If this were the regular season, J.J. would not be starting the next game. But he's been playing with the first group for the last six playoff games and Ray Allen hasn't really looked like Ray Allen against him, aside from that dagger of a 3-pointer in Game 5.
Don't think the Magic's coaching staff isn't holding their breath, wondering when Allen will go crazy, perhaps their greatest Game 7 fear. They know that Paul Pierce is going to be Paul Pierce.
Van Gundy likes how Redick helps move the ball early in games, and he likely won't break up that group to play Lee or Pietrus. Pietrus has been playing a lot of small forward, in relief of Turkoglu.
If things go South early in Game 7, he won't hesitate to call on Lee early to replace Redick. Pietrus could be a huge X factor again, shoring up the two-guard spot.

Thought the same thing last night...
If things go South early in Game 7, he won’t hesitate to call on Lee early to replace Redick.
However, SVG allowed the C’s to open up quite a large lead in the first quarter replacing J.J. with Lee. I fear, if the same happens in game 7, we won’t have the opportunity to turn it around.

.. relax. J.J. has done his job defensively against Ray Ray.
When push comes to shove, SVG is smart .. he knows what to do.

JJ & defense? I don't believe it.
I will say JJ has done better, not good, just better defensively but I still don’t think he’s doing enough on either end of the floor to be getting the minutes that he is getting. Ray Allen is just flat out struggling offensively and missing open shots or just shots he should be making so I’m not going to credit JJ with his “defense” & when SVG kept JJ in done the stretch in Game 5 and Ray Allen shot that 3 to give them the lead in the 4th, I actually wanted it to go in to prove a point. In this series we’re only using Lee for defensive reasons on House, when he has so much more potential and is out playing JJ with half the minutes. When JJ plays he looks panicked, scared and lost. He misses wide open lap ups, can’t make a shot, takes stupid shots, misses wide open shots and is running around franticly for dear life on defensive. SVG likes how JJ “moves the ball” he had no assists in Game 5 or 6 and went 0-4 in the 1st quarter in Game 6 and while Boston played with a comfortable lead the whole time Courtney sat on bench and didn’t come in until the last minute of the 1st when who else came in? Eddie House, imagine that. Although JJ & Lee’s minutes were even in game 6, Lee is coming in for like 4 min. at a time so it’s hard for him to get it going offensively especially when he averaged 40+ minutes in the first round so I can’t say I believe SVG. Lee should definitely play 30+ come game 7. I would rather see Pietrus starting if Lee isn’t going to.

Redick had 3 assists in Game 5.
At some point, perception is going to have to meet with reality. J.J. is not getting the credit he deserves on defense, and anyone that refuses to give him his due is ignoring the facts.
It’s a give and take, yeah .. Allen is missing some shots, but Redick is hounding him too defensively. Ray has gone from averaging 23.4 vs. Chicago to 11.5 vs. Orlando. Part of it is Ray missing some shots, yes, but J.J. is deserving of some credit too .. Redick being a step late when Allen made the shot in Game 5 is no different than Lee being a step late against House. Obviously the situations are different, but not the basic premises. That’s what I’m trying to say.
That’s part of the reason why J.J. is struggling a bit on offense, because his legs are a bit tired from chasing around Ray around the court on defense. That’s not an excuse, just an observation. Redick was fine in the beginning of the series because he was fresh; not so much now. Frantically running around for dear life on defense? Not really.
For the record, Lee played 33.4 minutes in the previous round.

JJ
having to play defense on Ray Allen has nothing to do with his offense, Boston has left JJ
wide open for a lot of his shots, or he at least has room and he still can’t make his shots. If he can’t handle playing both ends of the floor then he shouldn’t play. JJ is an offensive player, he always been that way & his two wide open lay ups last game he missed is because he’s so hesitant and is so unaggressive and that’s my main problem with him. Sure JJ is playing good defense for him but he’s not effective enough to playing as many minutes as he is. And he was way late coming off the screen on that Allen shot and I think anyone could’ve told you that was the play Boston was going to run and he should’ve been prepared, he let that shot go. Lee is right is House’s face to where he can’t even get a shot up so I can’t say he would have been late on that shot because of his speed. I give JJ minimal credit.

J.J. having to play defense doesn't have to do anything with his offense?
Redick has openly admitted that his legs are maybe tired from his efforts defensively.

i could see it.
His overall minutes have increased and chasing around a guy runs around screens is very exhausting. That is why most teams best perimeter defender isn’t there best scorer.
I am still not sold on JJ’s D, for two reasons, I have watched JJ Reddick get light up all season when he came in. Two, it is Ray Allen, he is guy who will disappear. He did it all the time in last years playoffs.

