Orlando Magic News for March 4th: Shaq Lashes Out At SVG, Courtney Lee Gets Dap, and More
- ESPN and Sports Illustrated (HT: Wmillion) recently revealed their respective Second Trimester awards. Among the winners, Dwight Howard (Defensive Player of the Year) and Stan Van Gundy (Coach of the Year).
- Before he got showered with boos last night, former Magic and current Suns player Grant Hill spoke briefly with the Orlando Sentinel. Check it out.
- Today, Shaq ripped his former coach, SVG, today for Van Gundy's comments concerning O'Neal flopping last night in Orlando's victory over the Phoenix Suns last night. Chris Sheridan of ESPN has the story. Among Shaq's quotes directed towards SVG:
"And one thing I really despise is a frontrunner, so I know for a fact that he's a master of panic, and when it gets time for his team to go in the postseason and do certain things, he will let them down because of his panic. I've been there before, I've played for him."
"Now I see why everybody who plays for him doesn't like him."
"I'm not going to just sit abound and let nobodies take shots at me, and he is a nobody to me. And if he thinks he can get in a little press conference and take shots at me like I'm not going to [give] something back, he's got another thing coming."
- Jon Nichols of Basketball-Statistics announced his Most Valuable Third Team earlier today (these aren't the best players, just the individuals with the best value). On the squad? Orlando's rookie Courtney Lee.
- If you've yet to catch my Value Rating % analysis for the Magic, click here to catch Part I and Part II. In Part I, I analyzed the reserves and in Part II, I analyzed the starters. Enjoy.

Doesn't seem like he cares. Shaq loves the attention, that's for sure.

Just when you thought maybe he's alright...
He behaves like a tool again, and reminds you why you stopped liking him in the first place. Shaq is just addicted to having people talking about him and creating controversy. It’s kind of sad actually.

Oh that Shaq
I love how he can dish it out with impunity but becomes downright pouty and reactive when somebody bothers responding back.

What the heck is wrong with a frontrunner anyway?
I always thought a frontrunner was a person who leads a race. How is that bad?

I'm still trying to grasp the concept behind that quote. If I have an answer, I'll get back to you. Hah.

Shaq is a hypocrite. And I don’t know what this new rule is that he’s talking about…according to this “new rule,” the player is supposed to fall, apparently. He sounds like a bitter old man here. And knowing SVG, he’s probably not even focused on this and is already looking ahead to NJ on Friday.
I promise to commit no acts of violence, neither physical or otherwise, if things come alive...I'll say it now
I wouldn't be surprised if SVG tossed a jab back, just for the goof.
We all know that Stan isn’t afraid to mix it up verbally. Maybe he’ll respond.

imo, he won't care, in one ear out the other
a response is a sign of weakness. SVG is locked and loaded on how to stop VC Friday night.

"Now I see why everybody who plays for him doesn't like him."
SVG isn’t the one who’s bounced around 4 NBA teams and left each on horrible terms. Orl – too big of an ego. LA – wanted max money so he could show up out of shape and use the 82 games to slowly warm up for the playoffs (the media wrongly blamed Kobe at the time because of their infatuation with Shaq’s childishness, but thankfully now the majority have seen what Shaq’s really like).
Miami – throws a hissy fit because they were a D-Wade rib away from the title in 05, decides to blame SVG, and indirectly brings Riley back to the bench. 1 year later, he has to be separated from Riley in practice by Alonzo Mourning. When he does leave, he makes sure to rip Riley and Heat trainer Ron Culp on his way out.
Fact: very few people who get to know Shaq and play with him actually like him. I can certainly respect the point that Howard’s escapades in the dunk contest don’t merit discussion next to his rings, but the way Shaq is going about this reeks of jealousy, insecurity, and a desperate plea to stay relevant.

Shaq has showed that he has no respect and no class
Simply pathetic and he should be ashamed of himself. Van Gundy is the best coach we’ve ever had no matter how far coach Hill got back in the day. Shaq is simply a back stabbing and pompous individual. He will NEVER have my respect after he disrespected our best player and the man who is a big part of how good Dwight is today. I am disgusted in him right now.

Shaq just likes the attention. He's admitted that plenty of times.
I think people just need to take his comments with a grain of salt and think about the big picture, for a second. O’Neal always stirs controversy, that’s just who he is. Does he really believe what he says sometimes? Honestly? No, he’s stated that before (the Kobe ordeal, for example). It is what it is.
All in all, I’m not surprised by the comments.

