He's Back: Courtney Lee Will Play for the Orlando Magic in Game 3 Against the Boston Celtics

Exciting news from the Orlando Sentinel after today's shootaround:

Magic shooting guard Courtney Lee is expected to play tonight in Game 3 against the Boston Celtics, said Coach Stan Van Gundy.

[....]

"Without Rafer [Alston], it was an easy decision to throw him into the rotation," Van Gundy said.

The AP report says Lee will play, but will not start.

It's hard to predict how Lee will play after missing more than a week to have surgery for, and subsequently recover from, a fractured sinus. He'll have to adjust to playing while wearing a protective mask, something other players--Antonio McDyess and Wally Szczerbiak come immediately to mind--struggle with. And although Mickael Pietrus and J.J. Redick have filled in admirably for Lee in his absence, the Magic desperately need his perimeter defense. Additionally, Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis haven't been able to get it together on offense, so perhaps Lee's ability to drive and finish will draw defenders away from the three-point line.

Bottom line: Lee's return can only help the team.

Good news for the Magic

Bad news for the Celtics. I think Lee will be an important factor in this game, so I just hope that the Celtics will defend well on him and not overlook him because he comes back from a surgery.

Anyway I can’t wait to watch game 3 , I think it will be a close one. Let’s go Celtics and good luck to the Magic!

Yeah, Lee is going to be huge tonight. His mere presence is going to help Orlando.

.. tonight’s a big game for both teams. Good luck to the C’s.

Yes

He’s been an immense addition. I think he could end up being the best player in his draft class. His ceiling is very high.

Best player in the draft class? That's a bit much ..

.. Lee is going to be a player in the NBA, but not the best amongst his peers.

Don't be surprised if he does play some point.

Thinking about it more and more, I have the inclination that Lee is going to back up Johnson tonight.

Lee has played some point in college ..

.. and he played a little bit of point during the regular season this year.

I think Courtney is more than capable of playing the 1 in spurts here and there, whenever applicable. I’ve been one of the more vocal proponents of having him start at point guard before the Rafer Alston trade happened. All he needs is a bit more PT at the position and I think you could see Lee handle more PG duties over time.

Don't be surprised to JJ guarding Rondo at times either.

With him and clee on the court at the same time, Lee would better serve us guarding Ray or that guy that killed us for 31 (I won’t say his name). Give JJ more credit, he will be able to draw a lot of charges on R2. He leads with his shoulder alot and J2 should be able to get in front of at least 2 of them. With him in foul trouble, we can attack them more in the backcourt. Can’t wait for the R2J2 matchup (o.k. so my Star Wars R2D2 reference didn’t go over so well).
Go Magic!!!

J.J. has been admirable defensively but he would get eaten alive by Rajon.

.. Rondo is just too athletic and quick for Redick.

Who seaid anything about the whole game?

I said just to get a couple fouls on him. If we can get him in early foul trouble and frustrated, totally different game.

I hear what you're saying .. I'm just stating it'd be a bad idea, overall.
