Where Skip To My Lou Happens
"It's been a challenge for me [...]. Philadelphia dared me to shoot it, and I burned them. Boston dared me to shoot it, and I burned them, too, at their place. This is a make-and-miss league. Right now I'm able to knock them down.'' - Rafer Alston

Most enjoyable Team to watch
I’m a Bobcats fan, but I’m definitely pulling for you guys to go all the way! Orlando, in my humble opinion, is the best team to watch.
Go stick it to the Chosen One! Stick it to the team “destined” to the Finals this year.
Alston really stepped up!
It’s great to see such a veteran step up, beyond his “confort” zone and rise to the occation. I guess he knows this is probably one of his last shots at a Championship.
It’s also inspiring because it shows that we ALL can reach ANY level of excellence, IF we put the goal in our minds and really WORK for it.
Congrats, Alston… and lets try for ONE more!
Question...
Why does it seem sooo hard to re-sign Gortat to a contract? I know about our struggle with Turk, but Gortat… come on!
Gortat makes about $700,000 right now; cheap by NBA standards. I KNOW he WANTS to stay, so… Can’t we sign him for 1.5 to 2,000,000? It’s STILL cheap, yet almost TRIPLES his salary. Don’t tell me we can’t afford THAT!
Please, clarify.
Gortat is going to net anywhere between half of the MLE to the full MLE.
Really depends on how free agency lines up for the main frontcourt players in the class.
The Magic will have enough to make a run at Turkoglu, right now. The salary crap and the luxury tax is going to lower a bit, which hurts Orlando because that tightens up money. Ownership will not go over the luxury tax, so the only way Gortat can be re-signed is if Otis Smith does some roster shuffling and is able to move someone like Alston (expiring contract/value is high) or Battie (expiring contract), that way there’s money allocated for Marcin. Doubt that will happen, but you never know .. it’s not an impossibility.
At this point, Gortat is as good as gone .. he’s priced himself out of Orlando.

He won't get the full...but unless someone thinks thats he can be their starter....
….and that would probably be a crappy team…i’d like to think we’d get a hometown discount…especially if we win it all..:)

It’s better for Gortat for him to leave and he can easily get the full. Don’t underestimate his value.

Don't get me wrong...i think he has starter potential....the guys got a great motor...
…but he’s far from polished offensively …..he would have to be developed more….personally i think he should sign a 3 year contract somewhere…hopefully here…then he’ll be 27…alot more polished…ready to get a killer deal in FA…people tend to forget…he plays mostly against other back up during the season….and most of his points are on put backs and dunks. He does shot well from the line though…remember this guy wasn’t even in the league 2 years ago…

The argument that ..
.. Gortat plays mostly backups doesn’t fly because he’s proven plenty of times he can put up double-doubles against anyone, regardless of the competition. No one is doubting his skill level. Marcin is NOT a good free-throw shooter (57.8% during the regular season).

…we can trade out of Lue’s contract to dump salary. Maybe find a home for Battie too. While on the topic….trade Turk and Pietrus while their hot for Raptors bosh who’s a no-brainer to be leaving. Raptors love Euros… Howard, Bosh, Lewis, Lee, Nelson for the next 5-8 years…yea i could live with that!!

I don't think it is just for the money
I’m all for Gortat staying with the Magic, but if he can sign with another team that guarantees him a lot more playing time, he has to take the opportunity. There’s no way he will be playing much behind Howard. He owes it to himself to figure out how good of a player he can be.

