Source: Nelson to be active for Magic
From ESPN.com
LOS ANGELES -- Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson will be activated Thursday for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers, but no decision has been made yet on playing time, an NBA source told ESPN's Rachel Nichols.
During the past few days, Magic general manager Otis Smith has told Nichols that the Magic have never been considering whether Nelson would be in the starting lineup. The question is how many minutes Nelson would get coming off the bench.
The All-Star point guard participated in a full team practice Tuesday for the first time since tearing the labrum in his right shoulder Feb. 2. Players said Nelson looked "terrific" during the practice.
"I expect to see him out there at some point in the series," backup point guard Anthony Johnson said earlier this week.
Nelson had what was then called season-ending surgery Feb. 19. His rehabilitation was supposed to take at least another two months.
"I'm not saying I'm any tougher or stronger than anybody, but I've been known to do some amazing things sometimes," Nelson said Tuesday, as he again lobbied for playing time.
Lots of conflicting info coming out of LA. Interesting....

"Shoot first, ask questions last" Rafer Alston
Per Schmitz blog, it seems to just be a respect thing, letting him dress...
Magic point guard Jameer Nelson isn’t expected to play in Game 1 of the NBA Finals tonight against the Lakers, although the plan is to activate and have him dress out, sources tell the Sentinel. The chances of him playing in the series is slim.
Nelson has been trying to come back sinice Feb. 19 shoulder surgery.
He has been ahead of schedule in his rehab and has been feverishly trying to persuade the team that he is ready, participating in his first practice Tuesday in Orlando and in Wednesday’s workout in L.A.
It looked like he had a chance to play but apparently the club deemed the risk too great for the all-star who hasn’t played since injuring his right shoulder Feb. 3 in Orlando against the Dallas Mavericks.

He's not playing, end of story.
Activating him is nothing crazy.

Yep
Its just a paper move, “activating” so they could do it later in the series if they want. Nelson was so good in the practices I read tho.. so Im still holding a small ray of hope for tonights game (concerning Nelson). Either way, Magic win!
Orlando is going to do what's best for Nelson.
.. even if Jameer wants to play.

Is there any concern for injuring again or...
is it just a matter of how much he can help the Magic?
I thought he was cleared by the doctors, so shouldn’t that mean, at least from a health standpoint, that he’s 100% ready to play? And I don’t mean that he’s ready to play at 100% of his game, I just mean that he’s healthy and there’s no additional risk of him getting injured.
The Magic don't want to risk his future
The doctors have indicated that the chance he gets re-injured are small. However, as indicated by several reports, Nelson still has two months left of actual recovery time. It’s just not worth it for Orlando to play him and risk it with Jameer, especially since the team can win without him.

Got it
Was unsure of his health status. But ya, if resting him for a couple more months would lower the chances of re-injuring. I say just keep him out. My original thought was that he recovered so fast that playing him now would be no different them playing him later.
Well, bodies respond to injuries differently. That's basic human biology.
I wouldn’t doubt that Jameer has recovered almost fully, but it’s still not worth the risk.

Yeah, all I was saying was, don't be so affirmative in these toss-up situations
it’s possible that everyone can be wrong once in a while.

I don't mind being wrong.
I’m more than happy to admit it. I hear what you’re saying, though. I sometimes get into a bad habit of speaking in absolutes. I’ll try to be more careful about that.

