So about that goaltending...

Pretty sure it was in the second quarter (I'm on a business trip, so I couldn't DVR the replay.)...  Pietrus took the hit on his way to the hoop and Rondo got a good leap for what looked like a block, in addition to the foul.  Replay indicated that the ball touched glass before Rajon trapped it.  The goaltend was not called, and Pietrus missed both free throws.

Had it been called, arguably, the Magic would have won the game.  A day or two after the NBA botched a late game foul call for the Mavs, this looks pretty ugly to me.  Just sayin...

Ehh it certainly sucks

mistakes like that are pretty common though and its a lot tougher in real time to call a bang-bang play like that.

Overall Boston played a very good game, we did not, and if it wasn’t for their 5th scoring option on the court on that last play, we would have won.

Obviously there is a big difference between 3-1 and 2-2, but considering that we couldnt buy a shot and they shot over 50%, there’s still reason to stay confident.

Just for accuracy's sake...the final numbers:

Boston: 53% from the floor, Orlando 40%

Alston, Redick and Turkoglu combined: 6-28 (2-15 from deep), 18 pts

…and we still lost by one on a last-second shot. Regardless of home court, you gotta think those numbers return a closer to normal for the next game. This is in no way a nightmare scenario…we just gotta regroup and keep playing our game.

P.S. – Was I seeing things or did we actually go to Dwight in the 4th quarter??

Like I said in the game thread, can't be picky about the calls.

If you do that, then an argument can be made for both sides for other calls and it’d never end.

Pietrus made one of the two throws.

If the goal tend was called however, the Magic would have ultimately won by one point. Or the Celtics would have had to gone for a three and forced overtime. As the playoffs continue, it’s becoming clearer and clearer that the NBA wants a Boston/Cleveland ECF, at all costs, it’s really leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

heh, which basically means Cleveland/LA finals,

since Orlando is the only team that stands a chance against LeBrons right now. They can’t afford the Magic to spoil it.

It's funny, after the Magic went up 2-1, deadspin's headline was, "Orlando is trying to ruin everything"

Everybody is aware, (even joke sports-related websites) that the NBA wants to set up a CLE/BOS rematch en route to CLE/LA finals.

i just don't want to believe that.

i mean, what’s next? will they be giving positions in the divisions based on the ratings and size of the markets and fanbazes? so there’ll be no need to play the season at all….
let them just fill the tables in,and that’s it.

If they could they would. You don't want to believe it?

Look up the story of Tim Donaghy. Although I’m not insinuating this is the case in this series, the NBA (more so than any other sport) surely has a black eye when it comes to all types of officiating controversies.

The officials didn't potentially cost the Magic the series.

.. that’s on Orlando, end of story.

But when it comes to officiating, the NBA has the worst problem.

No, I'm not saying that they cost the Magic the series.

Agreed, NBA has it worse than any other sport. Baseball Umps and Football Refs miss calls, but I think the NBA officiating has especially a black eye in regards to officiating, and in particular, big games.

Don't forget the Price-Wolfers study

The one that found that refs (regardless of race) called things against players of other races more than against players of their own race.

There are also a lot of statistical…oddities in the playoffs. In 2007 & 2008, there were 25 series that went at least 5 games. When the home team was up 3-1, the visiting team shot 1.1% better. When the series was tied or the visitors were up 3-1, the home team shot 5.4% higher.
In Game 6, if the home team was behind in the series, they were called for 4.1 fewer fouls than the home team.
Game 7? No statistical oddities (foul differential of less than 1 between home and visitors). It suggests (but certainly doesn’t prove) that the NBA has attempted to stretch out playoff series whenever possible.

There’s also a Price/Remer/Stone paper that was published in March out of Oregon State (the three are from BYU, OSU, and Johns Hopkins) that finds statistical evidence of homecourt bias, refs attempting to keep games close, and playoff series extension, although they also say it doesn’t appear to be economically tied, and may be an unconscious bias on the part of the officials:
“Each type of favoritism results in approximately a 5-10% advantage in discretionary turnovers, and the first two types of bias (favoritism of home teams and teams losing during games) results in an approximate 2-5% advantage in shooting fouls.”

And this was the reason for the thread.

Beieve me, I’m not a ticky tack, complain about everything fan. I just want an honest game. I’d prefer if they didn’t suspend thse guys at all, but just found some way to punish them monetarily or through shaming them or ANYTHING else but suspending them from a playoff game. I’d prefer that they add another ref who does nothing but watch replays, and judges whether he has a better angle (or if you’re worried about him throwing games, has another ref behind him judging whether he’s got a better angle) and makes the call. You know what, now that I’m thinking about it…

I’d like the NBA to have a ref parked behind the replay, just to wave the white flag when he thinks the call is bad. Don’t give him the authority to make the call, just to wave the flag if he thinks it is bad, and get the other refs to come look at it.

I just want an honest game.

The suggestion of suspending the players next season makes sense.

How about Foyel's block .

Replay showed it was good and taken away. Key part of the game.

Hah.

.. again, can’t cherry pick every play. If we did that, we’d be here all night deciphering every call.

E come on man

there was also when Rondo tripped on his own accord, Dwight not even touching him in the first half and got two free throws.

That’s five points man:

1 block that wasn’t a goaltend (2 points)
1 goaltend that was called a foul (1 out of 2 free throws)
Rondo tripping on his own and making two free throws.

I understand the whole “no excuses” thing but we definitely had more bad calls than they did. And all three above are inarguable. All replays showed the refs got it wrong.

I'm sure arguments could be made on the other side of the ball.

I sympathize with your points because they’re valid, but it goes both ways.

I PROPOSE A DUEL!! =D

I know the Boston fans will go wild over this.

After game 5, we point out all the bad calls we see, and they point out all the bad calls they see. ALL THE BAD ONES from both sides. Let’s see how many match up, and get a better look at how the other side lives.

by farfromfl on May 12, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Rondo tripped over his own feet and draw fouls on two different occasions if I remember correctly.

Not to mention, various flops throughout the series, insta-calls when Rondo flops.

The other one looked to me like Perkins hip-checked Alston into Rondo

If it’s the incident I’m thinking of

Hey guys

Just wanted to say that this has been a great series so far and think your team has a lot to be excited about no matter how this series ends. Although I wouldn’t mind if these games would stop comming down to the wire, the first round was stressfull enough.
As a Celtic fan it’s been dramatic to say the least this year and I believe next ear is going to be very exciting. I know the Finals havn’t had its final shot, but if you think of Boston, Orlando and Cleveland, the east is going to be a warzone nest season. Anyway, if you do happen to put us away, PLEASE beat the queen. Don’t let the rule book wreaker get his ring yet!!!