True....but i was thinking if we traded Turk/Pietrus for Bosh...
…we coulf just have Gortat back up both!!! That would give him 20-25min a game….believe me…i’m all for trading Battie’s $6.7 M and giving whatever we can to keep Gortat here and happy..:)

Interesting choices...so lets take a look at each...feel free to add more as we go...
Philadelphia…. already AT the salary cap even if the can’t sgin Andre Miller back at PG…if the don’t…i suspect the win make finding starting PG a priority….already paying Dalembert $10M+ for 2 more years…
Chicago….already paying Brad Miller…paying him $15M ..as a BACK UP! Already $5 OVER the salary cap next year BEFORE they try to resign Ben Gordon…
Sacremento… $5 M under next years cap..BEFORE the attempt to re-sign Bobby Jackson, Rashard McCants…and Ike Diogo….
Oklahoma….a bottomer feeder team with lots of potential that doesn’t(So Far) like to spents it’s money…probably your best choice so far…as they don’t have a quality starting center they’re paying millions too…….so even Gortat wanted to go and be a starter in OKC…it’s unlikely they would spend more than the Magic would to keep him on a championship calibre team…
…any one else??

The Magic can’t afford Gortat, at this present time.
Orlando “can’t trade out of Lue’s contract” .. it’s expiring. Battie will be tough to trade but it’s not an impossibility. Trade Turkoglu and Pietrus for Bosh? That trade would never happen .. ever.

Because Hedo is 30 and getting older. Pietrus is a fringe starter on the team.
.. for Mickael, he’s better off coming off the bench because he’s more effective.
Toronto can get much better trade offers for Bosh.
I'm the other guy at Third Quarter Collapse, with a Twitter account.
"Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgement." - Michael Corleone
Yes Hedo is 30...1 or 2 years past the NBA prime of 28 supposedly....but here's something apparently you don't know...
….this is Toronto where talking about….Not New York…not L.A, not even Chicago….as i lived there for most of my life before migrating to Orlando 23 years ago…..i can tell you that most NBA players…wouldn’t voluntarily go play there…As great a city as it is…it might as well me Milwaukee becuase it’s in Canada….all they have to do is ask Vince..i’m sure he won’t be shy about telling them. They won’t have the luxury of having free agent clamouring to go there to a bad team that just had it’s big star just had it’s franchise jump ship. The GM knows this…only way to get quality players is through sign and trade…and Bosh will be his big ticket….Hedo can start for most teams let alone a bad team like Toronto…and name someone on the current Raptors roster that would start over MP at SG for $5M that he’s making..? Kapono Joey Graham? Hey if it makes it more plausible…i would even be ok with them taking Gortat in a sign and trade….he’s so vaulable right After…the Raptors LOVE Euros…..probably 80% of Toronto’s population are immigrants of come sort…it would be great for attendance!!:)

It doesn't work
The salary cap is $55,680,000. Assuming we do a sign-and-trade with Pietrus and Turkoglu for Bosh, our lineup will be:
PG Jameer Nelson, Rafer Alston
SG Courtney Lee, JJ Redick
SF Rashard Lewis
PF Chris Bosh
C Dwight Howard, Tony Battie
We’ll be 4 players short of a minimum roster. We’ll also be $10,598,412 over the cap. Good luck signing four players for zero money.
"And this he knows if nothing more
That waiting in the dark like destiny

Sorry your numbers are wrong...
…i don’t know where you did your research , but using ESPN’s Trade Machine and substituting a simulated $10M for Hedo new contract he’ll want(i used Alston and Battie’s contracts to simulate this) , because we can’t trade Hedo till we resign him if he opts out. I agree we need to move Battie to do this deal but it’s far from impossible. Battie is a serviceable Vet and perhaps we can package him with someone of value such as Reddick( Reddick will never start in front of C. Lee) As for signing extras…like we did Gortat, Foyle, Richardson…the NBA CBA allows teams to complete their rosters regardless of the cap by signing players to the minimun contract adjusted for their years in the league…or as a few team have done this year…simply leave the spots 13-15 open and pay the rookie minimun towards the cap(aprox $400k) Oh…and you’re allowed to go over the salary cap to sign your own player, via trade as long as trading contracts are within 125% of each other either way plus $100k, AND to complete rosters at the NBA min. Any questions..?:)

I used the Trade Machine.
I didn’t even bother with simulating the trade. I looked at the Magic’s current total salary, subtracted all the free agents, and added Chris Bosh. Doing that, we have the eight players listed above and are $10 million over the cap. A team is required to have a minimum of 12 players. Good luck filling your bench with the dregs of the league.

