Player Comparison #10

Tony Battie has had an interesting season, to say the least. After sitting out last season with a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder (thanks to Dwight Howard, surprised?), Battie was expected to be the primary big man coming off the bench for the Orlando Magic this season. While that was the case at the beginning of the year, things changed as Marcin Gortat flourished as a reserve. Now, Battie's role has diminished & evolved for Orlando and unfortunately as a result, he's become an overpaid bench player on a team that can't afford to be inefficient with its funds.

Regardless, Battie has been a decent contributor this season and his presence has allowed the Magic to carry a healthy stock of bigs for the entire year. But, as always, it's time to play a game.

Below I present two players.

Player A:

Season A -

TS% (45.5%)

eFG% (43.4%)

Total Rebound % (12.3%)

Block % (2.7%)

Offensive Rating (103)

Player B:

Season B -

TS% (51.8%)

eFG% (49.2%)

Total Rebound % (13.0%)

Block % (1.5%)

Offensive Rating (106)

One of these two players is indeed Demetrius Antonio Battie.

The other player, however, can not be named. It can be stated that this individual, like Battie, shares a similar skill set. Likewise, both players took similar home-grown paths to the NBA.

Star-divide

Horace Grant:

1998 - 1999 Season -

TS% (45.5%)

eFG% (43.4%)

Total Rebound % (12.3%)

Block % (2.7%)

Offensive Rating (103)

Tony Battie:

2008-2009 Season -

TS% (51.8%)

eFG% (49.2%)

Total Rebound % (13.0%)

Block % (1.5%)

Offensive Rating (106)

If you guessed Grant as the connection to Battie, congratulations, you have won the game.

But if you didn't, be lucky that the penalty isn't impending death.

Until next time.

Ah, close. That's not a bad guess, at all.

I did consider using Bo Outlaw as part of the comparison but I didn’t want to use him twice.

Nah .. every once in a while I do player comparisons.

I just pit an old Magic player with a current Magic player and see how they stack up against each other.
