After wrapping up their last two playoff series on the road, the Orlando Magic will try to end this one on their home floor. They have an excellent opportunity to close out the Cleveland Cavaliers now, rather than Monday evening in Cleveland. Will they make the most of it? Or are we due for yet another game in what's proven to be a classic series?
I can't say for sure. Nobody can. Just sit back and enjoy it.

We have weirdly good luck with Javie
He was also the head official for Game 6 against Philly. If Javie, Davis, or Foster are officiating, we’re undefeated this season.

Just give us unbiased officiating and the Magic win this game, however, despite being home, LBJ will continue to get all the calls. If the Magic want to go to the Finals they need to put this game out of the refs hands, it’s sad that has to be done, but it’s true.

I just dont see
Orlando winning this game. There is no way its going to happen – even if the magic completely outplay the Cavs. Im not mr consipiracy, but wow.. Even jordan got more fouls called on him that Lebron.. How many games has Howard fouled out or been in foul trouble in this series as compared to the regular season? How many of them were ACTUAL fouls? What about in the game that Lebron hit ‘the shot’? There were like 4 fouls that were not called – not including the T on mo williams. How many ESPN specials are there on James? I just watched the magic/cavs preview on espn, and the magic were BARELY mentioned.. it was basically a ‘SO, how is cleveland going to win this game?’ then right after that, they had 30 minutes of lebron james coverage and how he is a saviour in Cleveland. They had the 24 vs 23 show.. It really is a foregone conclusion. If the magic win, they are going to have to absolutely blow them out of the water tonight.
You know, it might as well just be the Cavs playing against themselves, since most fans dont even know if they are playing anyone. If howard fouls out of this game on a bogus call – I am going to quit watching basketball altogether – since I dont watch WWE either.

In Tallahassee for my cousins high school graduation, no been a little busy. Super nervous about this game, if only because I think Lebron is going to get EVERY call. I know were the better team, but its just hard to imagine Lebron not getting a game 7. Best of luck to everyone, I’m silently confident.

Effort
Effort is what’s going to win this game for the Magic. Good aggressive defense and fighting for offensive boards. At no point in the game can the Magic slow down. The energy level has to go “up! up! not down!”
We know what the refs are going to do. We need the Magic win convincingly.

Magic WIN
Sorry to spoil the angst, but the magic are going to win tonight. We were up 3-1 with the refs favoring the cavs incredibly heavily, especially by calling it as they were Against Dwight. Game 3 dwight was in weird foul trouble. Hedo has been in weird foul trouble early. so has rashard im pretty sure. so.. bottom line, we win, even with he bias. reason being that crucial calls that can go either way almost universally favoring one team, combined with absolute terrible calls and terrible non-calls, doesn’t matter when both teams have nothing to lose and are playing for broke. The cavs are going to have to break the magic to beat them. Even with the refs, it won’t work. People that are persecuted have even more to prove and work even harder. what does delonte west and mo williams have besides the fear of letting lebron down and the desire to win a championship. the underdog has the whole weight of the world bearing down on them, and they are playing to literally put that shit in everyone’s face. a black president, a dead goliath james, and magic win. simple, delusional, beautiful. exactly the kind of mind needed to beat a cleveland team that really thinks it can win three straight against the best team in the league against them. yea right.
Don't put it past Cleveland to do the near impossible.
In any case, yeah, Orlando needs to take care of business tonight.

i dont put it past the cavs. i put it in the hands of our guys. you really think with all Rashard has been through this year, with how much it would mean to legitimize dwight, with hedos pending free agency, with rafer playing for his future, that these guys are going to let this be their legacy?

…with an over/under of 193.
If the Cavs can outshoot the Magic from the field, the free throw line, and the three point line tonight like they did in Game 5, then they deserve to win. I just don’t see them doing that two games in a row, or LeBron’s supporting cast playing as well either.
The home crowd should provide a huge emotional lift for the Magic!

I think “fat Oden” is probably the strongest guy in the league, with Dwight second and LeBron third. Oden held LeBron to the ground on a pretty hard foul earlier in the year… Once he loses the weight and gets back down to what he should be at, I think Dwight is the strongest in the league. About 10 mins ago I was going to say I would be shocked if Dwight wasn't going to score 40
But, with the way Cleveland has been defending him, they won’t allow him to put shots up when he goes a certain way. Right now he’s beating double teams. This Dwight is a gimme franchise player. Maybe more valuable than Bron, but I don’t know. But, this Dwight closes that gap certainly.