Big men are hard to find, Gortat will get an offer based on what he might do not what he has done. But some teams that might try to pick him up would be:
Miami
Cavs
NY
The 3 teams you just mentioned have one HUGE thing in common....
…they will ALL be scratching nickels together for 2010 to make a big impact in free agency….Cleveland in an attempt to keep Lebron….Miami…in an attempt to lure him away…and New York in an attempt to lure one…or both together!!

"Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgement." - Michael Corleone
Thanks for the Gortat disertation...
I’m back! It’s good to have this many points of view on this question.
I don’t think Gortat will leave for Europe; he has said so himself.
And NY already has a Center; a GOOD one, who even matches Howards numbers. He would play second fiddle there too!
I still don’t see why Orlando could not play the twin towers option; San Antonio did it with BOTH Robinson AND Duncan and it worked pretty well for them. And one should NOT underestimate the appeal of playing for a Championship team; an elite team with youth at it’s side.
After all, we DO have some baggage to trade, with Batie, MP, Leu and even Johnson. Once Nelson is back, we won’t need another backup, other than Alston. Lee WILL develop into another All-Star in one or two years. We Do need a TRUE STRONG FORWARD, AND a STRONG, VERSATILE CENTER to play with/for Howard, depending on game situations. Gortat fits like a glove, plus he’s 24!
David Lee will be a restricted free agent for the Knicks. Given that New York is trying to save up as much money as possible for a 2010 free agent run, it would make economical sense to go after Gortat who will demand a cheaper price tag than Lee .. with the caveat that the productivity will be similar.
Orlando can’t play the twin towers option because it doesn’t work offensively. Gortat and Howard can’t co-exist offensively – spacing gets sacrificed and you’re eliminating a shooter from the perimeter. It’s not a smart strategy from an offensive perspective. Defensively, it’s fine, but that’s about it. It’s best for Gortat to leave and land with a team that will give him the minutes and money he deserves. That’s the reality.
Need a true strong forward? The Magic have one, his name is Hedo Turkoglu.
.. the team’s starting lineup is perfect and doesn’t need to be tweaked.
I'm the other guy at Third Quarter Collapse, with a Twitter account.
"Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgement." - Michael Corleone
Turk while very versitile...is hardly a "strong" forward...
..to say that makes your argument to keep this team together sound ridiculous. Granted we ‘ve had a good run with this lineup THIS year so far…and i hope it continues…but let’s get real for a second…Boston will be much better next year with a healthy KG….and we barely got by them this year without him. You’ve got blinders on if you think this teams in addition to playing very well hasn’t gotten some great breaks along the way. And Cleveland certainly isn’t going to stand pat considering what we have accomplished against them this year. We HAVE to trade Turk….and here’s why. As you’ve already stated…the guy is going on 30, if we resign him to a big contract like he’ll want…$10-12M, we’ll be stuck with the same weak front court around Dwight for the next 5 years that will just be getting older…thats if Dwight stays of course. Both Rashard and Hedo are SMALL forwards and Rahsard isn’t going anywhere as we know…and frankly he’s a much better shooter and much more consistent than Hedo…not to mention the fact that he’s playing out of position right now. We are constantly providing Dwight no help on the glass both offensively and defensively where we continually get out rebounded as a team despite the fact that we have the leagues leading rebounder!!! Hedo and Rashard only average 11.0 rebounds COMBINED during the regular season…that’s just UNACCEPTABLE…in the playoffs it’s even worse. Not to mention the fact that neither Turk or Lewis can box out worth a lick. Lewis playing out of position defensively on the post is a huge match up problem for us against real PF which causes us to have to use Howard to help and usually get needless fouls if we had someone who could guard PF’s one on one!. Need i go on..?? Well there’s more…Next year…Jameer will be back…and he’ll be back to being our good shooting…..low turnover play maker…making the best part of Hedo’s game redundant. Jameer is a much better 4th quarter closer than Hedo…..much less prone to taking ridiculous shot and throwing passes into the stands. I’m sure there are even more points why we should trade Hedo and Pietrus now while their playoff exposure it at a maximum as is their trade potential!! I’d love to here intelligent argument to the contrary…not one line reply like " wouldn’t work financially for the Magic .End of Story."!!

