Magic Lack a Go-To-Scorer
I posted this over at RealGM and I figured it would be suitable for a blog post over here, so here it is. I hope it inspires some wild debate as a conversation with our very own erivera7 inspired it.
http://www.3hoopsfans.com/2009/04/the-weapons-that-make-a-player-clutch/
This article brings up the idea that a go-to-scorer will excel in crunch in three quantifiable categories; True Shooting %, Assist rate, and Free Throw rate. The bench marks as the article states them are thus;
Scores Efficiently (.550+ TS%)
Can Draw Fouls (7.0+ FTA/48)
Can Pass (>20% for wing players, >15% for centers)
Having a player that is skilled in these three areas hypothetically provides that team with an edge in close games, and therefore and edge in the playoffs. The article notes that while in the 80's and 90's there were typically only 2-3 in any given season, this year we have several. They are LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Brandon Roy, Devin Harris, Paul Pierce, Manu Ginobili, Time Duncan.
Not a single Magic man. I wanted to take a moment though to look real quick at our foursome and see exactly where these players fall short.
Dwight Howard
TS% = .606 >
FTA/48 = 14.57 >
AST% = 7.3 <
Dwight dominates in two out of three categories. However it is in his passing that he struggles. We have seen improvement in this area throughout the year, and with teams having to double team him, he will find the open guy for the assist if he can develop that comfort level and awareness. An improvment here will impact the offense 2 fold, as not only will it result in increased scoring chances for his teammates but it will also cut down on his turnovers when the hard double comes.
Rashard Lewis
TS% = .582 >
FTA/48 = 4.62 <
AST% = 12.6 <
Rashard is an efficient scorer but lacks the aggressiveness and court vision of a go-to-scorer. I personally think he would be a more effective creator out of the post than on the wing, as it seems putting the ball on the floor limits his mobility and slows down his reaction time. Also, as his game is more finesse than brutish his post moves and finishes tend to avoid contact rather than instigate it, limiting his trips to the strip.
Hedo Turkoglu
TS% = .537 <
FTA/48 = 6.557 <
AST% = 22.3 >
Hedo comes very, very close. His shooting is down from last year, where he was far above .550 TS% bench mark. What it comes down too is that Hedo doesn't get to the line enough, but even in that he comes close. Truth be told I've felt all year that on his drives he was getting fouled but not getting the respect of the whistle. Also, and this is anecdotal, but it seems that Hedo doesn't really turn it on till the 4th quarter anyway, thus his numbers don't quite show his true value as a go-to-scorer.
Jameer Nelson
TS% = .612 >
FTA/48 = 3.54 <
AST% = 31.9 >
This is salt in the wounds for those of us who have put the injury behind us, but Nelson really was having an All Star year. The only area that he lacks is in getting to the line, but with his quickness and ability to penetrate I think he could improve that area. Maybe his lack of height will forever keep him from being an effective contact finisher, but the jury is still out on that.
All in all I'd say we have a very well rounded foursome, with both Nelson and Howard having room to grow. Going into this post season Hedo will be our closest thing to a go-to-scorer, so if we are going to win the grind it out fights that many post season games turn into it will be on his shoulders. He is much more valuable than some people may be willing to admit.

I concur
somewhere there has to be that “cut-throat” player we need in the clutch to create plays for others and for themselves. But who? (Not Mike Jones)

.. like I said below, I think it’s Hedo. We’ve seen countless times Turkoglu take over games in the fourth quarter. I don’t think it’s cut-throat by nature, but more a player imposing his will in crunch time.

If I had to pick a guy as the "go-to scorer" .. it'd be Hedo.
Eyriq, you’re correct in assessing that Turkoglu doesn’t ‘turn it on’ until the fourth quarter (when it matters the most). I think if we were to concentrate on Turk’s numbers in the final frame, he may fit the “go-to guy” profile, statistically. When I have the time, I’ll go ahead and do that .. then post the results here.
.. and I’d like to think that most Magic fans don’t underestimate Hedo’s value to the team. Even though he’s having an average year statistically, can’t deny the intangibles Turkoglu brings to the table. Sometimes it’s more than just the numbers.

Yup
I’ll be interested to see what you come up with, I reckon he is close. With the combination of having so many guys that come close to filling that “closer” role, and having Dwight who is an anti-closer so to say, that the Magic are still one of the best “closing” teams out there. Heck, just ask Paul Pierce how easy it is to win a game on the last play against Dwight! lol.

If you were to concentrate on the fourth quarter alone ..
.. Hedo falls short of the criteria because he isn’t efficient enough from the field.

He gets it done getting to the line and passing the ball, though.

What about Lewis?
Nobody is mentioning him yet he has definitely made some big shots for the magic this year. His #’s are good. Had an all-star year. Has ice in the veins.

Lewis shoots efficiently and gets to the line, but doesn't pass it enough.
I like to make a correction on my previous comment. Hedo falls short of the criteria because he isn’t efficient enough from the field AND he doesn’t pass the ball enough.
For what it’s worth, Jameer Nelson DOES fit the criteria as a “go-to player”.
This is all within the realm of the fourth quarter, as a reminder.

Hedo isn't efficient enough in the 4th. quarter?
That’s when he does his most damage hence Mr.4th. Quarter.
The Surfdog
You can score and not be efficient (i.e. Allen Iverson).

I know that but..
that’s when it seems like he is the most efficient. I’d be curious to see the #’s on that.
The Surfdog
Who, Hedo?
http://www.82games.com/0809/QTR4S11.HTM
If you scroll down a bit, you’ll see Turkoglu. He can score, no doubt, but again .. not really at much of an efficient rate.
http://www.82games.com/0809/08ORL10.HTM
Here’s some more .. scroll down and when you get the ‘Clutch Statistics’, note Turk’s eFG% .. it’s poor.
For the season, Hedo’s eFG% is 47.8% (a teeny below-average) and TS% is 54.1% (average).

Hard to be clutch when he's sitting on the bench in street clothes .. *sigh*

Hedo
Has the most potential to be that player because he can create his own shot.
It should be Dwight, he shots the best field goal % and he is the most athletic Center in the league.
Interested to see how C. Lee develops.

If Dwight could make his foul shots he
would be the best option at crunch time. Hedo i think fills the roll pretty well. On the Barkley show they pictured Dwight and Hedo in the promo of Dominators in the league. It’s about the one 2 punch.
The Surfdog
Dwight needs to work onhis passing too

The bigger problem is perimeter penetrator
I honestly have never been worried about who is going to take the last shot in a game. It is going to be Hedo Turkoglu or Jameer Nelson.
The bigger question for this team (this year, and maybe even next year) is who can create offensively when Dwight Howard is not getting touches. The team has struggled in this sense, especially since Nelson went down.
I think Nelson can be that guy. But the team has really struggled this year when Howard is not going really well (and I am not just talking about scoring). The Magic need to find a way to create without Howard to be very successful this postseason. The Celtics will be able to take Howard out of more than a few games (hopefully Dwight proves me wrong).
Philip
Hedo can create for himself. Ditto with Jameer, when he's healthy.
Both are adept and willing to get into the lane to cause some havoc. The Magic have struggled doing so in crunch time since Nelson has been gone because opposing defenses know only Turkoglu poses such a threat. I think Rafer Alston could do himself and the team a favor by penetrating more, because right now, he doesn’t do it enough. I agree with your area of concern, though. It’s a valid point.

You can see with Rafer he defintely has the ability
to penetrate and when he does good things happen. I agree he should do that more. When he first got here he was doing that .. Now he pulls up for the jump shot alot. I like him though i think he plays hard.