The Cavaliers offense is a joke.
If Mike Brown leads the Cavs to anything in the southern 50 win range, and doesn’t make it back to the ECF, he’s going to lose his job.
And that will seal Cleveland’s fate on the “Will he stay, will he go” story.
I don't think James hogs the ball.
A) he gets a lot of assists — 7 apg for a non-PG is practically unheard of.
B) he really is the best option on his team — I don’t think he takes shots when there’s a better choice, but there frequently really isn’t a better choice.
C) unlike Kobe/the Lakers (at times), I can’t really point to a Cavs player who should be doing more on the offensive end. All of those guys are doing about what they’re capable of.

I knew LeBron’s assist totals were remarkable for a forward, but it’s just occurred to me… he gets those assists on one of the slowest-paced teams in one of the NBA’s slowest-paced eras. Can you imagine what he’d be capable of on a team like the Showtime Lakers? I understand he’s not Magic, but…
…this may be the first thing I’ve thought of that actually makes me want to see LeBron go to the Knicks. (Though to be fair, I’d rather see D’Antoni go to the Cavs, though of course that’s not an option…)

But can Howard really guard two players down low? (Forget about Bynum, I’m talking about Odom).
Remember, the Lakers are the best passing team in the league. You need two hands to name all of the players the Lakers can use at point guard or point forward.

…Alston? I feel it is… not that I want him to become the focus of the offense, but when we beat the Lakers during the regular season, our superiority at the point was a huge part of that. Got to get right through Derek Fisher and them… it’s one of the Lakers’ biggest weaknesses. And the other is perimeter D.
That’s my big worry — I still feel we match up well vs. the Lakers. We’ve got Lee and Pietrus to throw at Kobe, and Lewis is going to be a huge issue for them — they’re going to have a lot of trouble playing Bynum and Gasol together. And if they toss Odom out at the 4, who’s going to guard Turk? Ariza? Big mismatch there. (Plus, is Odom still as ineffective on D as he used to be? Aside from Kobe and Ariza, I don’t think of any of the Lakers as an above-average man defender. Am I wrong?)
But we need to figure out exactly how Rafer is going to work in this series, and Rafer needs to carry out that plan. We need to gain ground at the 1, because the ground is there for the taking. I really wish Jameer was around…

Alston and Lewis
Alston is key, he scares me. He can do what Aaron Brooks did, and he’s got a better outside shot than the man who replaced him in Houston.
Lewis is also dangerous, his points per possession will beat out Gasol’s when those two matchup (neither can guard the other). But Odom I feel can both guard Lewis, and beat him routinely in the post (gotta watch out for Howard on the help side block tho Lamar!!!!)
Lee, compared to Artest and Battier, is gonna be nothing for Kobe to worry about. Pietrus, on the other hand, has length and speed, and could be an issue, but I have faith in Kobe to devise a strategy to beat him. He always does.
As for Ariza guarding Hedo being a big advantage for Orlando? C’mon. Ariza just held Melo is relative check for majority of the series, gave Artest fits, and even helped shut down Lebron in our meetings. Ariza is not Bruce Bowen or Raja Bell great, but he’s good. (And btw, Odom has played maybe… 5 or 6 minutes TOTAL this whole season at SF. It’s not likely to happen much, if at all, in the Finals).
Another issue is Bynum. He’s trouble. I actually, right now, prefer him being a bench player in this upcoming series. But at the same time, that forces a Gasol/Howard matchup, and while Gasol won’t make as many mistakes, and can still get his points… I worry about fouls on Pau.