Redick isn't as bad on defense as people suspect.
During the regular season, just looking at the numbers and watching him play, I’d rate J.J. as an average defender (depending on the player, he’ll struggle at times)
.. though he’s picked it up in the playoffs.
http://www.82games.com/0809/08ORL5.HTM
A major reason why Redick has been able to hold his own against Allen is because Ray Ray isn’t a slasher .. Allen makes his living around the perimeter. That’s the key and something people overlook when thinking about J.J.’s job defensively.

Maybe it is...
but it shouldn’t. Everyone is running the floor, guys that are playing a lot more minutes than him are fine offensively and Courtney has a much tougher defensive job and he isn’t struggling offensively. The reason his legs are “tired” is because he is for once actually playing defense, sometime he’s not used to. I don’t think having to guard Ray Allen is an excuse for how poorly you’re shooting the ball, suck it up or don’t shoot the ball.

Allen > House.

Tell me you're kidding?
That is a joke. How can you even argue that? If that were true Lee would be guarding Allen and JJ on House, Lee is our best perimeter defender which is why he’s guading House who is so much faster than Ray Allen and can shoot off screens way better than Allen or create is own shot anywhere on the floor, House is instant offense and more consistent than Ray Allen. Eddie House is the reason Courtney isn’t starting because he has to guard their fastest and as of now best shooter.

that's a bold argument
there’s a reason Ray Allen is an all star and House is a role player.

Not in this series..
I mean Ray Allen is a great shooter. But some of the shots House makes are incredible and with his speed and quick release he is harder to guard than Allen, especially in this series. Lee always guards the opponets best shooter so I think there is a reason he’s on House because if JJ was on House this series would have been over.

Allen's definitely tougher than House
But House is quicker. JJ’s just good enough to keep Allen mostly covered. House can burn him. Lee’s got more quickness than JJ, so he can cover House. It’s a matter of adequately covering the underperforming star and smothering House, rather than covering Allen and letting House snipe from the perimeter at will.

Yeah, I mean ..
.. House is the main bench threat for the Celtics. It makes more sense to put your best perimeter defender on him to shut him down and put the pressure on the Boston starters to carry the entire workload for the team.

We don't depend on JJ's offense
In this series, his defense has become more valuable. Call me crazy but this is an easy call for me.

J.J.'s Shot isn't falling but...
in Game 5 he led the team with 7 assists. He is staying in the flow of the offense, he moves the ball well and makes good decisions with his passes. He is keeping the offense moving besides keeping Ray in check. His shot will fall.

100% agree with you
Lee is the better scorer but JJ moves the ball very well. It’s addictive too, everyone seems to make the extra pass when JJ is on the floor. I can’t explain it, but it is what it is.

Part of the reason
That Allen is missing open looks is because he’s had JJ up his butt so often this series he’s feeling ghosts even when JJ loses him.
And JJ can’t guard House, so Lee has to take him. Which doesn’t mean Lee can’t get playing time when House is out too, but if Lee starts then when House comes in he’s tired from chasing Allen around.

No, I don't think that at all.
I’ve said countless times that I’d like for C. Lee to start but J.J. is doing his job. Again, all this Redick talk would be a moot point if the team executed and finished the job in Game 4 and 5.

No. Looking at defensive efficiency, JJ and CLee were equal for the season as a whole
Although Lee improved more during the season, so he’s now a better defender. JJ really isn’t that bad a defender. While he doesn’t get blocks or steals, he does get in a shooter’s face, and his lack of quickness is less critical when Dwight’s roaming the paint. That lack of quickness is why JJ shouldn’t guard House – he’s a smaller, faster SG than Walter Ray Allen. JJ would have a tougher time reacting to get in House’s face.

If by defensive efficiency, you mean DRtg .. throw that number out ..
.. because it’s a terrible metric to base how good or bad a player is defensively. The problem with DRtg is that it’s too heavily-team based, and doesn’t encapsulate a player’s contribution. Though, I don’t think you’re referring to DRtg since Lee was better than Redick in that dept.
Still a bad metric to use, in any case. It’s better to look at defensive adj. plus/minus, opponent PER, defensive net plus/minus, eFG% allowed to paint a picture of a player defensively.
The numbers actually favor Redick, but one has to take into account the floor time he saw during the regular season against opposing bench players and use pure observation. Lee was in the same situation to start the year, but then he moved into the starting lineup and began facing off against, a good number of times, an opposing team’s best scorer. So ..