SVG is a greeat guy with a real personality. While he was “MIA” after leaving his position with Maimi he became the spokesman for my alma mater’s basketball program. He spent a lot of time around campus, so almost everyone met him in some sort of fashion. He was the kind of guy that would hang out and talk to everyone, not just about basketball but about life in general.
Stan is not a nobody, if anything he is big enough to be real with “nobodies.” Shaq is a joke, there is a reason that the media tears him apart every time he leaves a team. He burns bridges everywhere. Maybe the mst sensitive, insecure athlete in sports today.
SVG's sins........
……..start with passion, and end with having that strange concept in his head that teams (and players) WANT to get better. Thats gotta be hard on Shaq who has basicly relyed on physical skills most of his career and for sure the last 5 years of his career.
I have written (and still think) that at some point SVG will outgrow his usefulness as this team matures. Stan is best suited as a builder and molder of young talent/teams, It will be interesting to see if he can change his approch as the team gets older.
As for Shaq….he is now a bitter old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn. Sad
Do no harm!!
I disagree with the assertion that we will grow out of him.
But I agree he is at hist best when he is molding, and building talent. What I would point to you for reference is the day Jordan realized he was Olojawan unless he got a jump shot. A deadly one.
Even the best players need to improve. Jordan didn’t drop 40 while on the Wizard’s because of his athleticism. I think every single one of our role players has something to learn how to do, and frankly if they stop specializing and start rounding out their game (Detroit in the early 00’s) this team could be impossible to stop.
Feel free to add anything but:
Dwight- Short Range hooks, and shots. Free Throw shooting.
Rashard- If he learns how to drive with consistency, with both hands, we won’t even know what he could do. Think Lebron, but like, the opposite. haha
Jameer- If anything really maybe decision making, but this season I can’t fault him in shot selection, shooting percentage, or anything offensive really. Maybe just some passing and defense work.
Hedo- Decision making. Reign him in. When it works, we love him. But to be real (esp. this season) he hasn’t been as on. SVG should pull him back a little.
Courtney Lee- The Rondo effect. MAKE teams fear you offensively. Force them to not leave you open. He’s so fundamentally skilled otherwise, that it’s not even worth noting. As I like to say- “He’s got this.”
Pietrus- Be DEPENDABLE. Really. Just like work on conditioning, and get used to being first off the bench. I think he would thrive in a role where he gets about 30 min. off the bench. Three’s, defense, slashing. It’s there, just put them together.
Gortat- Sounds weird, but he needs to work on convincing SVG he deserves consistent playing time. He could be really useful.
Rashard- If he learns how to drive with consistency, with both hands, we won’t even know what he could do. Think Lebron, but like, the opposite. haha/blockquote> I agree, he needs to drive, but let’s not go crazy here.

I also disagree with that notion .. that the team will essentially tune SVG out.
Stan’s one of the best coaches in the game because of his ability to adjust on the fly.

I have a hunch......
….Gortat might be difficult to keep next year. The guy is best kept secret in the NBA, soft hands, rebounds, can finish around the basket. I think Stan knows what he has here but given that Dwight gets the big minutes, teams like to go small when he out of the game and total lack of decent back up big men in the league often the better matchup is Battie.
I would like to Gortat get more opprotunites as well, perhaps when the seedings are settled Stan might think about trying him in all situations. With Battie expiring after next year he might be able to moved for cap space but only if Gortat is coming back.
Do no harm!!
Did you really use "Gortat & soft hands" in the same sentence?
The only thing soft about his hands is the butter he lubes them up with before the game. Dudes hands are worse than Hasheem Thabeet, and that’s baaaaaad.

I disagree......
….respectfully of course.
Gortat has shown me an ability to receive passes in traffic, his ability to finish has something to do with his hands, and when he gets in trouble (and yes it can look baaaaaaad) I atribute that to his inexperance (he is just a kid you know, a kid who has the Greg Oden genes making him look older)
Do no harm!!
He's played well as of late, and two games or so earlier in the season.
In between, I think it’s fair to say he’s been nothing short of a mess and just my opinion of course. I think he’s sort of a fan favorite and an easy guy to root for. Me included, I’m a jordan head and the man has a jumpman logo tatted on his leg! (albeit half, the tat isn’t finished, lol poor Gortat) I just think from what I’ve seen, he’s been more frustrating to watch than productive overall, but he has had 4 or 5 REALLY GOOD (backup center wise) games this year.

I think Gortat has been one of the more productive bench players for the Magic.
.. and certainly there are stats that can back up that notion a bit.
I would disagree with BF and agree with DSK that Gortat’s hands aren’t the greatest in the world, but they’re not completely terrible either. Marcin has shown the ability to have soft hands .. he just doesn’t show that all the time.
I will say this. Gortat has certainly been more productive than Battie. Unfortunately, as I alluded to this in my VR % post, Tony is arguably the most overpaid player on Orlando (though Pietrus could probably be in the discussion as well, for now at least).

That's not a hunch. That's a fact.
Ben already addressed that issue a month or two ago.
As for the issue of granting more playing time, I’m certain SVG wants to give Gortat more playing time but you have to think about it from a strategic perspective. Sure, a Gortat/Howard combo would be fairly stout defensively, but you’re now creating problems offensively. How?
Gortat and Howard would clutter the lane, thus affecting the spacing by which the Orlando offense thrives on. That’s basically why we see Battie in the game, more-so than Gortat. Because Tony has the ability to spread the floor with his jump shooting ability. Gortat can’t do that, now or maybe ever.
I agree that he’s a valuable role player but obviously priority #1 is re-signing Hedo. Once the Magic do that, then they can address what to do with Marcin. I love Gortat .. I think he can be an important role player for Orlando. Just have to see if the team is able to retain him.

