3QC End-Season Awards: Defensive Player Of The Year (Except Dwight)

Since the second-half of the season has gone by for the Orlando Magic, it's time to present the inaugural Third Quarter Collapse End-Season Awards. Instead of conducting a regular poll, we at 3QC have decided for you to vote and comment which Magic player you feel is most deserving of each award.

Who do you feel is the Defensive Player Of The Year (except Dwight*)?

The results will be compiled & announced on Saturday.

*We're aware that Dwight Howard would have won this award going away, so he's excluded from the discussion.

I'm between Courtney and Rashard,

and I don’t know how okay it is to vote for Marcin, but I think he deserves it. He anchors our bench, and without him teams would get a lot closer to us when we have leads. He’s Dwight (okay not really) but that dominant in terms of bench players. So…

…MARCIN GORTAT

(why yes I realize my subject is misleading, haha ; )

Gortat is definitely on the level of Howard, defensively. In my opinion, at least.

Blocks at a similar rate. Rebounds at a similar rate. I can go on.

Not sure about his total defense, though

If you put Marcin on another team and give him Dwight’s minutes, he might get you comparable rebounding and shot-blocking, but probably not comparable overall defense.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Marcin, but his help defense is sometimes… not so great.

Yeah, I'd agree that his help defense could improve (which I'm sure it will).

I wouldn’t dispute that fact.

Courtney Lee

Sure, it seems like the opposing shooting guards always smoke the Magic, but the rook makes it look like the guard is having a hard time of it.

C. Lee definitely makes opposing guards work.

Lee for my vote

I'm going to cheat

and say the whole Magic team. Its really hard to name a standout besides Dwight.

The whole Magic team just played great team defense. It really was a group effort.

Well said.

At midseason I believe I voted for Courtney Lee, but I'm changing my vote

Lee’s been marvelous, and I like him a lot. I do feel like his defense has really tapered off since midseason, though.

Rashard Lewis is my selection.

by Evan Dunlap on Apr 14, 2009 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

I'm with Rashard.

His numbers are better and he plays out of position. Courtney Lee was very good, but Rashard was better.

Rashard

give him my vote as well

Rashard Lewis

Courtney Lee has been very, very good. But he is still too green. He has done a great job against Wade, Kobe and Lebron but he is not the best on the team yet.

My vote is for Rashard. The PF’s we’ve played against this year have been relatively quiet and that’s because Rashard has really worked on the defensive end.

Indeed.

I was at that game, actually, and I just shook my head. Embarrassing.

Lewis

for his consistent effort every nite and the way he dogs his man.

Rashard Lewis, and this is the only ballot in which I will openly lobby for a player.

Defensively, dude has transitioned from SF to PF and became a better defender, as a result.

C. Lee has been excellent this year, no doubt.
opposing PER: 12.4 (SG’s)
net defensive plus/minus: +0.9 [this is middle-of-the-road]
eFG% allowed: 47.2%

.. but man, Rashard Lewis (already pointed these numbers out yesterday).
opposing PER: 13.9 (PF’s)
net defensive plus/minus: -0.9
eFG% allowed: 46.5%

.. and for good measure, check out how Lee & Lewis stack up defensively, overall.

Those numbers provide a good idea of the excellent defensive efforts of Big L.

More numbers. I forgot to post these yesterday.

C. Lee
adjusted defensive plus/minus: 2.32

R. Lewis
adjusted defensive plus/minus: -1.79

Just a reminder. For defense, the lower the plus/minus numbers, the better.

For offense, it’s vice-versa.

Rashard.

For a player, we were told by Sonics fans, that had no D, he’s really stepped it up in his time here so far.

This post was bought to you by British beer, cured meat products and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje: the player so good, they named him twice.

Shard

I said Shard mid season and I’ll say it again now.

Rashard

Became an above average defender at a completely new position after 11 years in the league. He may be overpaid, but its not because of his effort.

Shaq sucks.

I'm going to throw a bone to Jameer.

My “analysis” isn’t based on any hard numbers, but I watch the box scores and I pull out some nuggets of intelligence.

If you look at what was happening to the Magic after Jameer dropped out, you can clearly see that they got BURNED by every 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tier PG that played against them until they picked up Skip.

Jameer had some clutch play this season, and it didn’t all take place on the offensive end.

I'll say Lewis as well

He just changes things up so much for opposing teams.
