After losing to the Lakers and their big front line in the NBA Finals, the Magic are expected to make offers next week in free agency to both veteran Rasheed Wallace of Detroit and young Brandon Bass of Dallas, according to two NBA sources.
Tim Povtak of NBA FanHouse dishes on two players the Magic will target in free agency. Based on the discussion here in the last few weeks, I'd say most 3QC readers agree Orlando is on the right track.

Sheed seems done, you cant garuntee he will be the low post presence that he should be,
He may just camp out on the 3 point line.
Dont know much about Bass but from what I’ve seen, he seems more servicable.

Both are excellent fits for the Magic.

I, personally, am not comfortable with Rasheed Wallace.
That being said, Otis didn’t consult with me, and that’s probably ok.
I’m thrilled with how Otis Smith has performed as a GM, BTW. I think he’s made some great moves, and kept this franchise in a decidedly positive direction. I think it’s the moves he’s made that have allowed this team to blossom, and hope and excitement to return to this city. One of the best GMs in the league…
Sheed though… The guy has had such attitude issues… I’m comfortable with the Magic absorbing VC, and becoming better because of it. I can’t find a way to see that with Sheed. I believe that his style of play would mesh well with our team, and I believe that he’s probably the best big we could get… But I just don’t want him in Orlando. I’d as soon have Shaq. Seriously… That bad…
I’m perfectly comfortable with Bass. He’s young, and big enough. I’m uncertain what type of rotation would develope at the 4 spot (assuming Rashard moves to the 3) but no worries there. SVG can handle it.
In honor of the absentee Eddie, "For the last time Rashard will not move back to the 3.
We need spacing at the 1-4 and putting a traditional PF in the game will only make us a good team vs a great team."
How’d I do Eddie?
Life's too short. Be a fan. Magic, Cards and Rays! What a winning combo.
How many 'traditional' PF do you know that shoot a career 34% from 3PT range?
Trust me, spacing the floor will not be a problem with ‘Sheed. He’s exactly what we need on this team, a player that brings a toughness and grittiness every moment he’s in the game.

This
In E’s D,he’s absolutely right,Lewis at 4 brought us to finals and that’s what separates magic from other good teams.
I wouldn’t mind having Wallace,giving STG more possibilities,though.
Well, 'Sheed will not come off the bench, believe that.
If it comes down to signing ‘Sheed and him starting at the 4 and ’Shard at the 3, SVG will make the accommodation, let’s face it. If anyone doubts that, I’ve got a paypal address to wager with under the condition that ’Sheed does in fact sign with the Magic.

He may or may not start.
I don’t know. You’re right, though .. SVG will make the proper adjustments, either way.

HOLY FLIPPIN COW PEOPLE!!
I’m not one of those guys who’s convinced that Rashard is to small for the 4 spot, and that there would be a miraculous revolution if we moved him to the 3.
Are we going to start Air France though? Who’s going to back HIM up? If you bring in Sheed, Rashard moves to the starting 3, and Rasheed moves to the starting 4. He’s a better player than Pietrus. Those are the best 5 on the team. You start your best players.
There are spectacular players that have accepted a huge 6th man role on their teams over the last year, (Odom, Jason Terry, Kirilenko) but I’ll bet you Sheed’s not that guy. A bunch of you were concerned with Rafer’s whininess/attitude after the finals. I promise you that Sheed’s going to be no better, and potentially much worse.
Yeah,could be...
But think of it this way. We can discuss trades anyway we like here, the fact is that noone forseen this last trade,we talked about something completely different,so this is all for fun.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Otis again pull something unexpected out of his sleeve
Assuming the Magic get Bass, he'd backup Mickael Pietrus (assuming he starts).
.. Brandon would back up the 3 & 4 for Orlando. Rasheed would back up the 4 & 5 for Orlando.
If Wallace starts, then Pietrus is the sixth-man, and the same rotation applies for Bass.

Bass isn't a 3/4. He's a 4/5
This year, he had 11% of the Mavs’ PF minutes and 28% of their C minutes. Last year, it was 22% and 16%. No way he plays the 3.
You're right. Brain lapse, on my part.

You did okay, sir.
If Rasheed is in the game, it’s either to a.) back-up Dwight Howard or b.) back-up Rashard Lewis. Either way, you’ll see Wallace play the 5. I mean, Stan Van Gundy would be foaming at the mouth to have a guy like ’Sheed on the team, especially given how he demands spacing all the time on offense.
I doubt Rasheed Wallace starts .. he may, but I wouldn’t prefer it.

I agree...
the thought of ‘Sheed’ on our team makes my stomach turn.
"I have come that you may have life, and life to the max"
I think Rasheed would be a good soldier with the Magic.
.. he knows this will be his last chance at a title. I think his “attitude” issues won’t be a major problem.
As for Bass, he’d be an excellent fit with Orlando. He won’t start, but he’ll come off the bench and spot minutes at the 3 & 4. If the team gets both players, we’re looking at the favorites to win it all next season.
I'm the other guy at Third Quarter Collapse, with a Twitter account.

