Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Phoenix center Shaquille O’Neal is creeping closer to joining the championship chase with LeBron James, league sources said on Wednesday.

The Shaq-to-Cleveland trade talks have gained momentum and Cavaliers officials are nearing the conclusion they should make the move for O’Neal, sources said. Now, they have to find the package that’ll work with Phoenix.

One league executive says there’s an "inevitability" to the talks and that, "It’s going to get done."

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports says Shaq will be a Cavalier before too long. Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic are believed to be the bait

UPDATE: it's official, per Yahoo! Sports. Wallace, Pavlovic, and the 46th pick in Thursday's draft are off to Phoenix for Shaq.

Good.

I’ve been rooting for Shaq to go to Cleveland since the rumors began. It does nothing to change the matchup problems the Cavaliers have with the Magic. It beats the Cavs getting a young stud to pair with LeBron.

me too E

Shaq is still Shaq but I just dont see how this pairing is supposed to do wonders for CLE, especially against us and our shooting. Someone make sense of this for me, please?

Shaq gives the Cavs a post presence, defensively and offensively

They needed someone who could score on the low block, and Shaq is that guy. He’s also fairly well equipped to defend Dwight. But I don’t think he’s a huge difference-maker. He and Z posted nearly identical rebounding and block rates last season, and neither can defend the pick-and-roll.

Anything to keep LeBron I guess

oh well, Dwight on Jimmy Fallon right now

Like I said, glad Cleveland made that trade ..

.. instead of going out and pairing a young stud with LeBron.

Yea, Im really glad it wasnt a young stud. I deftly agree with you there, but Shaq is off books in 1 yr too. Still will be interesting if we saw some tape on them two. I know Shaq contains him based on previous matchups.

Yeah, Cleveland is still in position to sign a Bosh-type player in 2010.

.. so if the Shaq experiment doesn’t work out, there’s a fall-back plan for them.

Very interesting :)

So whos stopping Lewis and Turk? LBJ can take 1 sure, but then he is too tired 1 game in after only 8 games before the series. Shaq can deftly mess with Dwight, and even get in his head worst case scenario, but I dont see it with both getting 1 more year of experience, and how Orlando beat Boston with Dwight relatively contained offensively.

by derekk on Jun 25, 2009 12:57 AM EDT reply actions

Shaq can give the Cavaliers an added punch, offensively.

.. and defensively, he can put a body on Dwight in the low block. But the pick & roll? Yeah, enough said.

Honestly, I don’t see how Shaq is that different from Ilgauskas at all. As mentioned, their rebound and block rates are similar. They’re both big guys whose main issues at this point are mobility and durability. Obviously Shaq is bigger (than basically anyone ever), but Ilgauskas has size on his side too — he’s 7’3", and while he lists at 260, I bet he weighs more than that at this point in his career.

Offensively, the difference is more one of style than of effectiveness — I would say Shaq’s 17.8 PPG in 30 MPG for the ultra-fast Phoenix offense is just about the same number as Ilgauskas’ 12.9 in 27.2 MPG for the ultra-slow Cavs.

Which brings up another thing: has Shaq ever played on a team with such a methodical offense? Obviously Phoenix is Phoenix, Orlando was pretty fast, LA had the triangle… I don’t know about the pace in Miami when Shaq was there, though they were pretty slow this year. But Cleveland… Cleveland averaged 91.2 possessions this season. That’s only 0.8 more possessions than the Spurs. Not saying that’s good or bad; the slower be the best thing for an aging Shaq. But it also doesn’t strike me as the kind of offense where Shaq will be able to fully utilize his passing skills.

It also raises the question of how Shaq and Ilgauskas can coexist… can you imagine either of them playing PF, even for a few minutes? Yeah, me neither.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

Shaq and Z won't start together.

Ilguaskas is at a point in his career where he’s best served coming off the bench. Cleveland knows that.

Maybe...

But I feel like he’s better than a 15-20 MPG guy. And that’s what they’ve just made him.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

That's all he really can be, at this point.