Ariza is good
But he’s not a perimeter guy. He can’t make the outside shot, and guys who can’t make the outside shot frequently have trouble defending the outside shot. (I could be wrong — maybe Ariza is great at defending the 3. I don’t have the stats in front of me. But he strikes me as more of a physical defender than a skill one.) Plus there’s the height thing.
As for Lewis, I wouldn’t be so sure he can’t guard Gasol. Lewis has actually developed into quite a good post defender over the last couple years. Now, part of that may be due to being able to shift guys over toward Howard… but still, I think a lot of people underrate Lewis’ D.
As for Kobe/Lee, Lee is faster than Artest or Battier. (So is Pietrus.) He’s not as refined a defender as them, and he’s not as big, but he will be able to stay in front of Kobe a lot better. (I saw Kobe going around those Houston guys a lot.) And ultimately, that’s all you have to do — stay in front of Kobe. You don’t want to play him physical — especially if you’re foul-prone (Pietrus) or a rookie (Lee). You just want to make him make decisions.
I’m not saying Kobe’s a poor decision-maker all the time, but he does have a tendency to make mistakes when frustrated. It’s the one thing you can get out of Kobe — you’re not going to make him slow, you’re not going to take away his accuracy, but he can be made to make mistakes. You keep a body on him, and he has to make the shots. Which he will, a lot of the time — he’s Kobe. But when things are going wrong, he’ll also try a lot of stuff which is tougher than it needs to be, and he’ll also pass to guys who aren’t open. Not saying he can be stopped — but he can be messed with.

Starting-wise, I really think Orlando needs to exploit Fisher .. he’s been terrible for L.A. .. I’m talking, more so defensively, than offensively. Alston can sag off of him, etc.

I think Orlando has depth in the sense they have at least 6 or 7 guys capable of playing 35+ mins consistently
But, overall, I think the Lakers have more depth. Hmmm, that’s an interesting point. Fisher has not really performed at the same level this year, and it’s an important point that the Lakers may have to deal with. I wonder if PJ will sit him in favor of Farmar or even Vujacic. Or simply go big with Odom and Bryant doing all the ball handling.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens. The Cavs had a flawed roster, and maybe a head coach in Mike Brown who quite doesn’t have the same level of “something” that SVG has. But, PJ doesn’t fall in that category.
This series is going to be a dandy the way this Cleveland-Orlando series was.

great depth can also be a hinderance
case in point: the entire Lakers playoffs.
Only recently has Phil tightened the rotation, and even still, IMO, it’s not tight enough. With so many skilled players, it’s difficult for Jackson to come up with reasons not to play certain players, like Sasha, Farmar, Brown, Walton, and so on. Right now we are really guard heavy, but I can see times where Walton goes to PF to check Lewis if need be.
I grew up on the mantra of a 7-8 player rotation. Phil is currently using a 9 player rotation. It’s frustrating.

It’s been my contention, and still is, that he’s no better a three-point shooter than he was when he wasn’t shooting the three. Or not much better at any rate. It’s just that Jackson, unlike his other coaches, is allowing him to shoot it.
Not sure why. It’s a low-percentage shot for him.

He’s been lucky. Maybe he’s picked up his outside shooting a bit over the course of the season. Maybe he’s a 35% shooter. In which case, he won’t kill the Lakers.
But my point wasn’t so much about his shooting as a general speculation re: his perimeter defense. Even if he can shoot the three now, he hasn’t spent most of his career on the perimeter, and his physical gifts are more suited to stopping penetration than to defending the 3. That’s all.

On Lewis: Gasol is 7 feet tall. How tall is Lewis? 6’10"? 6’11"? And let’s not forget, Gasol can finish with both hands. K-Mart and the Birdman, while not great one on one defenders, could atleast challenge his shot, and they were mostly ineffectual, despite being known for shot blocking.
On Lee: Speed won’t help him. Kobe also didn’t get around Battier alot, he did that more against Artest, which has me believing Artest has definately lost a step (he looks way too big for his size now). Battier routinely was right in front of Bryant, putting a hand literally in his face.
Remember, Kobe lives off of jump shots. It’s the bread and butter of his game. So if Lee can stay in front of him, Kobe will pull up for 3’s, elbow jumpers, and fadeaways. And then there’s the height/weight problem. Kobe is an established post scorer. Can’t expect Lee to do much there.
Pietrus is gonna be key against Kobe. But even so, I question his mental fortitude. I’ve seen many a “could be” defenders that had the skill set to challenge him left on the wayside, and this guy, who I hadn’t heard of till late in the season, to do much. You say he’s foul prone, and as an experienced Magic observer, I’ll believe you. But Kobe against foul prone defenders is nothing but good news for LA. Expect long nights of Kobe at the line. And finally… nobody in the business makes more decisions, and the correct ones, than Kobe. Forcing him to think is NOT going to stop him.
The times when Kobe gets frustrated are mostly due to his teammates, when they don’t hit the open jumpers. These are the times when Kobe decides to try to win the game himself.
The best defense against LA is similar to the defense to play against the Cavs. Let Kobe/Lebron get theirs… but nobody else is allowed to get open. Kobe and Lebron are beasts, and while it scares alot of teams and coaches to let them go on streaks of 10-20+ points in a quarter/half, you have to do so, because they aren’t going to beat you by themselves. (Unless your the Dallas Mavericks or Toronto Raptors :))

