the presence of a PF
orlando is going to have difficulty maintaining depth at the 4 as the summer lends itself to fall and we gear up for the start of the regular season. marcin gortat has become too relevant around the league, undoing his status as the magic's best kept secret and its no secret at all that tony battie is simply not cutting it any more. if the magic are able to resign turk, which i expect them to do then the next order of business should be getting ourselves a quality back up for rashard and dwight.
there are three bigs that i am interested in talking about this offseason including paul millsap, brandon bass, and antonio mcdyess. it seems that utah fans are fairly invested in millsap so his acquisition might be more difficult than i had hoped. however, brandon bass' scouting report makes him sound like a young, better version of tony battie capable of converting on put backs and shooting the 15-17 foot jumper with consistency as well as averaging an 86% clip from the charity stripe. his defensive defencies come from his lack of size when defender a back to the basket style PF. but with dwight howard's insane ability as a help defender, that shouldn't be too much of an issue.
scouting report--- http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Brandon-Bass-53/
he is an unrestricted free agent this summer and still under his rookie contract making less than 1 million this past season. if it is possible to dump tony battie's contract onto someone, i feel that bass would be a great fit here.
antonio mcdyess is a popular guy on this blog because he is sick nasty awesome and he destorys the magic every time we face off against the pistons. remember the game this season against the pistons (possibly the last game we played against them) where he coralled almost every offensive board in the fourth quarter and stole the game back? yeah, i want that guy. he is old but to have him as a back up for dwight might be a great thing for us. he'd probably get 10-15 minutes per gameand would surely make the most of them. if i were him, i would not be resigning with the pistons to end my career; they are rebuilding.
how does the community feel about these players and what their impact might be for us? is it financially feasible if we unload battie and alstons contracts and resign turkoglu?

Yes to both Bass and McDyess
I’m a fan.

Bass
Bass should be our #1 priority outside of Hedo. He is a perfect fit even though he is undersized, he can rebound with the best of them. He is a athletic beast, young, and can knock down the open elbow jumper. I love his heart and determination.
I would be ecstatic for Dice, but how much longer can he really play?

Thing is, the Magic (unless Otis does some maneuvering) won't have the money for Bass.
McDyess is a more realistic option because he would only command the veteran’s minimum.

Yes sir.
What kind of deal do you think he will command?

Veteran's minimum.
In my opinion, at least.

You think so?
I thought that with his stellar play this year, he’d be able to get more than the minimum. I’d say he’s worth far more than a Miki Moore or even a Joe Smith.

At this point in his career, that's all I see Dice netting.
There’s no way a soon-to-be 35 year old player is getting more than that. He may.
.. but that’d be a mistake.

Devils advocate...
Bass is probably the most realistic option of the three, though his height is going to be a big problem. Hedo has two inches on him at the SF spot. Rashard is already a slightly undersized PF. It’s going to make some matchups very difficult for Stan if we back Rashard up with a guy who’s 6-8, 230.
Paul Millsap is an absolute BEAST and I have a monster mancrush on him. The issue with Millsap is that with Carlos Boozer out for so much of the regular season, the whol world got a chance to see what Utah’s been hiding on the bench. He’s absolutely worthy of a starting big man job in the NBA, and I’ll be impressed if Utah holds onto him, Okur, and Boozer. You know what though, if Boozer leaves, like he’s been talking about doing, Millsap leaves them in a position where they’ve lost very little. Seriously, Millsap coming off the bench is like the Raptors bringing in Jose Calderon a few years ago. The starting guy gets hurt and then the “sub” comes in and dominates. Very little chance of seeing this great player in a Magic uniform.
Mcdyess is a great vet, who’s showed some surprising spring in his step, but I don’t see him as much of an upgrade from Tony Battie at this stage. He’s flat out a better player, mind you, but he’s old. The Magic need to invest in a 3 year guy, and Mcdyess could go south next year, or the year after that, easily. I’ll poke around and see if I can find other options for us to consider…
Good post.

both bass and millsap are 6’8’’ 250 lbs according to espn. the draft express source i used says bass 6’ 7’’
either way 250 lbs compacted into a 6’7’’ body with a 7’2’’ wingspan.. barkley-esque
Nah' mean, nah'm sayin

You're right.
My bad. I’m amazed Millsap is so short. He’s played center for the Jazz without too many issues.
Bass’s stats are amazingly consistant. Over 2 years, he’s contibuted the following at 20 min per game:
- 8 pts on 50% shooting
- 2 FTs at 82-86%
- 1.5 OREBs and 3 DREBs
He had a couble bigger games toward the ned of the Mavs playoff run, getting to the line for 12 of 14 and 7 of 8 FTs against Denver.