.. they need to pace Shaq and Z so neither are gassed in the playoffs.

When Shaq was with the Heat, their pace varied from 89.9 to 91.6

The O’Neal Suns went from 96.7 when he joined them to 96.0 last year.

Seeing as it's late and I don't really feel like looking this up...

I would assume that Shaq is now or is closing in on the record for most teams played for by a hall-of-famer. There’s now doubt Shaq is going into the hall and now he’s on team #5. And maybe more to come. This has got to be closing in on some kind of record…since most hall-of-fame caliber players get locked into one team for a long time.

Moses Malone might have it?

Off the top of my head, he played for Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Milwaukee, San Antonio, Washington and I think I just read he even played for the L.A. Clippers while they were the Buffalo Braves (they definitely drafted him, but I cannot remember if he played for them or got immediately traded to Houston).

Another Stern-approved team gets a contributor for next to nothing.

Lakers get Gasol, Boston get Garnett and Allen (they gave up Al Jefferson but upgraded for win-now purposes with KG), Spurs get Jefferson for the 90-year old Bruce Bowen, Tim Thomas and Oberto.

We have to give up 3 players plus a first for Alston.

Since we made that Finals run, I expect to get Chris Bosh for Battie and a Jeremy Richardson bobble-head (which would probably contribute more than the actual J-RIch)

Good one about the Bosh trade

Now you’ve got me seriously wondering if there is a Jeremy Richardson bobblehead collection out there. If they gave those away at the gate before a Magic game, would fans refuse to enter the building despite already paying for their tickets?

From the standpoint of a magic fan

I’m totally ambivalent about this move. From a defensive standpoint I don’t think it really helped Cleveland at all against us. A Dwight + Jameer pick and roll would eat any lineup with Shaq in it alive. Shaq is absolutely terrible against the pick and roll, and with Dwight diving to the rim, Jameer’s ridiculous midrange accuracy and his quickness, I don’t see how we could not get a high percentage shot every time down with that play. Of course, it would have helped this year, as I don’t think a Hedo+Dwight or Rafer+Dwight pick and roll would be quite as good at taking advantage of his defensive shortcomings.

Offensively it does help them a good bit. I don’t think it helped them nearly enough to overcome a healthy roster on our side, but then that’s a question that will be answered on the courts.

It’s a similar story against the rest of the league, but then Cleveland didn’t need much help beating teams other than the Magic, Celts, and Lakers.

If nothing else, it will be interesting to watch them next season, to see how Shaq fits into that team. His ego is definitely going to have to take a back seat to LeBron!

Your last sentence says it all.

Shaq’s ego will not allow him to take a back seat to anybody, sadly. The man is so full of himself, you’d think he just spent the last 17 years saving orphans from burning school buses and such.

I think Shaq is smart and willing enough to defer to LeBron.

.. he really has no other choice, in my opinion.

Yeah...

For a guy who has this reputation as an egotist, he’s coexisted (on the court, if not off it) with a LOT of star guards. I don’t foresee that being a problem.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.

Think they might trade Z?

They have a lot of money tied up at the C position. They could probably get a shooter for him or something.

by Zack Magic on Jun 25, 2009 6:42 AM EDT reply actions

They're hamstrung right now

There’s no way Shaq can play 48 minutes a game for 82 games + possible playoffs.

No,I dont think so, because the Cavs didnt adjust to any Magic F’s in this trade, in fact they musta hurt it tradin away their best chips. Even if they seem a good matchup now, the Magic ‘s best choice is to resign Turk, they cant sign players over the cap even w/ turk gone. And its not really affecting other teams’ views on Turk b/c Shaq has switched to another team.

I have to wonder how long Mike Brown will last with Shaq on his roster.

He was already under scrutiny for how he was severely outcoached during the the ECF, now he has The Big Ego on his team, who will probably complain about not seeing the ball enough in Brown’s grind-it-out offense. Should make for a temultuous year in Cleveland, especially with it being Bron’s last year under contract.
