Los Angeles Lakers 99, Orlando Magic 86
The NBA's 2008/09 season ended Sunday night when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic, 99-86, to win their 15th NBA title. Finals MVP winner Kobe Bryant tallied 30 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 blocked shots to cap off a tremendous series, while the tandem of Pau Gasol (14 points, 15 rebounds, 4 blocks) and Lamar Odom (17 points, 10 rebounds) controlled the paint. Orlando shot 48% en route to jumping out to a 28-26 lead after one period, but the Lakers went on a 16-0 run in the middle of the second period, dealing the Magic a blow from which they could not recover. The middle periods were Orlando's undoing, as it shot 13-of-39 for 33 points and committed 10 turnovers as the Lakers took a 15-point lead into the final frame. Rashard Lewis led Orlando with 18 points and 10 boards, but shot just 6-of-19 from the field. In truth, no Magic player really delivered tonight, on either end of the court.
| Team | Pace | Efficiency | eFG% | FT Rate | OReb% | TO Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lakers | 86 | 107.6 | 48.8% | 26.3 | 30.2 | 13.0 |
| Magic | 93.3 | 46.3% | 12.2 | 15.0 | 14.1 |
Be it the cloudy skies or the unusual number of Lakers fans in attendance, but this game had a certain ominous feeling to it, as though Orlando was simply fated not to fare so well. Even after the first quarter, one got the sense it would not be the Magic's night. The Lakers were quicker to every loose ball and enjoyed a heathy, 16-11 advantage on the glass. Dwight Howard couldn't buy a free-throw attempt no matter how hard he got hit--this is not a dig at the officials, who "let the players play," so to speak, on both ends of the floor throughout the game--Lewis couldn't find the range, and Hedo Turkoglu didn't have any room to shoot as former Magic forward Trevor Ariza blanketed him better than anyone else I've ever seen; and yes, that includes noted Magic-killer Tayshaun Prince of the Detroit Pistons. As has been their wont, the Lakers left the Magic's iffy backcourt of Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston tee-off, a decision that worked out well for L.A. Lee had his finest game of the Finals offensively (12 points, 5-of-11 shooting, mostly good choices), but Alston clanked his fair share of open jumpers, doing his part to help the Lakers' defense and transition game.
Another word on that front, actually. Los Angeles held Orlando to worse than 100 points per 100 possessions in 4 of the 5 games in this series, winning each of those games. The one time the Magic's offense broke through, with 108 points in 82 possessions for an offensive rating of 132.0, the Lakers themselves popped off for 104 points. This is a team that, personnel-wise, has what it takes to contain the Magic. An example: With the outcome already sealed late in the fourth quarter, Lewis drove at Gasol, whom many people including myself believed could not adequately defend Lewis in this series. Gasol didn't let Lewis get the step on him, stuck with the Magic's star forward, and cleanly blocked his running J attempt. And throughout the game, he mustered the strength to force Howard into some poor looks, holding him to 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, all-told. Impressive work by the supposedly "soft" Euro big man.
Orlando was simply helpless tonight offensively. Howard couldn't work inside, nobody could make a jump shot, and free throw attempts came at a premium. The Magic would have needed to play lock-down defense in order to win tonight, and that didn't happen. The Lakers have Orlando's double-team schemes all figured out, and moved the ball beautifully to find the open man on the perimeter, and in this way some of what they did offensively tonight resembled what the Magic are able to do against most defenses in this league. They made Orlando pay, with 8 treys in 16 attempts. But they didn't need the long-ball to stay in the game. Gasol and his array of post moves were too much for the Magic to handle, while Bryant hit some fairly well-defended two-pointers himself. The Lakers weren't exactly an offensive juggernaut tonight, but they nonetheless got the job done against what was the league's best defense during the regular season. Tonight's game--and hell, this entire series--is a case of one team simply bringing more to the court than the other one.
So, congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers for a well-earned victory tonight and in this series. And congratulations to the Orlando Magic for a fantastic season in which they exceeded everyone's expectations. It's been one heck of a season, and although it ended with a disappointing loss, no one can take away the Magic's overall achievements. As always, keep it tuned to 3QC throughout the summer for comprehensive Magic coverage.

