Draft?What Draft?

The upcoming Draft has become an afterthought for Magic fans since the Magic don't have any picks this year (1st rounder sent to Memphis, 2nd rounder owed to Sea/OKC for Lewis Sign-and-trade). The Draft is not anything real special this year but there are few guys I would like to say a few things about:

  • Terrence Williams & Earl Clark look like Hedo and Shard part II. Williams is not as tall as Hedo but has a well rounded game like Turk's. Clark should be looking at Lewis' tapes to emulate his game as much as possible.
  • 3 guys I like: Flynn, Lawson, Curry. 3 guys I don't like: Mullens, Daye, DeRozan.
  • Did you know there are only 2 projected Centers for the 1st round?
  • Every year, there are talented players that drop to the second round. Last year it was Chalmers, Mbah A Moute, Douglas-Roberts. The year before, it was Landry, Marc Gasol, Sessions. Looking at draftexpress.com's lastest mock, here are a couple guys I think the Magic should target if they are able to get a 2nd rounder somewhere: Patrick Mills-PG-St. Marys, AJ Price-PG-UConn, DaJuan Summers-F-G'Town

I wanted to start something involving the Draft because even though the Magic do not have any picks, what other teams do can affect the Magic. I thought the Kings and Raptors were the top teams that would try to sign Turk but it looks like the Blazers are now in the conversation. The Blazers are a bigger threat because of the draft picks, aggresssive GM, and an owner willing to pay whatever. Should be an interesting Draft night.

Yeah, I'm a little bummed the Magic don't have a pick

It’s the last big NBA event of the season, and we aren’t even participating. You’re right though; it should be interesting what the Blazers do. If they trade away some of their small forwards for draft picks or other pieces, it would show they will be pursuing Hedo.

in this draft?

better be a top five pick

Actually i'm completely fine

not getting immediate value from a pick. Anything in the Top 20 will do as long as we can finagle a good amount of money from that team as well. It gives us a lot of flexibility, and the ability to pick any player we want and develop them ourselves.

by fwedo on Jun 23, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if that's smart now

I’m all for a revolving door of fresh talent, but not for a point guard who has proven he can take a team to the finals. I’m not drinking the koolaid on a non lottery pick because we wouldn’t get a player who can contribute next season. Courtney Lee was a special pick, Orlando has never made a better draft pick considering the timing. That won’t happen this year.

Depending who's on the board, I wouldn't mind dishing Rafer for a 1st.

.. he’s going to be 33. His value won’t be higher. Time to move him.

You can’t definitively say the Magic can’t make another good pick late in the first round. It’s impossible to know unless Orlando has a pick and makes a selection. Until then, it’s a guess.

I hope you're kidding ..

.. the draft may be “weak” but it’s all in the eye of the beholder. A top five pick is almost always money.

Flynn will be the most NBA-raedy PG

but Rubio and Evans have more upside. Regardless, Flynn is going to be a very good pro for years to come.

My take on Flynn

He definitely had great success w/Memphis after moving to the point.

He’s as strong as an ox and a great penetrator. If he develops a jumpshot, he could wind up being the best PG out of this draft. I still think he’s a little more raw than Flynn. Jonny will be able to contribute from Day 1 where I think it will take a little longer for Evans. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Evans turns out to be better than Rubio or Flynn.

Clark would be a good get to start grooming for Lewis’s departure in 4 years. I also like Daren Collins UCLA pg, especially if he falls in the 2cd round. He can shoot the 3 and get to the bucket and finish. I love Lawson.

The draft class may suck...

But I’m still looking forward to Thursday even though we don’t have a pick (yet). I finished my mock draft last night (I’m a nerd) and I realized how unpredictable thsi draft really is. Memphis and OKC could literally take anyone and it would make sense. There are about 15 point guards and the talent disparity is not wide at all.

In years like this, if someone in your top five doesn’t fall you may be better off taking the sure bet. Sam Young is that sure bet, solid defensive guy but what you see is what you get. This is not the time to draft high risk players.

What do we really have to offer?

I agree with magic fanatic that if we trade Rafer that it has to be at least in the Top 10 and most of those guys are looking to rebuild. Unless the pick comes with a big in the package I don’t think Rafer will be on the move in the draft.

I also don’t see anyone taking Battie for a pick.

