Antonio McDyess, Magic Power Forward In '09-'10?

Good morning, folks. Today is a big day for your Orlando Magic. Before we get into the proceedings later tonight for Game 5 (in which Ben Q. Rock will be at the game and covering the proceedings), time to showcase another fanpost. 3QC member magic12ball has the rundown on why the Magic should do its best to pursue a certain Detroit Pistons player that used to have Orlando's number in the regular season AND in the playoffs the past few years. - ER

According to the Detroit Free-Press:

If it was his last game as a Piston, Antonio McDyess, went out with guns blazing. With his team falling further and further behind, he kept hitting shots and grabbing rebounds.

The Cleveland Cavaliers finished their first-round sweep of the Pistons, 99-78, Sunday at the Palace, but McDyess left it all on the court as he tied a career playoff high with 26 points.

He added 10 rebounds, another part of the highlight tape teams around the league will watch when they decide whether to make a pitch for the unrestricted free agent.

"I just tried to leave everything I had out there," McDyess said. "With a loss or a win or however it came out, I just wanted to leave everything I had on the court."

When he signed with the Pistons after the team won the 2004 NBA title, he thought he was close to getting a championship ring.

But after five seasons, he is still looking for that ring, and with the Pistons in transition, he might decide to land with a championship contender. He likely will be in demand from teams that think he might be the missing piece to a championship.

And he admitted this dismal season could impact his decision this summer.

"It was a disappointing season for me and for everyone in this locker room," McDyess said. "It will probably play a role in what my decision is. At this point I just want to win and at least compete. This season just seems like a loss for us."

The Magic really need to get another big body inside to protect Howard and get rebounds on a nightly basis. Antonio is a desperate FA looking for a home with a true championship contender. When Nelson gets better next season, we will be that legit title contender. If we start the same 5 we currently do (Nelson/Lee/Turkoglu/Lewis/Howard) we could rest Hedo at the mid-way point of the 1st qtr. like we always do and bring in MyDyess to replace and move Lewis to the Small Forward spot. This would give us that PF that could rebound and help on post-defense that we need more of. I know he's a Piston but he has killed us in the past and we know what he can do on the defensive end, not to mention that he's a decent free-throw line extender jumpshooter. Also, the last big-man from DET who came here was Darko and he did well for us that one year.

Thoughts?

Orlando NEEDS a veteran power forward who is not afraid to bang around and be an enforcer for Howard. I would prefer someone with title experience, but McDyess would be perfect. Hopefully the price is right.

I love McDyess

Talk about heart…I know it’s sacrilege around these parts but I was originally a Piston fan before moving to O-town and they were still my #1 team until I started going to Magic games about 4 years ago. McDyess is a class act and like the article says, he leaves it all out there. I hope the Magic go for him.

.. unless GM Otis Smith trades Tony Battie to clear some payroll to re-sign Hedo Turkoglu and then use the remaining funds on Antonio McDyess (for the veteran’s minimum), I don’t see it happening.

I thought the same thing when I read that post earlier today

I absolutely detested when Mcdyess would kill us every time we played. Seemed like he never missed a jump shot, got every loose ball and played tough D on howard……….but i’d want him on my team any day.

why not try to land milsap…prob would cost us turk though

Boozer wouldn't be a good fit for Orlando.

He’s a terrible defender and doesn’t fit the “character” type of guy GM Otis Smith looks for. Millsap would be nice but as you alluded to, it’d cost Turk and that’s not a smart move when the Magic just need a veteran role player like McDyess to further bolster the bench a bit.

Iverson? Really?

We could, if we traded Battie to clear some payroll.

GM Otis Smith, more than likely, has to move a body to free up some money for Turkoglu. Depending on who he moves, enough money could be allotted to make a run at McDyess.

Battie is an overpaid bench player.

It makes absolutely no sense paying Tony roughly $6.2 million next year when the Magic can move him, sign McDyess to the veteran’s minimum, and get better production at a cheaper price. It’s all about cost-benefit for Orlando ..

Good idea...