Is it financially possible to get both?
I was kinda under the impression it was one or the other. Getting both Bass and Wallace would be a dream come true though.
by Lee for three on Jun 29, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, it's possible.
From my understanding, the team is willing to roughly $5 million into the tax this season. That would mean Rasheed could sign for the veteran’s minimum (I don’t know what his asking price is, I’m just guessing) and Brandon could sign for .. maybe $3 million – $4 million. Remember, part of the veteran’s minimum is covered by the NBA so the Magic wouldn’t incur the entire contract.
That’s something to keep in mind.
I like to correct myself with the Bass can play the 3 comment .. that’s incorrect. Whoops.

He would be perfect
Fits exactly what we do on offense while also giving a very good post presence and tough defender and rebounder. And get this…
One of the few players who would allow Rashard to move to the 3.
One of the few, yes ..
.. because Rasheed can space the floor, as well. Stan Van Gundy would have a field day, offensively.

I can deal with Wallace -- Bass baffles me, though.
Listen. We’ve all had our issues with Wallace, but I think that the one thing you can definitely say about him is that he does the work. He’s a smart, focused competitor, and in the end, I trust him to do what it takes to succeed.
But as for Bass… I have 2 things to say. 1) No, and 2) why? I cannot for the life of me see why so much talk has been wasted on this paragon of mediocrity. He’s an average scorer, but a useless rebounder; he’s undersized for a PF; and while his range extends to the midrange jumper — i.e. the least efficient shot in basketball — he doesn’t shoot the 3.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
You're in the minority, then.
.. Bass is a perfect fit. Stats don’t lie.
Average scorer? His ORtg last season was 113, that’s above-average. Mediocrity? His PER was above 15 last season, that’s above-average. His TS% was above 57% last season, that’s above-average too.
Last time I checked, Charles Barkley was undersized for a PF and made up for it in different ways. I’m not comparing the two players, but the same premise applies to Brandon Bass. He makes up for it.
His adjusted and statistical plus/minus scores are low .. but that’s because he’s playing behind Dirk.
Again, Bass would be a perfect fit for the Orlando Magic. His pros far outweigh his cons.

I would love to have Sheed
I can’t believe some of you people. We’ve watched this guy tear us up over the last few years and you don’t want him? So he gets a lot of techs and he’s got some gray hairs, who cares. He’s Sheed, even in his old age he can bring a ton to this team.
One Freaken Second
i think from the bench now, but he would make sense at 4 starting too. But makes more sense he would backup dwight at 5 i think, and wold get alot of min.s with dwight b/c he is a good shooter.
He could get 25-30 mins a night doing both
10-15 in place of Dwight and the rest alongside him.
That would make our nine-man rotation:
Nelson, AJ, Vince, JJ, Lewis, Pietrus, Wallace, Anderson, Dwight. Howard will be the only guy who can’t shoot the three-ball. This team would be way more dangerous than last year’s.

Give me Sheed!
He can start at the 4, but he could also back up Dwight at the center’s spot. Bass is OK, but he doesn’t give us the back-up center we need. Pull the trigger Otis.
agree on all pts.
Sheed is the perfect piece. He can do it all and he will be motivated. Sheed will help us defend KG and pao. Bass still works, he is hard worker, tough defender, solid reboudner, and he can shoot the 10-12 footer.

Wallace would be the back-up center, in essence.
Bass would be a good player off the bench.

Some more thoughts
I love ’Sheed, he needs to be mature with the Team/SVG but GM Smith has been making great moves, and is very careful with chemistry, I completely trust him by now. ’Sheed has good defensive skills and rebounding still, and his all around offense is a perfect fit!
Bass, I really like, its like the Magic retooling C.Lee out for Ryan Anderson and Brandon Bass, other young potential players. But these give frontcourt depth instead which is a plus. They are both young, but both great shooters, Ryan the slightly better shooter, and Bass the slightly better defender. But neither is a great defender, so thats where ’Sheed or Dice makes more sense.
Also, can the Magic pursure Antonio McDyess! He would be such a perfect fit too.
Wallace is cool with Howard.
.. so chemistry wouldn’t be an issue. As for Bass, folks .. he’s 23. The same age as Courtney Lee.

it seems like this might be done with a Hedo S/T, but i cant say with any certainty, just that it could make sense looking like this. And that all this is very early rumors, so the sources can be faulty, and the direction Magic are taking are different i.e. cheaper players, resigning Hedo, etc.
I don't think we'll see a Hedo S/T
For the same reason we won’t see Hedo stay with the Magic. The Devoss family is willing to dip into the tax, not dive into it.
Hedo sign-and-trade isn't happening.
.. the Magic will let him walk.

i want sheed if it can happen
he plays with fire and knows what it takes to win it all. he’s the type of personality that would completely shed the notion that the magic are a soft team.
Nah' mean, nah'm sayin
Imagine a Howard/Wallace duo.
Intimidation, much?