I'll say one more thing.
I think, by addressing Shaq, SVG did something I don’t think the Orlando players or even Dwight Howard specifically will never forget.
Stan stood up for Dwight, and I think that’s an important aspect to take away from this “war of words.” I think Van Gundy earned a great deal of respect from his team for what he did.

I hope it also gives the team.....
….a circle the wagons mentality. We are not taking no crap from Shaq, or anybody else…..
Do no harm!!
Stan needs to go one more step......
……and state publicly that his team will NOT flop. As a watcher of much NBA I can say that if the Magic are not the leagues top non flopping team they have to be top five (Spurs are the worst). And this flopping is really annoying, almost outta control. Take a stand Stan…I think it will serve two purposes…
1) If the Magic publicly state that they are not a team of floppers (frame it like you did in the press conference, we are men) it has to send a message to the officals. Perhaps it cuts down on the “cheap” fouls Dwight seems to attract.
2) By extension it places the rest of the league on notice “we don’t flop, shame if you need to employ that tactic against us”. It would put a spotlight on the situation leaguewide.
Now, in reality its just a mind game, but one that just might work given the current media focus.
Do no harm!!
Flopping and Shaq...
The flopping now-a-days is a total joke and horrible for the game of basketball. The sad truth is, flopping is now just another form of defense.
At this point, I think the players are the last ones to blame. Not to say that I don’t hate flopping, because I do. I actually hate pretty much every player who does it regularly. And I will continue to question the “testicular fortitude” of any player who claims to have a pair, yet takes dives to cheat the game.
Then again, can you blame them? The NBA, David Stern, down to the officials, are the ones who are doing nothing about it. Rather, they’re almost endorsing it, as they continue to make calls for guys taking “super dives” onto the floor. It works for the players, teams; because it’s an advantage. Like I said, it really is a form of defense. And it will continue to be until something changes.
The NBA acted as if they were going to do something about flopping last post season when flops were costing teams games. Some obviously had an impact on the series (Houston/Utah comes to mind). However once the playoffs were over the talks went away.
The ONLY WAY flopping is going to be slowed down is if they start fining players; and I think they absolutely should. There are a few ways they could work the fines, but at least it would make players think about it, rather than just taking dives.
I think the fact that the NBA continues to do nothing about this issue is embarrassing.
As for Shaq, he still sounds like the same kid he was back in 92. I mean really, I almost thought he had started to change. You know, go out with some class… But in reality, it was just because he had been playing so poorly, and now that he’s having a respectable season, I guess he feels comfortable being a jackass again.
How it related to Dwight, I think it was simple. Shaq was almost right when he said he did that back in 92. Well, yeah, you got yourself some Superman tattoos, and proclaimed yourself Superman. And while having many nicknames, Superman was never as consistent as he hoped. Then Dwight came along, and being the playful kid that he is, puts on a cape in the slam dunk contest, steals the show, and has been known as Superman worldwide ever sense.
Jealous Shaq?
I mean, does Shaq think Dwight went into the dunk contest two years ago saying, "hey, I’m gonna put this cape on and steal Shaq’s nickname"? Every other player around the league, including Dwight had fun with it. That’s what it was, good fun. It didn’t have anything to do with Shaq. Yet, Shaq’s HUGE, yet very fragile ego was bruised. And that should come as no surprise… Not the first time, won’t be the last…
Imagine this: It’s only a matter of time before Dwight gets called the Magic’s all time best center. You better believe that’s going to drive Shaq insane. Ha-ha.
Then there is Van Gundy, who really didn’t say anything wrong. If anything, I agree with what some said above, in how he was just standing up for his player. Flopping is bad as it is, yet alone having a 350+ pound guy do it. That’s just retarded. It should have ended there, but Shaq went and made it completely personal, as he’s done for his entire career. In the end, Shaq’s the one who looks like an idiot. Although it’ll be chalked up as "Shaq being Shaq"…
It’s a shame because he’s having a solid season. It’d be nice if he could end his career with some class, but it looks as if his big/fragile ego will prevent him for doing so.
With the recent shots and both Dwight and Stan, does anyone still want to see Shaq’s number retired anytime soon?
Lastly, did I hear Shaq right? Did I hear him say he was going to finish the season in the top 5 in scoring (34th now) and have 5 rings (9th seed) before he retires? Does that mean he’s going to go sign with a legit contender after "setting the Suns"?
In all seriousness, Shaq really needs to just shut up and play; because with all of his "greatness", they’re still in the 9th spot, and things don’t look promising. I’m sure that’s got to sting a little… I mean really, the Suns were always atop of the West, before Shaq came along…
i don't get it.
how does this make svg a frontrunner? does shaq even know what it means?