- I never stated Turk was a strong forward. I was repeating what a commenter said.
- Orlando barely got by Boston because the C’s were a matchup problem.
- Turkoglu isn’t going to net $10-$12 million .. not in this market.
- Weak front court .. right. The same weak front court that’s been punishing the Cavaliers.
- Lewis is at his best as a power forward, because he provides so many mismatches offensively. Defensively, Rashard can more than hold his own against opposing PF’s.
—>> defensive adjusted plus/minus: -1.08
—>> opponent PER: 14.2 vs. PF’s

Now perhaps that doesn’t sound dismissive to you but it does to me when no other facts or figures we’re offered which i would have gladly accepted by the way. If someone is going to be an “editor” here…i think we should have the right to expect researched truth and fact when they make statements or rebuttals…especially when they are flying the banner of objectivity. I would suggest instead of taking sides and picking favorite…you yourself come up with points or add to the discussion intelligently if you can…because that’s all i have done. Statements were made…i perceived those statements as completely incorrect and called that person to task…it shouldn’t matter whether he’s an editor owner, creator of first timer. To be honest…if he’s and editor or whatever…he should be more accountable…I would challenge any thinking mind in here to prove my statements wrong or his correct…i will gladly accept that, but don’t sit there and threaten with censorship until you’ve proven that my argument incorrect. I aslo found it strange that you would hit ME with the “stay open to new stuff” as if i was the one who uttered “End of story.”

but if someone needs to end the discussion with end of story, maybe the other side is too stubborn? and for me picking the favorite, yeah, between you and Eddy i have no doubt,no offense meant,of course. it’s just that i like to read his posts, and he writes short, correct, and hits the nail almost every time. so,i like his writing, ask anyone here for their opinion on the matter, they’ll tell you the same thing. now,i don’t have Eddy’s skills, time,or will to go into endless discussion here, especialy after this loss,so i’ll leave it here, although i already know the answer:)
Look..i don't have any problem with anyone replying with their opinion....
..as long as they can back it up with correct facts. But when someone starts spewing unfactual rhetoric back at me when i have in detail(and politely) explained my position on the matter and then has the gall to announce that all positions contrary to his are null and void…that’s a problem. thats hardly being open to new ideas as you’ve stated should happen here. Basically…if you can’t support your rebuttal with facts…don’t reply.
As for picking sides or playing favorites, that doesn’t really concern me…it’s human nature and i’m new here so i wouldn’t expect anything different to be honest. by the same token just because i’m new don’t expect me to defer just because someone has been here longer or has some kind of position with the blog, especially if i KNOW they are factually wrong and d am simply asking them to provide FACTS to backup their statements. It’s Journalism 101….but i wouldn’t know..i’m not the "journalist " in here.
All that B.S. aside….Magic WILL take Game 6 at home Saturday and send Lebron home for the summer!!! Any rebuttals??? Lol…i didn’t think so..:)