Like the Sheed idea
But not sure about signing Bass. He’s a good player, but I think we need help at the 3 spot more than the 4 right now since we picked up Anderson.

Rasheed Idea
I really like the idea. He’ll be PF and Lewis will go back to his original SF. Lewis would logically play even better. Rasheed can rebound, post-up, spread the floor, and shoot the 3. Some peeps say he gets too many techs, but Howard has been on par, if not already passed Sheed for more techs in the past couple of seasons. Age shouldn’t be too much of a difference. People questioned Ray Allen’s and KG’s ages when they came to Boston…Guess they got shown up. As much as I love Turkoglu, I’m glad to see the Magic making moves to lessen the blow…Just think if the VC trade never occurred and Turkoglu still left?
Lewis wouldn't logically play better at the 3.
Some of his advantages offensively would be limited.

Lewis would have better post ups now, and he was BEASTLY doing it in that Game 6 of Phily. Made SVG think twice who is the dominant post player, but given the idea that Lewis would post up more, Sheed/Dice woud also like to play alittle post sometimes, its awful lot of crowding on Dwight. And when I saw what Dwight did in Game 6 against Cavs was even more BEASTLY. 1 in , 4 out, Dwight killing single and even double coverages at times, passing out better now on doubles and triple coverages. It was total beauty from a team basketball standpoint with all the 3 point shooters out on the perimeter (minus Skip!) , now that repeats with all the pick and rolls too, but with a Vince Carter on the perimeter and a higher post Sheed, prolly off the bench, who can shoot over players, shoot 3s, having tons of passing options.
The only thing I see letting Sheed start, is SVG saying that phrase he says alot, “You play the game around your personal”, – “and now that Dwight is developing even more dominantly, we will have Sheed starting and occupying the high post and perimeter as often as possible, because we believe it will not interfere much with Dwight’s space offensively, and as we obviously continue running the offense through Dwight. On the other end, the lineup will reap from even greater defense than last year’s.” And if Sheed is too old to play heavy min.s now, Bass or Anderson is getting good amt of mins behind the 4 plus the 10-15 behind Dwight.
I dont think its worth the offense still tho, Lewis won’t be able to shoot 3’s like its nothing anymore I suspect, and everything is somewhat more conventional which is a big change I dont like seeing for some reason, but we’ll see if we sign Sheed or not, and how SVG plans with him.
If push comes to shove, Orlando can play with Lewis at the 3 and Wallace at the 4.
My main concern is only Rashard battling small forwards instead of power forwards.

My only concern is confusing Rashard's and Rasheed's names
Magic haven’t even signed Wallace yet, and I keep doubletaking every time I read about Lewis defending small forwards. At first, I keep thinking people are talking about Rasheed.
Even though the Hippopotamus lacks a stinger for a tail, a truly wise man would rather be sat on by a bee. ~ Banacek
LOL .. yeah, things may get confusing.
What sucks is we can’t use their nicknames either. ’Sheed is too similar to ’Shard. May have to refer to each player by their last names exclusively to avoid confusion, like you said.

You're forgeting something... GORTAT!
The trade with NJ makes it probable that the Magic WILL be able to sign Gortat, who at 24 is one heck of a center/PF, with fast-growing credentials.
I LOVE to have Rasheed, or Bass to beef up our front line, but HOW exactly do they all fit with Gortat in the lineup. He IS Dwight’s replacement now and for the forseable future. The Magic won’t have him sitting for no 34-year-old declining newcomer.
If we get Gortat back, that's one thing.
But if you look at the lineup… you’ve got Dwight and Lewis at the 5 and 4. You’ve got Anderson backing up Lewis at the 4. Maybe Anderson will see some time at the 3? I don’t know him that well — don’t know if he has the speed to do that. But still, given that we already have a backup PF who needs court time to develop, and given that the Dwight-Gortat frontline met with mixed results at best, I just don’t see where Gortat gets much more than the 10-12 minutes that Dwight isn’t on the floor. And no matter where the money is, it makes no sense for Gortat to play for a team where he’s not going to get at least 25-30 minutes. He’s still young enough that he’s playing for the paycheck AFTER this one…
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Gortat is gone.
.. it’s highly unlikely he comes back, though the team may make an offer just to see what’s up.

I'm not convinced
He even wants to come back.
If he gets the mid-level and a starting role on another team, I just don’t see it being a good idea for him to reject that to play 15-20 minutes max a night here. Maybe if he was a vet, but he’s young.