I Actaully hate Mcdizzy because it drive me crazy when the Magic play Detriot. Everytime he take howard away from the basket and hits that stupid 15 footer i want to throw my shoe at the tv. The guy is lights out from mid-range. This is not even an issue. Trade the idiot HEDO and this can very easily happen. We need a 4-man who actaully plays inside and can grab some bourds and play tuff D. This would allow Lewis to play is natural small forward position which would allow him to shine.

One thing people arent thinking about but we should make a major priorty is keeping Gortat. We need him around to back up Dwight. Any thought on that?

I just found it today...

Guess what…i am a huge magic fan and HEDO is an idiot. That shot in the 4th was insanly stupid and careless. You have the most domintant center in the league on your team. Give him the ball stan. Why would you take a three anyway? Drive to the basket and get fouled. If he would have missed it we would have lost the game and everybody would be freaking out. I think he is terrible. He shoots entirely to much and is a stupid player. Get him out of Orlando

by LKMoreland on Apr 28, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree somewhat...

I agree that sometimes Hedo does take some ill-advised shots and tries to take over the offense when it is clear we need to get it inside to Dwight Howard. But I still think he is an integral part of the team and makes the offense work, freeing up space for both Howard and Rashard Lewis.

I would like to see him back in Orlando because it would mean less turnover and we would not have to start over with a new offensive system (having two 6-10 guys who can drive makes the Magic incredibly potent offensively). But throughout this series I have not been sure how I feel about Hedo. I am somewhat curious what would happen without him.

That is a question for Otis to answer, I guess.

I'm on the fence with Hedo, but I would welcome him back because as you said ..

.. it would limit roster turnover and it would provide continuity with the team. Turkoglu this year was average at best on offensive, statistically, but there are certain aspects of his game that can’t be tracked on a score sheet. He’s a 6’10’’ small forward that can handle the rock. There aren’t that many type of players in the NBA .. he’s a unique player. Sure, another player could step in and emulate his numbers, but maybe not his overall impact.

It would all depend on the player in question.

Let me get this straight...

Hedo, taking a shot he is comfortable with and has hit on multiple occasions is insanely stupid, yet your suggestion is to give the ball to the most dominant center in the league? The same dominant center that shoots FT’s at a 50% clip and would automatically be sent to the line to shoot 2 with time remaining on the clock? His percentage would indicate he would make one or two (although that is FAR from guaranteed.) Even if he does, that gives the Magic a 1 point lead with a few tics left, easily enough time for Philly to hit another game winning two or three. The play drawn up for Hedo, not only allowed him to take a shot he was comfortable with, but allowed the clock to drain down completely, ensuring that if worst came to worst, we’d be going to OT.

by DieSlowKeyshawn on Apr 28, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

First of all, how do you know that play was to throw up a three?

Hold the ball, yes. Drain the clock in order to prevent a game winner by detriot, but with 3 seconds left, why not throw the ball to the All-Star center that sometimes plays on our team, i think his name is Dwight Howard. Sure they would foul him, thats exactly what we want. But if he hits one out of two we have the lead with about one second left. If he made the first, Intensionaly missing the second would make it impossible for them to even get the shot off. Regardless to us being up by one point or two, Philly had to had to take a three because there was no time. Point is this is not HEDO’s team at all. It’s Howards and Lewis’s. Hedo should never have the ball in his hands with the game on the line. period!!! Maybe it isen’t his fault its Stan’s, but with the game on the line, set up a pick and roll with Dwight atleast and dont give HEDO an isolation play. He is stupid and his game is ugly and i am excited to see him depart from Orlando after this off-season.
Being honest, he has done some big things for the team in his years here. But we could be a beast if we focused on an interior attack. Dwight Howard is a superstar…treat him as such. Get him a powerforward with some POWER and i’ll get you a ring!!

by LKMoreland on Apr 28, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

The play was designed for Hedo Turkoglu to take the three.

It was beautifully conceived because Turk had enough time to get into a rhythm dribbling the ball, spotting up, and ultimately, taking the shot he’s comfortable with.

There is no way the play was to take a three...

