Dwight Howard referenced through his twitter that "the Magic need Orlando." At the time, Dwight was talking about how the Amway O-rena crowd needs to give the Magic all the energetic cheering and screaming they can handle, but when I read Dwights tweeting, I took something else away from it.
Dwight Howard is absolutely correct, the Magic do need all the support the O-rena crowd can give, but on the other end of the spectrum, Orlando needs the Magic.
There has never been a championship parade in this city. A quick look at the Donovan Index of Professional Sports Championships by City shows Magic fans what we already knew. Among major sports, there are no championships. Zero. None. The only teams Orlando sports fans have ever had to be excited about were the Solar Bears and the Predators, and neither one of those teams qualifies in the "Major Sports" category.
Everyone can use a little pick me up, and in times like these, most people would consider any day they receive a little pick me up the best day in a long time. As a kid I never believed in routing for teams from other Florida cities, like the Tampa Bay Bucs, or the Florida Marlins. Mostly because I inherited my favorite teams in the NFL and MLB from my Dad and his Dad and Orlando doesn't have a team for those other major sports. But, Orlando did have an NBA team.
So in a city where we have the Magical Kingdom, the movie magic from Universal Stuidos, and every other kind of magic this city can be branded with, sports in Orlando have been above ordinary at the most. Not magical. We are celebrating 20 years of Magic basketball this year, and true Magic fans have been waiting 20 years to see that magic come to life.
Yes Dwight, the Magic need Orlando, but right now, more than anything, Orlando needs the Magic. Because there isn't much magic anywhere else these days.