I'm just going to say one thing.
The Magic should not change a single thing about this team, if that is at all possible. I know a lot of teams overreact to a Finals loss, make trades, alter their philosophies. I don’t feel we saw a single thing that needs to be changed here. This was a team that played all three of the best teams in the league (aside from themselves) — and went 2-1.
Yes, we didn’t win the finals, but we very easily could have. The series hinged on a few lucky bounces, none of which went our way. And as much as we can second-guess momentary decisions (bringing back Nelson for the finals, playing Redick in game 2, etc.), I don’t think we saw anything in the big picture that was a problem, or anything that could prevent us from winning it all in the future.
Of course, there are going to be SOME changes. I still say we’re retaining Hedo, but we’ll need to figure out what to do with the backup center position, how to balance salaries, etc. etc.
I’m sure Dwight will be spending the summer diversifying his offensive game.
Nelson will be back. We’ll either trade Alston or figure out how to fit him into that backup role.
Lee will be firmly built into the rotation from the beginning, and another year older.
And so on, and so on. But all these details aside, I want this team back next year. I want to see them make another run at it, at full strength this time… because I think if they keep running this team out there, one of these days, they’re going through.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Agreed... Experience only makes you better
There is absolutely no reason to panic after this loss. This team outperformed expectations (from fans, maybe not from inside the team). Los Angeles exposed some of Orlando’s weaknesses as a team and as individual players. But I did not think the Lakers did anything that shows a fatal flaw with the team. It is going to take a good summer of individual improvement from Howard, Lewis and Nelson to get this team back to the Finals and celebrating a title.
This is a good team. The experience they got this year (as little as coaches and players want to use it) will help them next season.

Orlando hurt themselves.
Missed free throws, turnovers, etc. In simplistic terms, that’s how the Magic lost the Finals.

Yeah, Orlando doesn't need to change anything.
Just tweak some things here & there and move on.

Congrats to the Magic for a great season
Though last night’s game totally sucked….I wish it hadn’t ended that poorly. A competitive game would have been appreciated, even if it was a loss.
"Oh, get a job? Just get a job? Why don't I strap on my job helmet, and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off into job land, where jobs grow on jobbies!"
I thought it was similar to how the Cavs went out
So much energy expended throughout the playoffs, or in the Cavs case really that series, that when the end came around, they were just flat because that’s all they had left.

Magic just gave up.
I caught the second half and the effort wasn’t there .. the players knew it was over and mailed it in.

Orlando should be proud of what it accomplished this season.
Seriously .. I know losing the NBA Finals hurts, but this was a hell of a year.

Good Job
As a Laker Fan I would like to congratulate Orlando for their very strong effort. While I believe that it took more than a couple of Lucky bounces for the Championship to switch hands, I also believe that the Magic was the best team in the Eastern Conference.
I would not have chosen any other team to face the Lakers other than the team that eliminates the 2008 Champs and the “Best” Regular Season Team in the League.
I also want to congratulate the Magic fans. You guys are class acts and you have shown what real fans are.
Just want to point out
I didn’t mean “a couple lucky bounces” in a way which was derogatory toward the Lakers, who played a great series. There were five games, of which three could have gone either way, and the Lakers definitively won the other two. They certainly deserved the title. No offense intened!
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Quick comment about the game,
Otis did pretty good job building the Magic, but his biggest mistake in his GM life came back to haunt him, and the Magic. Ariza was the key I thought. I was surprised that it took Hedo that long to get frustrated and that long for Ariza to actually make some steals, with the way he was hugging Hedo all series.
Unfortunately, Magic hit a 3pt shooting slump. For the whole series. I thought the difference between LA and Magic last night was LA making the open 3s, and Magic missing them. The guards never stepped up. I thought the one single turning point in last night’s game was not the 16-0 run, but in the first qtr i think, when Magic bricking two open 3pters in one possesion (that woulda put them up double digits), then Kobe stormed back and drains a 3. 6pt swing that killed any early momentum the Magic had. That’s the Kobe killer instinct thing people talk about.
The Ariza thing isn't a big deal.
That’s not why the Magic won or lost the series. Yeah, Trevor was a factor .. but I mean, let’s be real.

Now with that out of the way,
Let me just say that although Magic didnt’ win it all, this has been a very good season, the best yet. Not only did Magic defy most critics and went deep into the playoffs, but I also found a great site in TQC with a terrific community. So glad I found a place to read and post about basketball without having to wade thru pages of dimwit posts on people calling games, and names.
So thanks Ben and Ed for a great site, and thanks to all TQC’ers for being wonderful fans. Let’s hope Otis takes care of business in the offseason, Howard learns some moves, Jameer gets his groove back, and Magic goes all the way next year.
No doubt, man.
It was a fun season .. this is isn’t the end for 3QC. Ben and I have plenty of things on tap for the off-season. I’m sure the site traffic will dip a little bit but there will be plenty of Magic news the next coming months.

Ok JJ you win...
This is a random topic to pick from last night, but until I can reflect more I just wanna say this:
From way back (I’m talking Duke days) I’ve been one of those that just ragged on JJ mercilessly just because it was easy and fun. But one of the stories of the playoffs this year has gotta be JJ’s effort. Started in Philly. Blossomed in Boston. Out of his hands in Cleveland. Still despite all of that stubbornly I wasn’t 100% won over.
After last night I’m in your corner, Redick. JJ just wouldn’t die. One of the few or only bright spots for me at the end of the game. I gotta hand it to him.
It’s invaluable to have someone who is just READY. With weird minutes, unpredictable playing time, to not be moody about it, to just be ready to go with maximum effort no matter what.
I can’t believe I just wrote all that. Now of course this means he will be traded this summer.

