guy. It’s a weakness of mine. I totally see what you mean, but for me this was neccessary.

Your a Royals & Chiefs fan??

Man, you just shot WAY up in my “Cool Fans of Opposing Teams” book.

I feel for you on the Chiefs front. I love them to death, and I’m glad to see some form of sanity finally coming back to the franchise. Let’s just hope that Hunt actually knows what he’s doing, because if his plan is to turn the Chiefs into some sort of money in his pocket organization, w/o being a championship contender year after year… he’s got another thing coming.

Overall, thanks for the retraction, not all fans of big teams are just bandwagoners or people who root for the big dog. For me, I grabbed on as a kid because I loved Magic. I didn’t fully understand the championships they had already won, so I was clueless on the “big dog” status. I cried as a kid when Magic retired due to HIV. I hated the Bulls for taking down my team in their last grasp. And I watched dutifully as a consistent fan during our “Vlade Divac” years.

But I also understand your position at times. There are many fans that make us look dumb also, the “Kobe is the greatest” fans, etc. But as a Chiefs fan, you also know that they have some of those too.

P.S. Next time we meet the Colts in the playoffs, we better win! I hate Indianapolis!!!!!

Excellent Post

I am a HUGE Lakers fan from the pre-Magic days when they were losing more than they were winning. I have read a lot blogs especially during the playoffs because I like to keep things in perspective. I must say, this is the first one I have responded to. Thank you for the apology, but you have right not to like the Lakers and root for your team. They are a good team and I wish them well. You are correct however that it is difficult sometimes rooting for a team that a lot of people hate just because they are an L A team. What is worst in my opinion are those who live here in L A and hate the Lakers or Kobe for no particular reason, just because it is the fashionable thing to do in some circles. They can’t give a coherent reason why, they just do. Also, there are many haters who forget as another blogger stated, us Laker fans have also suffered thru some tough seasons. It has not always been glitz and glory. We won 3 titles and then we suffered from 2004 until 2008 until the Lakers made back to the finals. And then we had our hearts torn out by Boston. Prior to the 3 titles, we endured several coach changes, in-fighting (who could forget Del Harris and Nick Van Excel?) and let’s not forget Kobe’s famous airballs against Utah in the Western Conference Finals. That was painful to watch. So true Laker fans have suffered too, but somehow that seems to get lost in all of the fan fare. The bottom line is most teams go thru ups and downs, the Lakers aren’t any different, our team is just in the lime light for everyone to see. The real Laker fans have stuck by this team thru good and bad seasons and now they have made it back with a chance to bring L A another title and I am proud of them win or lose. I want them to win for Kobe and Phil Jackson. I am so sick of the Kobe haters who truly cannot appreciate how hard he has worked and what he brings to this game. It is not about who is better, those who are true basketball afficianodos can appreciate all of the great players and how hard they work to stay at the top of their game. We are witnessing something special in sports during our lifetime, we should appreciate it because when it is over, it may be a long time before L A has another player as special as Kobe.
