BREAKING: Vince Orlando-bound?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4287197

The New Jersey Nets are in serious talks with the Magic about a deal that will send Vince Carter to Orlando for Rafer Alston, Tony Battie and Courtney Lee, two league sources told ESPN.com.

The talks have reached a point that a deal could be done by the end of the day Thursday, according to sources.

The trade would give the Magic even more star power on their quest to win an NBA championship. The addition of Carter to a lineup that already consists of All-Star players Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson would make them the favorites to win the Eastern Conference title next year.

As for the Nets, the move is a cost-cutting measure. Both Alston and Battie are in the last year of their contracts, and trading for them would shave $16.5 million off New Jersey's roster in the summer of 2010 and put the Nets well below the salary cap.

The deal, if completed, would also give the Nets a young, promising shooting guard in Lee.

Chad Ford covers the NBA and NBA draft for ESPN Insider.

Some reasoning behind the Magic' thoughts.

It seems the Magic really dont want to go Luxury deep over Turkoglu, as trading for Vince Carter would make them overpay enough as it is. Its not ruled out, but the chances really dropped, Id still do it just to have Turk still and be like LA and Bos who overpay for talent.
The Magic figure trading for Vince is better than having Turkoglu (or great to play with together), and the Magic only lose backups Battie/Alston and promising rookie Courtney Lee. Admittedly, I feel C. Lee is a small blow to it, but you’re talking about a VINCE CARTER! replacement who should play top levels for a few more seasons.
SA Spurs alrdy tried trading their 3 expiring deals for Vince, and NJ declined for not receiving anything promising with the expiring deals. Magic prolly thought hey, they can trade 2 big expirings in Battie/Alston and then give up a promising piece of C. Lee to receive Vince Carter. And thus, the deal.
My personal thoughts is this is a win now move, and a GREAT one at that. Regardless if Turk stays, or Vince is the replacement, Magic just made a HUGE upgrade. Im very excited, I think its a GREAT MOVE!
Some Vinsanity facts from last season:
20.8PPG, 4.7APG, 5.1RPG, 43.7 FG%, and 38.5 3P%. Clearly the assists show Vince is ready to take a playmaker role as well like Turk was, should Turk be gone, while giving out much better PPG and %‘s.
Scouting report: Carter is an ace scorer because he can do it so many different ways. Though his stupendous leaping ability makes him an explosive finisher, he’s also an excellent outside shooter who must be played tightly. He’s strong off the dribble, too, with good vision and the muscle to finish plays at the rim.

Neither is C. Lee

That missed layup sent him packing

by Rotudo on Jun 25, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah,

rumor is he is a little cocky and doesn’t get along with the players on a regular basis. If you notice, he is always arguing with the players after every timeout of break in action. He also seemed to have that whatever attitude after that missed layup. It was like “oh well. I missed a shot. Sue me.”

it hurts to give up courtney, but a lineup of

assuming we re-sign hedo.

Anderson would be interesting. He's a somewhat "soft" PF, but he shot 39.6% from 3PT in college

He was 36.5% as a rookie, so he’d help stretch the floor on offense

Yeah, he's good on offense and a decent rebounder

I’m just worried about his defense and his hands. He had 0.2 blocks per foul, compared to Lewis’ 0.52 blocks per foul – he’s a Hedo-esque blocker (Turk’s at 0.18). He’s also not a good passer, which could be an issue in our offense, but I think his upside outweighs the negatives, particularly given his youth.

According to Yahoo
If the Nets move Carter, they will draft Louisville shooting guard Terrence Willams at No. 11, if he’s still available.

The source categorgized the deal as "close" and it could be consummated by the end of the night.

I just looked and he’s only missed 9 games in his last 4 years for the Nets.

Gotta say I like it.

If we are able to resign Hedo, which Otis should go deep in the tax to do, then look at it like this:

PG: Nelson (Johnson) -same as last years start
SG: Carter (Redick) – VC is an upgrade over Lee short-term
SF: Turkoglu (Pietrus) – same
PF: Lewis (Anderson) – Anderson is a better version of Battie with more range at this point
C: Howard (Still not sure here)

Lotta talent in that rotation.

Another AWESOME thing.

When the Magic get into those absolutely horrible one quarter offensive collapses, because they dont trust in their plays and PRs or are facing tough defense, they can now have 1 player VC who can absolutely still take a good shot anytime himself. Plus, after finding out Ryan Anderson will be part of it, a young, potential PF with shooting! Very nice.

Just a couple of quick notes/questions

1) I know losing Lee sucks, but Anderson is a very underrated PF. Very good three point shooter who should fit well into our system.

2) Orlando must have been impressed w/JJ this season. Getting rid of Lee makes him the undisputed back-up SG

3) Are we still in the mix for Hedo after this trade or will it not be financially vialbe?

If Carter is in addition to Hedo I LOVE this trade…if its to replace him, I just like it.

by Lee for three on Jun 25, 2009 5:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I'm not sure what adding Vince to our team vs what we lose in Alston and Battie will give us in terms of cap numbers.

Would be interesting to see how serious Devos and management were in saying they’d be willing to go into the luxury tax to sign Hedo once the numbers are figured out from this deal, which seems to be all but a done deal at this point!

No way are we much worse than last season if we don't get Hedo back.

We’ll still probably bring in a cheaper wing guy and Carter can single-handedly take over games on a consistent bases more than Hedo can. I’d love it if we had both, but Carter is more than a suitable replacement if Hedo walks.

Here's the question...

Vince, Pietrus, and Anderson,

or

CLee, Turk, and Battie?

I like the former. Make the trade Otis.

1 – Nelson, AJ
2 – VC, JJ
3 – Pietrus, Free Agent
4 – Lewis, Anderson
5 – Howard, Gortat (if we don’t resign Turk, we can afford him).

by TragicMatt on Jun 25, 2009 5:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree :)

Vince upgrades Turk the guy taking 40mins of PT. Anderson is going to be better than Battie very soon, maybe this season with tons of PT he’ll get. Pietrus is so good, we alrdy saw him take C. Lee’ mins this last playoffs, its a win now move and w/ or w/o Turk Magic just hugely upgraded.

by derekk on Jun 25, 2009 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The other part of this has to do with how well Pietrus played.

Orlando figured to win a title, we’ll probably have ot go through Kobe and Lebron again. Lee just didn’t have the size to defend those guys and it was Air France who got a bulk of the defensive minutes.

SA went after Vince first before getting Jefferson, and I easily see Vinsanity as an upgrade on Turk should he be truly gone. Anderson is that kind of shooter PF we’ve been looking for too, while so decent at 21 yrs old and 1 yr of experience alrdy.

Whoa

Otis has got some serious huevos to pull this off a day after Shaq goes to Cleveland. I am SHOCKED! Vince Carter & Ryan Anderson?

Quick glance at the salaries for next year, with Vince and Anderson’s contract it puts us at about 68 million for 8 players w/o Turk. Say we pay Turk 9 mil next year, thats 77 plus the league minimum guys we would need to fill out the roster. I’m guessing 80 million in salaries, which will be about 12 million over the tax threshold. The time is now!

Wow. I don’t even know what I’m typing.