OS updates again. Nelson to play!
Im excited, I think this is necessary and huge for the Magic. SVG had the final say so and disclosed his decision just recently that Nelson will indeed play. He will eat AJ’s minutes behind starter Rafer Alston. SVG is a great coach. He is using Jameer to mess up Lakers’ defense and have a full 4 good shooters out instead of Alston (no disrespect tho, hello.. we would not be here without Alston). SVG will then understand the special circumstances and lower/higher Nelsons’ minutes as his play dictates.
I think Nelson will be O.K. tonight, and hopefully shoot good ’s like last playoffs. This is not a 100 Nelson, but hopefully his play catches up as fast as he recovers and further reason to add to why the Magic should win.
Haha
I love how NBA TV gets it tentatively right like 2 weeks before Orlando Sentinel, and even ESPN the premier Magic haters got it tentatively right today a few hours before OS.
Nelson
To be fair, Bianchi from OS had a blog piece wanting Nelson to play which I wholeheartedly agree with.
He played OK which is what I was expecting
Id be ready to arleady give him the starting job if he didnt tail off as the game went on. Id prolly still recommend Alston starting, and Nelson is the backup. And to put it back to normal substitution patterns. I suspect SVG wanted to see Nelson in an extended look. Now he will decide who to start and play the 30+ mins as starter, and the 20-ish as backup.
I would complain alittle, because I didnt like having an equal split of mins/quarters for PGs like that b.c. it really does take Alston out of flow and he is the best defender of the Magic PGs, but that whole game was lost on the fact the Magic were outrebounded, and did not play defense in the paint as Lakers got more than half of their points from the paint. Howard and Lewis laid the mother of all eggs, but these are the two most important players, stick with the gameplan and be more aggresive, so the Lakers reel back and have to adjust.
Rafer PG, Nelson SG?
Wonder if SVG ever thought about it? Playing Alston at PG and Nelson at SG, Pietrus guards Kobe, and the two PGs can hopefully create more, and force the pick and rolls more effectively for themselves and Turk.
Terrible idea against the Lakers, who are a team with tremendous length at many positions.
If the Magic paired the two of them together, the team would get slaughtered because of the lack of size.

Nelson to execute more pick and roll?
I cant exactly remember which offensive plays the Magic employed successfully against the Lakers in the regular season since it was so long ago. But, I think Nelson’s pick and roll play was a majority offensive play for the games. It should be re-utilized. Fish is too old, Kobe might but would waste alot of energy, and Ariza leaving Turk leaves Turk a smaller defender to further mismatch. Nelson, Turk pick and rolls, with plenty of passes in transistion to Dwight or Dwight in a roll. When they stop doubling or tripling Dwight, let Dwight run the play for a bucket or pass out.
Orlando did a great job of dribbling penetrating and running the pick & roll against the Lakers ..
.. with Nelson running the show. Jameer wreaked havoc into the lane because Los Angeles couldn’t key on him defensively .. he would either nail his jumpers or attack the basket for easy buckets.

Not good, taking players out of their game, Hedo is hurting with this move!!!! Better do something like go back to the original playoff offense!!
They need to keep starting Alston
He PG’ed the Magic here, he deserves the benefit of doubt ’til the end (and even then, itd be in retrospect, either outcome. he was a good PG thru all the spotty shooting, and hopefully is back next yr). Nelson should still back up, but SVG needs to tell Nelson its now or never with his play. Shoot, dribble penetrate for short jumpers only. I dont know really what he can do best or should do, but Id like to see Nelson shoot it confidently quite abit. Magic guards have it open all day. Its the only playoff defense every series against the Magic, Nelson has a tendency to get hotter as the game goes by just like Turkoglu exactly.
.. if the Magic keep starting Rafer, he's going to keep missing shots.
Orlando has no margin for error, at this point. Nelson and Johnson need to see the minutes.

Man, I thought about that so much too.. but not sure
Nelson and Johnson can shoot. Alston is not shooting well like he usually does in some stretches or is clearly a little out of funk with Nelson back. But I dont know about that for sure. all the magic guards just need to stay loose, positive, and confident thru the tough situations and crazy rotations.
Also I remember Nelson’s shooting form earlier in the season. Im no shooting expert, but in his jumpshots, esp. from 3-land, with good shooting stance, knees bended, he would jump for the shot and end up what looked like almost 3 feet ahead of where he brought the jumpshot up. It almost looked like too much, but that was the shot that was 50% and 45%!
Jameer just doesn't have the same lift on his shot right now.
.. still trying to get his knees back from under him.