No coach in the history of basketball would draw up a play for a three when the game is tied. That would never ever ever happen…ever. The play was isolation which means he can do what he wants. What he should have wanted was to not take a three. If you drive and make a layup your ahead. If you miss but get fouled, your ahead. (HEDO is good at screaming like a baby when someone breathes on him, you can hear it in the nosebleds.) If he drove the entire Philly defense would come to him leaving dwight to grad a put back easily. Go look at the tape, Howard could have easily got deep position on the post and had an entry pass find him. And you dont have to shot to get fouled in basketball, its called the Bonus. I’d rather Philly heave the ball from half court then get the ball on thier side of the court and allow and possible make. Thats why its called a Prayer. Sounds like your watching the games but you have never play’d in one and dont understand how it works.

by LKMoreland on Apr 28, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

If you watched the pressers after the game ..

.. you’d note that, clearly it was an isolation set, but that SVG intended for Hedo to take the shot he’s most comfortable with, which is the fadeaway three. The coach didn’t say that explicitly but that was the assumption. I agree that it would have been wiser to attack the basket, create the foul, and shoot some throws. But it’s a moot point, because that’s not what happened.

I understand basketball concepts, seeing that I’ve played the game since I was a kid. No need to assume and belittle my opinion by pre-judging my knowledge.

You're now contradicting your self.

First you said get the ball to Dwight in that situation, after his free throws, Philly surely has time to put up a shot from half court.

Now you’re saying, you’d rather have Philly heave it from half court than get the ball on their side and set up a possible make?

After that tremendous flip-flop, I now seriously question who understands the concepts of the game.

Listen son..

You questioning my fan hood is a bit much. If you just compared HEDO’s 3-point ability to Ray Allen then i am about to cry. You misunderstood what i said. Ball should be in the hands of someone other than him, and taking a threepoint shot to win the game is stupid hands down. Doc did not draw up a three, he made a play that got the ball to Allen. He does with it what he wants. In his case taking a three might be a better shot. In our case, its not.

He made a play that got Allen the ball. Then allen makes the decision from there. There haven’t been many clutch Magicians because we haven’t been in a contending position very long. I don't think you realize how virtually impossible it is to get the ball to Dwight Howard with 3 seconds remaining

and then have him fouled with only 1 second remaining? I can’t believe I’m even taking part in this argument. DH would be fouled immediately. It takes time to get the entry pass to him, have him set and go up for a shot, it’s just not feasibly smart to go to him with the game on the line, the higher percentage shot is Turk anywhere on the floor with the clock at 1 second or less than Dwight at the line with the game on the line and the Sixers with time to get a shot off. Keep in mind they had a time out. Whether he made 1 or 2, there probably would have been about 2-3 seconds AT LEAST, more than enough time for the Sixers to set something up from half court, I mean look, Iggy almost made that wild 3 as it is. He will get us a ring, but still, we shouldn’t be going to him in that situation everyone that watched enough Magic basketball can tell you that.

The three-point shot, when you think about it, wasn't wise ..

.. but as DSK said, that’s the shot that Hedo Turkoglu is most comfortable taking. How many times have we seen Turk take a fade-away three to win the game? A bunch of times.

I agree, somewhat, that the better course of action would have been to attack the basket and draw the foul, but it’s a moot point now. Not sure why you’re hating on the dude. He isn’t stupid.

hedo=he dont

hedo has hit many great shots for us over the years, but he is an illegimate scoring threat. He does the same thing every game, he runs down the court, looses the ball, lets out a ridiculus tyrkish scream in hopes of getting a foul. This works sometimes but all to often it doesnt. He needs to put up or shut up. Play like he wants another contract next year, score points, get boards, and not make turnovers. We need Paul Millsap for hedo, it would be a great trade, the jazz get another goofy foreigner and we get a beast on the boards, someone who is a decent offensive threat, and defense.

by lfreeze on Apr 28, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Hedo isn't an illegitimate scoring threat.

The reason why he had a down year this season is because every team in the NBA was keying on him defensively. Of course he’s going to regress to the mean. That’s only natural. You have to think about why it is that Turkoglu is struggling .. he’s playing on a bum ankle, he’s trying to deal with the contract situation, etc. Mentally, the dude is preoccupied.

Millsap would be nice but expect the Jazz to hold onto and re-sign him. He’s not going anywhere and they don’t need Turk anyway. Where would they play him? They already have Kirilenko, Korver, etc .. the trade doesn’t make sense, at all, on their end.