He's a professional.
.. I know he’s easy to make fun of, but Redick works his butt off.

The guy has been through a lot this season
Kudos to him for the way he handle it all. I’m no longer down on J.J. Come to think about it, I’m really not down on anybody on this team. It was a great bunch of guys who all came into their own in some way this year. Heck, even J-Rich hit the 3 pointer that broke the league record for team 3’s in a game.
And shoot, Mike Wilks even . . . um . . . er . . . had prayer meetings with Dwight? Maybe?
Even though the Hippopotamus lacks a stinger for a tail, a truly wise man would rather be sat on by a bee. ~ Banacek
Absolutely -- the last few months have been huge for JJ.
…though I’m not sure he really has a place on this team. I mean, the guy has earned regular minutes somewhere in this league. And between Lee and Pietrus, I’m not sure he’s going to get those minutes in Orlando.
Well, until Pietrus gets hurt, which we all know is going to happen at some point. Still.
Yeah, and we broke your damn shot clock too.
Laker fan passing by
Congrats to the Magic and its fans. Agree with pcnyc. You may not have won it, but you over-achieved this season. Props to Ben and e for a great site. Classy fans here too.
To Marie, don’t mind Purple’s rants (Game 3 thread, If I’m not mistaken). He’s just like DSK, very sensitive when losing. Do keep on posting at SS & R.
Stay classy folks.
Sensitive when losing?
No, sensitive when Laker Trolls come by here talking. Over-achieved this season? Naw. We knew all season we were a better team than Boston and Cleveland and we proved that in the playoffs.

That's why DJ Bento loves coming here.
Just to get your goat. You’re better than that. Don’t mind it.
Peace. Not in me to “troll” around.

She'd come around here talking crap when the Lakers were winning
but suddenly would disappear when they were losing, back and forth, back and forth. Just like her fandom in the 90s, disappeared until they started winning rings, became a fan again and the disappeared again until they made the playoffs and looked like a serious contender. Nothing you can do about those wagon riders.

Wait, what?
Did someone say something bad about me? I thought I was civil over at SS&R, and the piece Timbo and I did was all in good fun.
:(
"Oh, get a job? Just get a job? Why don't I strap on my job helmet, and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off into job land, where jobs grow on jobbies!"
Good for you that you forgot already
It was not between you and Timbo, it was between you and Purple..
Anyway, liked reading your posts at the SS & R.
I honestly don't remember verbally sparring with anyone
I might have to go over there now to take a look…
"Oh, get a job? Just get a job? Why don't I strap on my job helmet, and squeeze down into a job cannon and fire off into job land, where jobs grow on jobbies!"
Well, you didn't
It was his reply to your post that made me wince a bit. That’s in the Game 3 post game thread, I think.
But its a small matter. If you don;t remember, then it’s nothing.
Great Season
thank you Ben, E, and most importantly the ORLANDO MAGIC.
Oh, and as we say where I’m from:
I see you Dwight, tryin’ to be all better, I see you. I know you. All talkin’ to Bill Russel, all tellin’ people you haven’t reached you potential. I see you. Make everyone else too.
You're welcome.
It was a pleasure covering the season .. big ups to the community for supporting the team and the site.

Very sad we lost on our home court
The Lakers were the better team so congrats to them. I’m still a proud Magic fan and look forward to a great off season.

+1
It’s hard to be dissatisfied with this season; the fact that we made it to the Finals without Jameer is a huge accomplishment.

Nobody took more hits than the Magic this year.

the real magic fans
I’ve always been a Lakers fan but I enjoy visiting 3QC the most because of the decent and intelligent posts here. I hope the other blogs follow suit. Name-calling doesn’t really contribute to the cause of real sportsmanship. I really appreciate your removing that despicable post with the photo of Kobe being clotheslined by another player. I thought it was a cheap attempt to promote hatred for opposing players. I’m glad those things have no place here. Keep up the good work!
Our Lakers may have won but the Magic definitely deserved to be in the Finals. This experience should teach them a lot in the future. Congratulations!
I do hope though you get to keep Turkoglu. He’s really developed into an impact player. Rashard Lewis should develop more moves and not rely on the 3-pointers.
Rashard doesn't just rely on his 3 point shot.
Unfortunately he was matched up against a 7 footer named Gasol. You just saw him in this series but he can do other things like post up, drive, etc. Your team definitely deserved to win and the Magic will be back. They fought hard and got nosed out at the wire a couple of times and wish it could have played out different but the Lakers deserve all the credit..The Magic had the best year in their history and I’m sure they did learn a lot from this series. Look for them in the future.
The Surfdog
Yeah, Lewis can mix it up offensively.
.. he just takes what the defense gives him.
