Open Letter to NBA
Hey Guys,
Long time reader, but this actually was too much to not comment on. Im not one for Media, but the media and ratings are driving the NBA to crap...I sent this letter to the League office, i think like 5 different divisions..
This recent Rondo Non Suspension and Howard suspension is utter blashemy on how the NBA favors Celtics and/or Star Guards in the league..The sheer fact is the NBA is a joke and doesnt compare to the NFL. Quite simply, Stern and Jackson simply want ratings, and it is most evident in these two instances. Rajon Rondo prevented a inevitable chicago win with a hit one that, quite frankly, teddy bruski would have been penalized for in the NFL. Yet, surely, at the very least, a technical foul, allowing ben gordon a free throw, as well as Brad Miller the opportunity to regain his senses and shoot his free throws to earn the win. But no..Even after the fact, No flagrant, no nothing, not even a slap on the wrist flagarant one! But Dwight Howard, who is one of the most easy going players in the NBA, manages to get suspended from a pivotal game 6. How about the rake to the eyes, or the fould in the neck area that Theo Ratliff has issued through the series. The playoffs is not about where amazing happens, its about where Ratings Happen. Maybe Howard does deserve a suspension for his retaliation, but this is no league for Big Men anymore, the media and the league has pampered the likes of Lebron and Wade, so that if you as much as breathe in their direction, it is a foul. Let alone a big man that gets fouled clearly on nearly every play. Mr. Stern has disgraced a good product that Magic, Bird, and Jordan built. Avid NBA fans like myself cherish the days of the Bad Boys, and the grueling series that the Knicks/Heat/Bulls/Pacers used to play. the league is a laughing stock, and i thought someone should bring it to your attention. I havent even yet to talk about Donaghy, but the league needs altering, and it all starts at the top. Resign Mr. Stern, youre league is getting soft..
Yours Truly,
A Disgruntled Sports Fan

Not a single sentiment that I do not agree with.
Well put.

"Rajon Rondo prevented a inevitable chicago win"
THAT is worth disagreeing with. Uhm, if you read Pelton’s article, or say I dunno, watched the game you would have known that it really would’ve given CHI a 75% chance of tying, and ultimately a 50/50 shot of winning the game. The foul was freaking ridiculous, and he should have gotten a T, but it wasn’t an ‘inevitable win’…not by a long shot.
The rest of this is good though, I vehemently agree.
Well, yeah .. the odds say Chicago could have tied the game if a flagrant was handed down.
.. but there’s no guarantee that the Bulls would have tied the game, first and foremost.

Right, I'm agreeing with you. Probably should have just said 'agreed.' Whoops.

Well said.
And to add to your point about ratings:
The NBA wants Boston to advance. Their series against the Bulls is one of the most highly publicized playoff series I’ve seen/heard/read about the past 5 years. Boston will likely advance to the next round, where they will play either Orlando or Phili. Not having Dwight for a game obviously increases Phili’s chances to win game 6.
If Phili goes on to win the series, Boston would then play the 76ers. The Celtics would, presumably, have a much easier time against the 76ers then the Magic. If the Celtics were to advance to the conference finals, it will probably be the Cavs vs. Celtics – a dream come true for the ratings obsessed NBA.
While the Magic have had their chances to win games they let slip away, and still could put away the series in game six or seven, I also doubt the league is oblivious to the ramifications of potential match-ups.
On a side note, would Dwight have been suspended if the incident received significantly less media coverage?

Someone else asked the same question and the only answer I could give is, "I really don't know" ..

Some additional points to add to the issue:

