Same, but

itd be nice to know about Nick Young some more. I dont know much of him and the numbers look good. And how much is expiring from the other contract?
But prolly still a no.

Nick Young is a nice, young player .. but the trade is pointless, from the Magic's perspective.

It’s a lateral move that doesn’t make much sense.

Yea i had a feeling it wasnt the greatest offer for you guys

I originally wanted to swap 1st rounders but realized you guys lacked one so im thinking if we threw in our second which is essentially a late 1st. And Mike James has a bigger contract in terms of money than petrius so you guys would save money doing this deal to possibly use to resign gorat or hedo

by gilbachi on Jun 13, 2009 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

but why would we want this deal

For arguments sake lets just consider Pietrus and young a wash. Mike James can be good occasionally but PG isnt a need for us. Its been 3 years and we still dont know what the heck we’re gonna do with Redick.

Why dont we just keep the guys we know instead of moving laterally.

one trade

Ariza for Brian Cook and Maurice Evans. At the time, a lateral movement trade. Now?

Not everything is black and white.

by tandur on Jun 14, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

That wasn't a lateral move, at that time.

Evans came in to start at the 2. Cook was needed for depth with the bigs.

Ariza, at that time, was playing behind Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis. There weren’t much minutes for him and his inability, at that time, to shoot 3’s hurt his playing time. At that time.

Sometimes tipping the cap to a player getting better is the necessary move

Although, that’s not much of a consolation at the moment.

Yep. Pretty much.

Ariza improved. Good for him.

And maybe the trade kinda motivated him to start working on the 3pt shooting.

so who knows, if he got stuck behind Hedo he might not be the player he is today.

Yup

It also helped (in the long term obviously) that he broke his foot and the entire team was humiliated in the Finals. I’m guessing that made it much easier spending the summer in the gym. Also, Kobe apparently wrote him a manual on how to shoot, which can’t hurt. Here’s the article:

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/bryant-ariza-gasol-2464110-lakers-jackson

Makes me wonder if a coaching job really is in the future for Kobe after he retires.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the injury ..

.. that, sort of, forced Ariza to work on his shooting. It paid off.

Eh, it didn't force him to.

Some players I know would use the injury as an excuse to take an early vacation cough Shaq cough, but yeah it definitely gave him alot of spare time on his hands.

by Worthy J. on Jun 16, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Hah.

That’s why I said, sort of. I know that he had the inner motivation and will to go out there and work on his game. Novel concept.

Given that the Magic have indicated it will pay the luxury tax ..

.. the team doesn’t need to move someone like Pietrus to re-sign Turkoglu.

Yeah, this deal makes little sense

We’d be going backwards in terms of actual players, all for a second round gamble (to use on who?)

We might trade you JJ combined with Battie, Alston or AJ but Pietrus isn’t going anywhere.

My sentiments, exactly.

How About Blatche?

Trade Pietrus for Blatche and a scrub. That would give us the power forward we are looking for and we could move Hedo to the bench. I wouldn’t suggest putting Turk at the 2, but its just a thought.

Move Hedo to the bench?

That’s a stupid idea. Sorry for being harsh.

I wonder how many playoff games a season we’d need to average to be able to afford a $10m sixth man.

Trade is not needed

Magic would not do this deal maybe if Javaris Crittenton was in the deal since he and Howard are friends and high school teammates. But its still unlikely since Pietrus has a deal that is very nice and cheap. Plus the Magic have 4 point guards no need to do this. Though I could see them trading Reddick if wanting to.

by gatoralex911 on Jun 14, 2009 7:02 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't consider Pietrus cheap.

.. more like a bargain, given he’s making $5.3 million.

Until I saw what he did vs LeBron

I did think he was overpaid. But, now, I think he’s the cost of building a championship team.

Yea, but what about Antawn Jamison?

Id like some people’s input on that. He could fit very nicely with the Magic at the 4, Lewis at the 3, so Turk is likey one of which to go and see what Wiz fans think from there. I dont think Id do it, but it sounds intriguing and Jamison seems like a fit, eh?

by derekk on Jun 14, 2009 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

that’s not happening. jamison has a huge contract btw.

13 points in 39 seconds. Enough said.

I’m sorry, dude, no way in hell this trade happens.

Not sure.

You have to figure Gilbert will stick around, given that the Wizards want to play things out with its team.

I dont think they do tho..

They been shopping Butler and Jamison I think. And im guessing theyd might shop Arenas because he has the biggest injury history and paycheck. They’re too close to luxury I think as is. Too much money tied on a team not in the playoffs last yr, they might want to dump one of their big 3 for flexibility and youth.

Trust me. The Wizards are trying to win, ASAP.

.. that’s why the team hired Flip Saunders, etc.

I like Butler

Would be a nice Hedo replacement if someone offers him an absolutely stupid contract. I wonder if the Wizards would take Alston and Battie?

Well

the only way I see Orlando doing this is if they were extremely high on Nick Young. Don’t get me wrong, I see alot of potential in him (every time he plays the Lakers he seems to drop 20) but Pietrus is the more athletic, more proven player. It’s one of those trades where if the player suddenly blossoms its a franchise changing move but it’s 95% more likely to just be dumb. Besides, Orlando already has a similar player in Courtney Lee who might not be as offensively gifted but is a much better overall player.

And again, this is coming from a guy who really, really likes Nick Young (I see flashes of Kobe in him I tell you!).