" Need a true strong forward? The Magic have one, his name is Hedo Turkoglu."
Yes you did say it…that you contend you didn’t is baffling and frankly disturbing….thanks for the numbers on Rashard….more evidence as to why the Magic should keep him and trade Hedo! As you can read above…my point was that we need to capitalize on Hedo’s current playoff value, so that we can get the most out of a player who is intent on ending his contract early to get a better deal. I say rather than locking in the mistake prone….ill-advised shooting Hedo ffor the next 5 or so years, thus handcuffing ourselves COMPLETELY in making our team better in that time and thus…in fact making it worse., that we maximize his trade value to get what anyone with any sense knows we needs to complete this team…A TRUE POWER FORWARD..ala..Bosh , Boozer , or Stoudamire. I’m sorry if my replying to your statements bother you…or in some way hurt your feeling i would apologize and politely suggest that if being OBJECTIVE here is your goal….do go making silly( and incorrect) statements like “wouldn’t work financially for the Magic. End of story.” Frankly…thats incredibly insulting and dismissive to anyone with any intelligence, and if that’s your idea of objective journalism i would suggest you go back to the drawing board!! Either that or just stick to you trademark “Thank for the kind words” and leave it to that.

Lebron won't be going to the Knicks if the don't resign David Lee...
…he’s their only top quality young player…it would be an idiotic message to send Lebron…“we are getting rid of everyone good…but we REALLY REALLY REALLY want you to come leave you’re 66 win team in your home state” ..lol

Thanks!
I guess you’re right… I only worry about the age factor, with BOTH Lewis AND Turk. I just don’t see them playing beyond two to three years; not at the elite level they now play. It would be nice to have a STRONG supporting cast around Howard, for a good six to eight years… maybe it’s asking too much…
Anyway… do ANY of you guys EVER sleep; it’s 2:30 AM! LOL!!!
Have fun!
Just let things play out.

I agree comepletely...
…..Lewis is overmatched defensively on PF while playing out of position…the wear and tear probably affects his wonderful offensive game too. If we resign Hedo we will be stuck with the same under athletic same forwards for the next 5 years because Hedo next contract will restrict the team from signing any good FA (non -MLE) after him. This is our chance while him and Peitrus are playing as good as the can!! I’m just praying poor MP doesn’t get hurt AGAIN during the playoffs!! lol

Oh and for ERivera....it doesn't have to be Bosh....he's the prefered choice obviously...
…i would gladly sign and trade Hedo, Pietrus,, AND Marcin for Bosh, Boozer , or Stoudamire( If the Suns are insistent on dumping salary) , though i do have major concerns regarding how successful his recovery from eye surgery will be.

Good advice; will do.
Time to retire for now.
Will pick this up later….
Gortat is gone..
He is 7 feet, with good hands, and he can run. Players like that don’t hit free agency very often.
"No matter where you go, you are what you are playa"-Jay Z
It takes a little more than that to be a NBA starter...
…while i would never disagree Gortat has great potential….he is far from polished…no pun intended..:)

His per-minute stats would put him in the top 20 centers in the NBA easily
They’d probably decline a bit, but he was tied for 18th in PER among centers in the regular season. He may not be polished, but statistically he’s already better than Brad Miller, and just barely below Al Horford.
"And this he knows if nothing more
That waiting in the dark like destiny
Are those who kissed the dogs of war
And there is no tomorrow."
I would have to say that there is a big differnce in playing against starters and playing against bench players...
….yes i know he has started 3 WHOLE games…but i think even Holliger would tell you that the drop off from sub to starter could be a little more than slight.

Rebounding is rebounding, though, no matter the opponent
That’s why college players who rebound well tend to rebound well in the pros, even though in college they weren’t matched up with too many NBA players.
Marcin would average at least 10 boards per game if given starters’ minutes.
Right .. Gortat's rebounding rate in the regular season was practically equal to Howard's.
Gortat – total rebounding % (20.4)
Howard – total rebounding % (21.8)

I agree if anyone snaps him up for more money than us...it will be because of his rebounding...
…and not because of any offensive game he may or may not have..

He's not, like, a back-to-the-basket center or anything, but he at least has good hands, can finish in traffic, and doesn't need the ball in order to be effective
I would say he's like a Varejao...very active on the boards at both ends.

Gortat doesn't play against reserves his min.come against starters.
He fares well against all comers. I’d be curious how he fares against Dwight in practice.
