Dwight Howard has expressed an interest in becoming a movie star, but it appears the New York Post jumped the gun with a report this weekend that said the Magic big man was set to begin shooting a film in August. [...]
Mary Ford, who works with Howard's agent, said Howard is in talks with different studios about the movie, but nothing has been determined, including filming dates and potential co-stars. She called most of the information in the report "inaccurate."

oh God, please no. This is shaping up to be Shaq part 2.
Dwight, you have bigger needs to address, such as finding new post moves, while improving your current post-moves and FREE THROW PERCENTAGE!! No movies for you! Wait until retirement, please.
It’ll go like this, Dwight makes a movie this summer. Dwight loves making said movie. Dwight wants to make more movies. When Dwight is a free agent he flees to LA to continue making “off-season” movies.

I think people need to give Dwight the benefit of the doubt ..
.. and take this news with a grain of salt. It’s all speculation.

lol how did I know you wouldn't react negatively to this news?
It’s ok to do so.

Because I'm not the type of person to overreact all the time.

No and it's partly because you don't take all the facts into consideration.
His agent comes out and says he’s talking to multiple studios about doing a movie and you respond by saying, “it’s all speculation.”

Again, I was referring to the news post.
Not what his agent said.

True, you posted that further down, so I didn't see it when I responded.
Anyways, it’s not very clear and it doesn’t make sense, regardless of what the post says, it’s not ‘all speculation.’ Whatever’s clever I guess. Do you honestly think it’s a good idea for Dwight to be exploring possible movie roles? He’ll have plenty of time for it in retirement, he’s got too much to work on right now.

No, I don't. I'm with everyone else here.
But like I said, I’m not going to trip over it. Too early to tell .. at this point.

By the way, if his agent says...
he’s in talks with different studios
… it really isn’t “all speculation,” sounds more to me like the negotiation phase.

Wait..what year is it? 1996?
Ha, just playing! Although heads up Dwight. I’m sure Shaq thought Kazaam was a good idea at the time too.

Seriously...
NBA players making movie is a terrible idea. Kazaam (Shaq), My Giant (Muresan), Double Team (Dennis Rodman), The Perfect Score (Darius Miles), these were all BAD movies.
The only some-what successful use of NBA Players in a movie were (Olowakandi, Miles and QRichardson) in a cameo appearance in Van Wilder.

Correction:
Other LEGIT basketball player movies were: Blue Chips (Hardaway), Space Jam (Jordan, Barkley, Ewing, Bogues, LJohnson), He Got Game (RAllen) & Celtic Pride (Bird).

Doug Smith, who covers the Toronto Raptors for the Toronto Star, has a great take on these sorts of situations.
Raptors All-Star Chris Bosh is also pursuing a career in showbiz, and he catches a lot of heat for it with Toronto’s fans. Smith, in response to a mailbag question, nails it:
This kills me, it really does. Does anyone really expect anyone – you, me, Chris Bosh, Joe Blow – to work 24/7/365 at their job, especially a job as physically demanding as being a professional athlete?
Mike Grange ™ did an excellent piece last week on Bosh’s off-season training plans, plans that include a lot of time in the gym and on the court. He is not sitting around eating bon-bons and dreaming up comedy bits every day of the summer.
So, for you and others who think that way, please go into work on Monday, sit down in your bosses office and tell them you want to forgo every day of vacation you’ll ever get so you can focus entirely on your job and have no life. And then report back to me in six months and tell me how burned out you are.
If Dwight—or any professional athlete—wants to do a movie, that’s fine. There’s enough time in the summer to balance fun things (like moviemaking, or attending award shows, etc) with work things (like improving free-throw shooting and post moves). It’s not an either/or proposition.
More recently, Smith shot another barb:
So I’m flipping through the dial last night and there’s good old Chris Bosh at the Much Music Video Awards and I’m thinking:
Imagine that, on a Sunday night in June, a 25-year-old kid with an interest in video and music is taking part in one of the more prestigious (or so I assume) events on the music video calendar instead of being in some gym working on his drop step and jump shot before he lifted weights.
Trade his sorry, non-competitive ass, I say.
He’s snippy, but right. Nobody got upset when Dwight posted all those goofy photos of him and his buddies on Twitter last week, but suddenly he wants to do a movie and people are up-in-arms. They’re not that different, if you think about it. Neither involves improving his basketball skills, and both are fun activities. So why is one okay and not the other?
It's hypocritical, that's for sure.
.. if it’s a movie, people freak out.