Rajon Rondo did not commit a flagrant foul against Brad Miller.
Says who? The NBA, that’s who.
Rondo
Rondo
The league office ruled Wednesday that the referees acted properly when they did not assess a flagrant foul against the Boston guard after he whacked Chicago’s Miller in the mouth with two seconds remaining in Game 5 of the Boston Celtics-Chicago Bulls series Tuesday night.
A league spokesman said the play “stands as called,” meaning there will be no further penalty against Rondo. League officials had the option of upgrading the foul to a flagrant — category 1 or a flagrant-category 2 — the latter of which occasionally can come with an accompanying suspension, if NBA officials deem the foul particularly egregious.
The blow from Rondo bloodied Miller’s lower lip, and Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro argued vehemently that a flagrant foul should have been called. But official Mark Wunderlich could be seen explaining to Del Negro that the referees believed Rondo was swiping at the ball.
“We felt Rondo was making a basketball play and going for the ball after a blown defensive assignment by the Celtics team,” Jackson said. “In terms of criteria we use to evaluate a flagrant foul penalty 1, generally we like to consider whether or not there was a wind-up, an appropriate level of impact, and a follow through. And on this foul, we did not see a wind-up, nor did he follow through, so for that reason we’re not going to upgrade this foul to a flagrant foul penalty 1. The initial play, in our mind, was on the ball — an effort to try and make an attempt on the ball and take a foul that would prohibit a game-tying basket.”
After a lengthy delay to treat Miller’s wound (his tooth pierced his lip, resulting in a laceration that later required stitches), Miller missed the first free throw, then committed a violation when his intentionally missed second foul shot did not hit the rim.
“Rondo didn’t come near the ball. He came right across his face. I agree that it is a hard playoff foul, but you still have to call it a flagrant and I’m sure that will be addressed,” Del Negro said afterward.
Had the play been ruled a flagrant foul, Chicago would have retained possession following Miller’s free throws.
Had the league reclassified the foul as a flagrant, it could have opened the door for the Bulls to file a protest — although Jackson said an on-the-floor judgment call by a referee, even one that might later be reversed, would not be sufficient grounds for a protest.
Bulls general manager John Paxson declined to comment on Jackson’s ruling.
If anyone is watching the Heat/Hawks game, you just saw Dwayne Wade make a clear play for the ball from behind (and actually made contact with the ball), never touched the opposing player’s head (Mo Evans), Evans momentarily held the rim and in combination with the lower body contact with Wade, made both players fall to the ground in a manner that looked much worse than it actually was, the crowd goes crazy, Mike Woodson runs out onto the floor, and after a short period of discussion amongst the officials, decided that Wade was going to get a Flagrant 1. I repeat, Wade was hit with a Flagrant 1 for typical foul, and Rondo, even after league review, gets nothing after punching another player in the face to the point that it drew blood and knocked loosed the opposing player’s tooth! The hypocrisy continues…
If the league doesn’t review this and reverse the call, what kind of outcry do you think fans of the Heat will have? Not that it will matter, because this play actually shifted the momentum of the game into the Hawks favor and now they are up double-digits after only being up 4 points before the play happened. Also, its curious that the officials felt it wasn’t necessary to review the play to ensure the right call was made. Its probably because they had just moments before, taken several minutes to review a play so they could dole out technical fouls for a minor skirmish. Oye!
My problem with the NBA is the lack of consistency with regards to refereeing.
.. but again, I don’t really want to talk about the officials because it takes away from the actual game.

wow.
nicely done, fellow basketball fan. and how about kg pushing a ref !? nothing happened back then, remember? and to punish a guy like dwight,i can’t believe that. i never liked celtics, but after this series,i almost hate them. they should gave up playoffs and let bulls advance, honestly! bulls are much much better team and all congrats go to them. keep fighting guys! and us… we will keep loving b-ball… even with stern and his companions… even if it is not even close to that league from the 80-90… that was a golden age..
hopefully it will be again like back then someday?
The only thing I can see
Is that they saw something in the Rondo foul that allowed them to interpret it as a basketball play. I don’t think they want to suspend big name guys in the later rounds of the playoffs, and I think if you give them the opportunity to interpret it as an honest error, they’ll give you the benefit of the doubt where possible.
But there was nothing about Howard’s elbow that gave them that option.
The interpretation was that Rondo was reacting during the play, etc.
.. as for Howard, he clearly was reacting after the play, which is a different story.

I disagree.
Rondo’s act was in desperation during the play.
Howard’s act was calculated after the play, with malicious intent, etc.

Seriously?
I don’t know how you guys can talk about this and not address the fact that Dwight’s elbow was after the play had stopped, in the middle of a game. Rondo’s foul was an act of desperation at the last second to prevent an open layup. If you’re going to talk about a double standard in terms of officiating, it seems to make a lot more sense to talk about context rather than the size of the player at hand. Everybody knows that late-game situations has a huge impact of officiating, and in my opinion, it should. I agree Rondo’s foul was a flagrant, but if you honestly think you can look at this and authoritatively conclude that there’s a conspiracy to get the Celtics playing the 76ers or something like that…I don’t even know what must be going on in your head.
I agree. There's no conspiracy .. just inconsistency.
Dwight Howard netted the punishment he deserved, which was a suspension. I pointed this out earlier today, but the Magic should be thankful that Howard was only out for Game 6. It could have been a lot worse had the referees seen Dwight elbow Samuel Dalembert right now .. it would have been an ejection for Howard AND a suspension, which means he would have been out for essentially two games.
Rondo should have netted a flagrant foul, but he didn’t. It’s in the past now. Time to move on.

Rondo clocked the guy in the head with a closed fist. That's every bit as malicious as Dwight's elbow.
The closed fist is what gets me. Nobody makes a play on the ball with a fist. He intentionally punched Miller and should have been issued a Flagrant 2.
Whatever, though.
Rondo gets yet ANOTHER pass from the league for his actions!
Rondo let off for Game 6 skirmish
NEW YORK — The NBA has decided not to take any additional action against Rajon Rondo for his skirmish with Kirk Hinrich in Game 6.
The league said Friday the first-quarter play would stand as a flagrant foul against Rondo. It could have upgraded the foul or even suspended the Celtics’ point guard for Game 7 of the series Saturday.
Chicago was leading 34-25 Thursday when Derrick Rose rebounded a missed 3-pointer by Boston’s Stephon Marbury with 30 seconds left. That’s when Rondo shoved Hinrich into the scorer’s table. Hinrich pushed him back and Rondo then threw an elbow that missed.
The league previously declined to further penalize Rondo for his foul on Brad Miller in the closing seconds of Game 5.
It’s absolutely ridiculous how hypocritical the NBA league officials are being right now.
Yeah, I just caught wind of the news.