I agree that the jazz arent going to trade, but it sounded nice in theory. I dont care how much hedo has to think about, he gets paid to play basketball and make shots. So he just needs to play and while were on that subject, Lewis needs to pick his game up also, he also has a lot on his mind but this is their job, people pay money to watch the games, they also have a lot on their minds, but they pay to see the game. Stop half-a**ing it and lets win

I'm sure that Rashard Lewis

could care less about how much you pay for a ticket when his brother has cancer. If you don’t like his play, don’t buy a ticket? Don’t know what else to say, but he is going to try his hardest without having to take the fan’s economic situation into account.

LOL, I agree that I don't like when our offensive game plan is run through the Hedo drive and verbal flop.

The refs became aware of that two years ago and hasn’t worked as well as it used to anymore. Millsap for Hedo would be a good trade, but the Jazz would not do that. Plus, we’d have to resign Hedo, or he’d have to pick up his option (which he won’t) for that to even be a possibility, therefore, it’s a moot point.

Err .. Hedo isn't an idiot, first of all.

Second of all, Rashard Lewis has thrived playing power forward, more so defensively. Obviously offensively Big L could benefit more from being more versatile with his game (attacking the basket, posting up, etc), but nevertheless, he causes matchup problems at the 4.

Re-signing Gortat would be nice but the priority is and will be re-upping Turkoglu. Kiss the Polish Hammer goodbye, because unless GM Otis Smith tweaks the roster and makes some moves, Marcin is gone.

As a person who watched the Pistons as much as I watched the Magic the past 10 + years...

I say YES. The dude has been mighty impressive for a guy his age and given his injuries. With McDyess you have a guy who is willing to put it all on the floor. He has the ability to knock down the 20 footer, rebound well, play defense and hustle. And believe me when I say this dude has heart like you wouldnt believe. I actually felt incredibly bad for him the last few years the Pistons missed the Finals cause he joined them just after they won the title and was the only one hungry for a title. It really hurt seeing him after there playoff exits. Dude has rebounded from his injuries to be one of the most likeable dudes in the league.
I know there is gonna major concern for mileage here but I dont think he would have to exert himself so much in Orlando, given Stan’s plea for the others to play D. More likely, he can come in as a vetran leader and provide a vocal presence in the locker room and assist Dwight on the floor as well as being a mentor. I like this more than the idea of bringing in Sheed as a backup role to mentor Dwight as has been rumoured and suggested often.

Pay the man! He's been more CLUTCH during his Orlando career than any of his teammates.

Who would we trust more to take game winner after game winner? TURK! He’s playing through an ankle injury, although he’s had an off series (the first three games) let’s not forget he was an integral part of one of our most successful seasons ever. He’s also the reason why we’re still alive and this series isn’t 3-1 in Philly’s favor. Are we really that much of a “what have you done for me lately?” fanbase? Well, if we are, I see no reason why anyone should have a bad thing to say about the man, TODAY.

If a team wants to overpay for him (will probably happen, depending on how well he plays the rest of the postseason) then we obviously won’t be able to match. With that said, say we get a big 4, say it was McDyess or even someone a bit better and younger. With the current roster, who becomes the go to guy with games on the line? Rashard? Courtney? I just don’t see us having someone to his the big pressure shots in the fourth quarter if we lose Hedo.

I remember a stat from last season, it was either from last year's stats or the year before

but the stat was: 4th quarter leading scorers and the top two were:

1)Kobe
2)Lebron

#3? Yep. Hedo.

I could agree with that, although with the game winning shot on the line, I’d be hard pressed to even find 10 people I’d rather have taking the shot than Hedo.

Here are clutch stats from 2007-2008, Hedo was 14th

This only accounts for 5 minutes left in the 4th or OT, with neither team winning by more than 5 points, so it’s not very accurate, but:

This year, the same stat he’s not even top 30.

Hedo.

He was clutch last year, insofar, that Turkoglu turned it on in the fourth quarter. The reason why he doesn’t rank high in clutch stats is for one main reason, efficiency. Turk is not efficient in crunch-time .. he wasn’t last year and he isn’t this year.

