The Straw That Broke The Camel's Back?

Time and again, the Orlando Magic have been able to come back from adversity and overcome nearly insurmountable odds throughout the playoffs. I liken the Magic to a boxing prizefighter that fights back when its back is against the ropes.

"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." It's a quote from Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III and that comment best describes Orlando.

In my opinion, of course.

Just when you thought the Magic were down and out, the team pulled themselves back in. Every time. Literally, every time in the postseason. We all know the story. But it appears Orlando, barring the miraculous, may be down and out. People will say the Magic gave Game 4 away. Thing is, the Los Angeles Lakers had to take it from 'em. You have to believe Orlando will fight back the rest of the series. You expect it. That's been the team's calling card all year. But alas, it may not be enough.

As you can see,  the mood at Third Quarter Collapse is somber, today. No game recap. No morning after post. No words to describe last night's loss. Sometimes the best words are no words, at all.

In any case, if you like to analyze and elaborate about the game, feel free to do so in this post. Civilly, as always. Or, make your way to the bevy of excellent FanPosts that have been posted by the community, today. Some good discussion going on.

Thanks, everyone.

I don't even know how you would break this game down.

22-37.

Everything else is secondary to that. All the second guessing about lineups, defensive schemes, turnovers, etc. It all takes a back seat to 59% team FT shooting. This was even more maddening than the Game 5 loss to Boston…there’s no excuse for losing this game at the free throw line.

No excuse at all.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Well......

The four game winning shots against the magic the previous rounds had desensitized me to soul crushing defeats or they built up my tolerance for what happened last night. I didn’t have the anger to yell and throw sh!t around like i’d usually do. Just kinda sat numb.

I guess it wouldn’t suck as much if they played to their potential and got beat straight up by a better team. But we gave away 2 games, and that’s what stings.

Well if it makes you feel better

If the Lakers had shot better FT in game 3, then the Lakers might have won that one.

All games have been excruciatingly close. A team that turns the ball over that much can’t win a championship and be considered that great. Besides game 1, all games this seris have had no clear winner.

We CAN win this... but do we DESERVE?

Of course we do, and it’s not all on Howard; he did so much… Turk ALSO missed THREE free throws late in the game, ANYONE of which would have won the game for the Magic. He ALSO gave all his heart…

And WHERE was Rashard Lewis…?

AND WHY was Nelson kept in the game, just when we needed Alston’s spark and drives inside…?

Questions never answered…

And of course, the REFS ALSO impacted the game by missing the unforgivable foul in the mouth of Nelson by Kobe, again giving fuel to the charge that Superstars get preferential treatment. That foul gave Fisher open room to shoot his game-deciding 3-point shot. Kobe and Fisher were smiling wide… I was raving MAD!!!

But in all truth, we lost plain and simple because we MISSED just too many free throws and easy lay-ups. We needed just ONE free throw; ONE LOUSY FREE THROW!

Near misses don’t win Championships: When the going gets tough; it’s the Lakers who get going and deliver. The Magic NEED this Championship and have fought hard for it; The Lakers may DESERVE it… SO DO WE!!!

But I’ll tell the Lakers ONE thing: NOT in OUR home court!

The Magic have a chance to make history

…they can become the only team ever to overcome a three games to one deficit in the Finals.

I know it will be very difficult; I’m just trying to put a positive spin on things :-)

look at the bright side

at least your team makes the playoffs let alone the finals! some of us get to the playoffs once in every … oh … say 12 years or so …

Good to see Pietrus doing what he never had the opportunity to do as a Warrior.

I actually think though, the mistake Orlando made was bringing back Nelson for the finals. I think they should have kept the same lineup that got them to the finals. Chemistry on a team is something that can’t be understated, and integrating someone who hasn’t been around the last 4 months back into play — at what is probably the most intensive pressure times a team can be going through — the NBA finals, has all kinds of underlying effects. And this is the point spot — not the center. This is the guy that sets up the play. I dunno .. I just have a feeling it wouldn’t be a 3-1 series if they would have kept Nelson out till next season.

I really wish Orlando would have won that last one, but as soon as it went into overtime, I knew it wasn’t going to happen. I don’t know what the stats are but the Lakers always seem to win in overtime, at least the games I’ve watched with them in it. I’d still love it if Orlando found a way to win the next 3 (we northern Californians have little love for the Lakers), but even if they don’t, watching Orlando in the playoffs this year has been alot of fun for us fans from playoff-absent teams.