So what else can we offer besides future picks? Maybe JJ?

by bandrewg08 on Jun 23, 2009 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

Cash, and taking a long term player back in some cases I think

Like Amir Johnson and pick 15 for Cash. But if Magic could add Battie instead for expiring?
Oh, and JJ is an option Id guess, but I d rather hold onto him.

by derekk on Jun 23, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Cash will not help in trying to resign Turk

In that trade, your paying for Johnson the pick AND giving up cash. That has to be at least 5 mil gone. Plus, Detroit would not go for that deal.

Realistically, to get a pick, future draft picks and JJ are the only valuable assets we have to offer.

by bandrewg08 on Jun 23, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Detroit doesn't need cash.

That trade would never happen.

Its a confirmed rumor that Detroit offered Amir Johnson and #15 for Cash from the Thunder. They just took it back, but it was out there for a few weeks indeed.

Thats why I said switch out for Battie. Its more money, just wait one year. But otherwise, yea very hard to have Amir w/o maneuvering Battie/Alston for less money in return.

by derekk on Jun 23, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

No one is giving a Top 10 pick for Rafer.

.. that’s ridiculous. A late first round pick, maybe.

I agree

What I meant was that I don’t think giving him up is worth a pick out of the Top 10. Maybe around 15 if it’s packaged with a cheap veteran big. I just don’t think this draft is deep enough to give up Rafer for a mid-late 1st.

by bandrewg08 on Jun 23, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the draft is deep enough ..

.. there’s plenty of prospects out there for the Magic to snag in the mid-to-late 1st round.

I guess I still don't have enough faith in our management with drafting

Courtney Lee, like someone said earlier, may turn out to be our best non #1 draft pick ever, given the circumstances (value at #22, ready to play on contender, started, filled need, etc).

But given our history, I still don’t really trust that we can make another good pick two years in a row. That’s why I don’t think it’s worth giving up Rafer for one, unless it comes with a solid role player who will help us win next year. Though I hope Otis proves me wrong if we do get our hands on one.

by bandrewg08 on Jun 23, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, with Smith at the helm ..

.. in the first round, he’s picked Redick and Lee. Not bad. He whiffed on Vazquez, but Fran could be a useful player for the Magic if he ever decides to come over from Europe.

May never happen, unfortunately.

Like I said, depending on who’s available, I wouldn’t mind trading into the first round.

Looking back on it the JJ pick wasn't as terrible as I thought,

but I still don’t see how you can give Otis credit for that pick. It took the guy three years to develop into a semi-viable option off the bench.

At the time, I really wanted us to take Brewer or Carney. Carney hasn’t really panned out (but it’s not like JJ is any better) but Brewer has been very reliable for Utah.

All in all though that year’s draft may have been one of the least deep in recent memory. After Roy at 6 look at who you have:

9 – Patrick O’Bryant
10 – Saer Sene
12 – Hilton Armstrong
15 – Cedric Simmons
17 – Shawne Williams
18 – Oleskiy Pecherov
19 – Quincy Douby

Yikes.

Yeah, no first for skip

Marcus Camby was traded for a second round pick. Although technically we traded for Skip for a first; I don’t think another team will do it.

2nd round guys have a lot of reward and little risk: 700k cost, no long-term commitment. If they make a move; it should be for a 2nd round pick if they like a guy who has slid to the 2nd round.

The exception to my logic is Earl Clark

If he slips out of the top 18, we should be pushing hard to trade for him. I’m not saying Rafer is worth trading, but Earl Clark would fit in great in Orlando. The extra depth could allow Pietrus to play the 2 spot more often as opposed to coming in for Hedo.

I’m not saying I want this to happen, but I can imagine Indiana would be interested in packaging their pick for Rafer. They need a young point guard but they are too high up in the draft to get a top 6 point guard (crazy).

Love the Magic inviting LaVance Fields from Pitt to play on their summer league team. He is a Jameer clone and I’m not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing; but I love his toughness and leadership. I hope he gets an invite to camp if he plays well.

I like Fields.

He reminds me a LOT of Khalid El-Amin. Which doesn’t sound that promising, but I always felt that El-Amin got a raw deal… his one NBA season, he was a pretty decent passer for a Chicago team that was in a complete shambles. And his shooting was lousy, but again, he was playing for a lousy team. There’s no doubt in my mind that, if El-Amin had ended up on a good team out of college, he would’ve become at least a solid backup in the NBA.

Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