I say it was a stupid shot that went in and now HEDO is on the Sentinal repping his Orlando Jersey like a rapper from Compton. Come on man, you know im not for real.

Im just mocking people who think HEDO is clutch. Here is the conclusion we can draw from todays argument. HEDO is undoubtly a good player. But he is the kind of player you love or hate i guess. I, for one my brothers, dont like his game and i sqirm whenever the ball is in his hands. Others think he is a GOD like idol to build a team around. There is just something about him i dont like. Alright someone answer this….Are you willing to spend the money he will require next year on him?? Now bum might not be the word because the man had a nice house and such…But he could build a mansion with all the bricks he’ll be throwing over the course of his new contract if we try to keep him. So say goodbye to HEDO and hello to a chicken-sandwich because if i was a GM i would have traded him for one last year.

Look.

Hedo is both complimented and criticized here. Just a few days ago, I pointed out that Turkoglu has been struggling so far in the playoffs. Next day, I gave Turk some dap with his own picture post. It’s a two-way street. When you do something right, we’ll point it out, When you do something wrong, we’ll point it out.

To answer the question, you re-sign Hedo to an affordable contract … $7 million – $8 million, at the most. Given the current economic state of the NBA and also given the fact that there are few teams with enough disposable income to make an offer to Turkoglu, expect Turk to get a “reasonable” contract offer.

Dollars and sense

-Love McDyess but like E said, very tough to sign with Hedo and Gortat. And a backup Center is more important than a backup PF. Altho he can play some at the C..

-Hedo is dope. But what if the Magic re-evaluate things over the summer? Jameer stepped up his game in the 4th qtr and now can be counted on as the closer. Could Lamar Odom be a better option? Would he be willing to leave the Lakers? This is going to be a weird year for free agents so it is WAY too early to even guess what might happen. But its still fun.

-Don’t forget about Detroit’s other PF/C: Rasheed Wallace. Huge gamble but it could work. Actually a perfect PF/C in this offense.

by L Magico on Apr 28, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

Not sold on Jameer being counted on as the closer.

He’s loved among this board and for good reason, he had a STELLAR first half and made some clutch shots in the fourth in LA. Outside of that, he hasn’t shown me enough that I can declare him as being “counted on as the closer.” Jameer did it for half a season, after tons of people were hating on his contract in regards to his play the previous two seasons, whereas Hedo has been doing it for years.

It depends on the matchup, sure.

To .. sorta answer your question, even if Bryant were on Nelson, the Magic could have rectified that problem by running a play which forces Kobe to switch to another man. Considering the weapons Orlando possesses offensively, more than likely to occur.

Push comes to shove, I'd pick McDyess over Gortat.

A few reasons … a.) he’ll come at a cheaper price b.) he fits the offense much better than Gortat does. As you alluded to, McDyess possesses the ability to sink the mid-range jumper with consistency and regularity, c.) veteran leadership. I’m a Gortat fan, but this is an instance where I favor McDyess.

Second point, Lamar Odom would be way too expensive for the Magic. He’s going to be demanding, at least, $10 million dollars .. just too steep of a price for Orlando. I love LO’s game but too pricey.

I like ‘Sheed .. but GM Otis Smith wouldn’t touch him.

I hate looking ahead to next year when this one isn't over

but this would be huge coup for the Magic. As much as I like Gortat, I’ve come to realize offensively, he and Howard would not work together for 20-25 mins a game. Even though he is good, why pay the guy more money when he’s really only going to give you about 10 mins a night, 15 tops. McDyess may not be the shot blocker Gortat is, but he is a great 1-on-1 post defender PLUS he can shoot the mid-range J so he and Howard won’t be both be clogging up the paint.

Starting line up of Jameer, Lee, Hedo, Lewis, Howard. Alston, Pietrus and Dice getting 15-20 off the bench…this team will be phenomenal. But again…don’t like looking ahead too much when there’s still work to be done this year.

We’re paying Lew too much to have his growth stunted by Turk. How can he become a closer if he doesn’t get the opportunity to close? As much as DH says give the ball at the end, if you watch tape, he will almost always defer because he knows he won’t make the right decision with the ball (imho).