I’ve never been impressed with Kobe’s decision-making. I feel he frequently tries too hard for shots (but is good enough to make a lot of them anyway), and I definitely feel his decision-making as a passer is a weakness. (Especially as regards other perimeter players — the guy seems to apply the same standards for what constitutes “open” to his teammates as he does to himself. Which works for him, but…)
As for Lewis, no, Lewis isn’t a shot-blocker. But he’s a better defender on the floor than either of the guys you mentioned, neither of whom is all that disciplined on D.

i don’t like his decision making when it comes to passing either, especially when he is trying to bail himself out before the clock expires. i would agree, by saying that it is probably his biggest weakness. he’s never been a good decision maker when it comes to passing under pressure. not always, of course, for his ability to draw double teams and find the open man is there.
I, and most everyone here, is familiar with Ariza .. given his time with Orlando.
He’ll hold his own against Turkoglu. Statistically, Trevor rated as an above-average this year.

does it win championships? the over analyzing of stats has yet to prove anything concrete, which is to mean that it can lead you to the Finals.
Lebron may have posted season PERs far surpassing the best of Jordan’s, but has Lebron won anything yet? It’s about rings baby, and that requires teamwork on the court, not geeks in the background crunching stats.

Trevor is good at...
intercepting weakside passes. His hands are quick, but he rarely gets a strip once in a 1on1 situation. He does sometimes get weakside blocks, or even from behind (once already beaten off the dribble). And as for bodying up players in the post, he’s a little thin for most SFs in the league, but he does have good size against some of the smaller ones.
All in all, Trevor is a little above average in total defense. (more so than say… slightly above average). He does some things good, others very well, and others average.
But the best part is… he’s still young, and has room to improve. He’s no Bruce Bowen or Raja Bell at their best, and I doubt he’d even come close to Kobe in his prime on defense.
Yeah, statistics have their flaws, which I'll happily admit.
That’s why I always say around here .. the best balance is using statistics with observation. Numbers can’t track everything down. There will be limitations.

.. intriguing that you didn’t address the other statistics I stated. If you’re going to criticize statistics, come with a better argument than the basic canned responses.
Statistics is nothing more than another edge more and more teams in the NBA are using. Dismissing that reality is the wrong mentality to have. It’s ignorant.
Want to know teams that have analytic departments? Boston, Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, Portland, San Antonio, etc. .. all franchises that made the playoffs this year (that’s no coincidence) and also, a few franchises that have won NBA Titles the past few years. There’s different ways of winning. This is the route more and more franchises are taking to gain an edge on the competition. Simple as that.

when shannon brown was put on billups, he stifled him. billups couldn’t do much. brown’s defense was they key to the game 5 turn around. if alston burns by fisher repeatedly, which he should be able to, then farmar and brown will guard him. i wouldn’t say the pg position is a weakness for the lakers. they have good depth. they’re all playing with confidence right now.
Brown concerns me the most.

when Kobe drives
he can drop it down low to avoid the Howard shot. Now Howard is quick enough to recover and block that shot, but after a pump fake, can he then recover to stop the next pass. Gasol is the best passing bigman in the league, and Odom ain’t too shabby himself. If you’re smart, encourage the pass to Bynum, and then swarm him. The kid is an offensive black hole. He never looks to pass out, repost, or do anything other than try to score, no matter the defense.
If Orlando wins...