Great fanpost :)
Yea I like all three you mentioned. Id love for this fanpost to keep growing with good free agent choices too.
Ill tell you right now, Im not sure how they’d drop Battie. He is expiring and a quality big, but is old. And as old as Dice is, its a clear upgrade on Battie for sure. He rebounds at a rate with teh league’s best still I think, even more so offensively. Id prefer him to back up Lewis mainly actually, Hes a jump shooter on offense and wouldnt get in Dwights way.
Bass, Id have to see more, but yes I like him.
Millsap I deftly like, but is going to be too much money for the Magic. Im under the assumption Magic will resign Turkoglu. They will be dancing right below tax, and even probly enter it to fill out the roster. Millsap would deflty enter tax and kill it big time too.
I think the Magic still have Doolings 3.3mil Trade Exception. If so, they can offer it to alot of veteran and young PF/C FA’s, and backload it if the FA wants a higher average for his whole contract.
Alot of fans may not like him, but Boston is over the lux by nearly 2mil with only 11 spots with Glen “Big Baby” Davis a unrestricted FA. I think the Magic can steal him, He has the low, heavy set body to guard post players well, but some quickness and athleticism too. He is a great option to play with Dwight because he can live with jumpshooting highpost and away like Dice and Battie.
I also like Ike Diogu, and believe Detroit would take Battie for Amir Johnson or Jason Maxiell to clear 2010 cap.
Alot of teams are selling draft picks I think, so another idea for the Magic is to buy one particularly in the 10-21 range and then a 2nd rounder too. And draft big PF/C’s they like. As long as the defense of the picks is fair enough, they can play, and the Magic can afford to have a project with thier offense. DeJuan Blair is my favorite prospect, would love him for Magic, but also some of the top rankings PFs include Tyler Hansborough, James Johnson, Derrick Brown, DeMare Caroll, Jeff Pendergraph, and Taj Gibson.
Gibson and Caroll are thought to be good rebounders and tough, Brown and Johnson have a perimeter game.

espn trade machine
says we still have dooling’s trade exception, which in itself is a decent offer for bass. good call.
i don’t know if detroit would give up jason maxiell. he’s a good piece for them and unless they just want battie so they can unload his contract next summer it doesn’t make sense to me. glen davis should not leave boston if he knows what’s good for him. also, i can’t cheer for that guy. i was at game four vs boston.
i haven’t looked into any draft picks simply because we don’t have any unless we trade for one.
Nah' mean, nah'm sayin

Millsap isn't coming to Orlando, so we can scrap that idea.
.. Bass and McDyess might be realistic scenarios. The issue will be money. Assuming Rafer Alston gets traded, the Magic might be able to land a decent back-up big. Still too early to tell, at this point.

From a couple weeks ago..
The rumor is that the Pistons would send their 1st round pick (No. 15) and Amir Johnson to the Thunder for cash.
Perhaps chaning that target team to the Magic would be a good move? I think so :)

A first and Amir Johnson for Hedo?
.. I’ll pass.

Everything I talk about in this fanpost is assuming Hedo is resigned and there are no trades involving MP,Lee,Nelson,Dwight,Lewis,Turk.
So unless u mean Magic will be too deep in Lux after this AND resigning Turk that they’d only do the first and not resign Turk which doesnt make any sense at all. Its just a throw out idea, Magic could maybe instead of giving cash, give Battie’s expiring contract.

Chris “Birdman” Andersen is an idea, but I’d rather have a big who can handle other bigs. Not an energy blocking specialist. But its another thought that others could think fits better.
by derekk on Jun 21, 2009 9:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I like Andersen too, but he's nearly 31, which is a concern
What happens to shot-blockers and rebounders who rely on their athleticism after they lose said athleticism?
by Ben Q Rock on Jun 21, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Anderson gets cashed out..
I don’t think Orlando could afford him.

There's also the character issue
I think he’s fine now (and I love his play style), but there could be concerns from management about Birdman’s past.

Well he has had those years off
and his minutes have never been too high so he doesn’t have alot of miles on those tires. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t start to physically decline until he’s 34-35.

But I don't think it really matters.
Everyone in Denver LOVES him. There will be blood if the Nuggets do not resign him.

I think all deals with Detroit for Rafer are off.
Even if they lose Iverson, they’ve got two young PGs that they like, that can handle all the minutes, and there’s not room for Skip there.

I like fat boy from charlotte.
Sean May. Doesn’t the team have an option on him this year that they won’t pick up. Once he gets in shape he will be on the most improved watch list.

Yea ur right
I was thinking they might want to keep cutting costs by letting 1 of the 2 go for an expiring or cash or something quickly gone. But they’re pretty well under cap as is anyways, so it deftly seems like a no period.

he’s a free agent now and won’t command more than the minimum now, imo. like i said, i like fat boy.