Jameer Nelson is roughly 2,000,000,000,000 times the player Rafer Alston is, give or take. Not sure what you’ve been watching, but Nelson is all-NBA, Skip is a good dribbler who’s best quality is his ability to get out of the way on offense. If the Magic traded Nelson and kept Skip, it would be right up there for the dumbest move in NBA history.
Also, Alston is 34.
He’s a solid passer, a solid defender, and a deeply unreliable scorer. In short: the kind of guy who should be starting somewhere, but probably shouldn’t be starting for a contender. (Unless the contender’s actual point guard has suffered a season-ending injury. Another way of putting it: he’s the kind of starting point guard that a playoff-bound team trades away mid-season.)
I remain convinced that the Magic will trade Alston — because we need the cap room, and because there probably is some demand for him out there. But if not, he’s going to the bench.

It would be buzzkill. Orlando is not going to be able to get out of the luxury tax unless they don’t want to get back to the Finals.
On the other hand, they should have plenty of flexibility moving forward after that. Especially when you consider how Otis has drafted since coming to Orlando. Take out Vazquez, and the Magic are doing okay.

I realize he wouldn’t be the main figure in the reason why, but anytime a major starter is traded, released, or retires from a league champion, it’s gonna cause a ruckus. Trust me, the outcry will be alot louder from the pundits than if they traded Lee.

That isn’t the case at all. The outcry around the Magic community would be huge. I don’t think there is as nearly a great attachment to Rafer Alston as there is Courtney Lee. Oh, and Lee is about 4 million dollars cheaper next season too.

ESPN loves controversy. So I can fully expect a “PG Guard Controversy Brewing in Orlando?” headlines next year. And the pundits will make a big deal about it.
But no one, outside of Orlando, would care if Lee got traded. You guys might, but you’re a minority, and really… no one cares about Orlando. :) We only come there for Disney (unless you managed NOT to be brainwashed as a kid and stuck with Looney Toons! :))

the point about Lee getting traded wasn’t a suggestion that Lee would get traded. I know how much Orlando loves him, and there’s no reason to do so.
The point was about the national criticism for trading Alston, the starting PG for a championship run, versus trading Lee, who while being the starting SG for a championship team, was far less important in it’s success than Alston was.
Because I seriously believe, if Orlando wins this series, it’s going to be primarily due to Alston running circles around Fisher, Farmar, and Brown.
Who cares about national criticism?
National criticism said the Nuggets were dumb to trade away Marcus Camby to save money. How did that work out?

Alston isn't a major starter .. he's a replacement starter.
Otis Smith will do what’s best for the team and if that requires trading Rafer, so be it.
It would be completely idiotic for a.) the Magic to start Alston and Nelson together and b.) Orlando to trade Courtney Lee just to appease the point guard situation.

Congratulations, you guys earned every bit of this, and I’ll be pulling for you — as hard as I can possibly pull for a team that’s not mine — in the Finals. I’m sure any other Celtic fan with a brain and a heart will be doing the same.
The Lakers are nothing special. We were in this position last year, where every “expert” was picking the Lakers to beat us in 5 or 6. How’d that work out? You guys should be the favorites in this one and you’ve really grown a lot since Game 5 in Boston.
As a sidenote, I’m very heartened to see how well Howard played in this series, because that just makes me more proud of Kendrick Perkins for how he contained him in our series! Dwight is a great player and I think he’ll expose the Laker frontcourt big time.

what experts would that be? they’re all full of shit. i am a lakers fan and i knew boston would win the series. i actually picked them in 6. last season the lakers exceeded everyone’s expectations, including their own. they are a better team, albeit there’s no guaranteed they will beat orlando. that said, neither of these two finals teams are as good as they celtics were last year. the celts, were historically great. no one was going to beat them last year. if they had garnett this year, they would probably be back in the finals.

well magic fans shouldn’t heed celtics’ fans rhetoric and become overconfident against this lakers team. they are going to be a tougher opponent than cleveland. they are deep, talented, and more importantly, playing with a chip on their shoulder. the way kobe is playing right now, and the way he finally stepped up and has become a vocal, and very active leader during the games, is scary. he’s got that look in his eyes, that says there is no stopping him. he’s going out to silence everyone.

interesting how jr smith still claims the nuggets are the best team, a la mo williams. the two best teams will be representing the nba beginning june 4th. although the lakers will be favorites, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if the magic win the title. they are a great team. it’s anyone’s game. it’s a question of who wants it more and who executes the best.
