Apparently Otis Smith Is Pulling The Trigger, Trading Keith Bogans For Milwaukee's Tyronn Lue

Adrian Warjanowski says that Magic are going to give Keith Bogans for Tyronn Lue.  Wow...  I guess as a backup...  to Anthony Johnson...

This definitely doesn't look like the answer that Orlando needs, I mean, he can shoot a three, but he's pretty horrible in all other aspects of the game.  I'm tenative giving him a crack at the rotation even with a healthy roster let a lone one with a depleted PG slot.  I'd take Will Conroy over that any day, or even just someone that can handle a half-court set.

Sorry Magic fans, Tyronn Lue will not take you far at all in the playoffs...  Though he does have a ring...  I don't know if being utterly embarrassed time after time by failing to contain Allen Iverson in the NBA Finals really counts a whole lot in terms of playoff experience though.

Honestly, do you have to smoke crack to work in the Orlando front office

Other than drafting Dwight and Courtney and trading for Nelson, what have they actually done well?

by big aaron on Feb 5, 2009 2:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Penny and Shaq weren't horrible

However, drafting Franny Vasquez was an epic fail.

That was just a case of GM Otis Smith not going with his gut.

He’s admitted that’s the only move he’s made that he didn’t go with his instincts.

sorry

I meant in the last few tears. Obviously there were some great moves back in the day.

I feel sick about this

Not a smart move…makes us look desperate, and we shouldn’t have been desperate enough for Lue. This is his second stint here, too. Ugh!

by Marie on Feb 5, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Getting rid of Bogans for Lue

doesn’t exactly scream “desperate” to me.

not when he is only averaging

5 points in 21 mpg.

His production is way down. He has lost his value from last season.

He may have a little more value than lue, but not much. Stop panicking.

so is Lue

I'm aware of that.

But that doesn’t change the fact that Bogans has more value as an expiring contract than what the Magic netted in return.

You said All Lue is

is nothing more than a backup pg. So what is Bogans?

by UNFNOLE on Feb 5, 2009 2:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nothing more than a back-up SG .. but again, he has a bit more value given that he's an expiring contract.

Plus GM Otis Smith could have paired him up with another possible expiring contract (Cook, Foyle, etc.) and/or picks for a better player.

The value of an expiring contract is a bit higher now-a-days, given the state of the economy, and the fact that many teams would like to cut payroll due to this factor. Orlando could have taken advantage of that ..

But I digress.

Now...

Can we all agree D-League might have been a better answer!?

Now it would have been, since Smith went for Lue.

I was under the impression that he wasn’t going after Lue .. obviously I was told wrong.

break out the spirits. This move may not look bad until the playoffs when Rondo and Mo Williams are going for 30 and 10

Ehh...

Well, I guess this is about as good as we’re going to get. AJ and Lue. I think we could have done better but I’m just glad we didn’t give up a 1st rounder.

Yes, the D-League would have been a good option. But Otis/Front office is allergic to the D-league.

by L Magico on Feb 5, 2009 2:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ugh. He better not take on Darrell Armstrong's number again.

Number 10 needs to be retired since Armstrong seems to be done playing. I was cool with Bogans having it, but not Lue.

by funny80sguy on Feb 5, 2009 2:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Told you guys Otis wouldn't / couldn't get it done.

He thinks this is the answer? He’s not serious about winning an NBA championship this year, that is clear. He merely picked up Lue to have some depth on the bench. I said all along he wouldn’t make a move and well, he might has well have not made one at all. This is garbage!

I hate to agree

This move stinks, I don’t see us competing for a championship this year.

Rondo and Mo Williiams are going to kill AJ and Lue..

How do we end up on the wrong side of another trade?

Can anyone explain the ariza for cook trade?

"No matter where you go, you are what you are playa"-Jay Z

by Wmillion on Feb 5, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can explain it.

Otis got Mo who contributed in the playoff push last year. Now Mo’ is long gone and Cook doesn’t play, while Ariza is an above average / good contributor to a championship contender. Otis can overpay for contracts and occasionally make a good signing or two (Dwight/Jameer.) When it comes to making trades mid-season, he’s just about as bad as it gets in the business, nothing but fleece jobs!

You know . . .

I wasn’t expecting the world or anything, but Tyronn Lue? Come on! I would have been more excited if the Magic picked up an unheralded D-Leaguer.

not a good look.

The last time I saw him, he no longer had the cornrows

Initially, the Sentinel website had a photo of Acie Law rather than Lue. It’s been corrected.

That would have been smart.

The Sentinel has a Lue photo gallery/slideshow

I had to laugh at the one of Dwight blocking him. Then there was one of him wrapped around Jason Terry’s leg. He even has a shot with Ostertag.

Yeah, he cut his cornrows.

That hairstyle is really starting to disappear both in the NBA & in real life.

I like the trade

I think it was a smart move by Otis. We fulfilled a need while gaining a little breathing space under the cap (Bogans $2.9M – Lue $2.2M + $5k cash). We had too many SGs and only 1 PG. Hopefully this allows Jameer to get that surgery and return for the POs. I liked Lue since his days back here with TMac. He was always solid for us and I believe he was the 3rd leader in scoring for us that year behind McGrady and JHoward. I hate to lose Keith, but we all knew that something had to happen.

"Get that surgery and return for the POs?"

You realize if Jameer gets the surgery now, he MAY be ready for Camp next fall. If Jameer rehabs without surgery and plays in the playoffs, gets surgery in the off-season, he will miss the first month or so of next season?

I'd rather Nelson rehab and return this season.

Missing the first month of next season means nothing when the Magic are trying to compete for a Title this year. That’s a trade-off I, as a fan, would happily make.

Rehab the shoulder

I don’t think it will work. I think it will nag him even he returns and he will have a tough time contributing.. .

I strained my shoulder 6 weeks ago and it still nags me, torn labrum, I just don’t see it.

"No matter where you go, you are what you are playa"-Jay Z

by Wmillion on Feb 5, 2009 3:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True, I think the most recent example that is similar though is Dwayne Wade

And again, he did the whole rehab and try to come back for playoffs. Then he had to shut down for most of the following year, and the Heat went 15-67. I don’t think that Magic will tank that bad without Nelson, but it’s worth noting what happened when another player did it. On that note, I agree with erivera, everyone’s different.

by Jaceman on Feb 5, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You have to take into account that ..

Wade had more than just a bum shoulder .. his body was practically broken two years ago from all the punishment he absorbed. Nelson is a different case in this instance.

yes they are

But, the % say he will not be able to come back and contribute, especially at the level he left.

by Wmillion on Feb 5, 2009 5:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Right, but ..

Even if his output won’t be at the same level before the injury, Jameer Nelson will still be playing at a higher ability than a healthy A.J. or Lue.

see I am not so sure..

In his shooting shoulder. Look at Brand.

I think we should have made a bigger move and told Jameer to get his surgery. When is the last time you saw a player not get surgery and come back to play to solid, not even at a high level?

What I don’t want is he try to play and lose him basically for this year and next.

"No matter where you go, you are what you are playa"-Jay Z

by Wmillion on Feb 5, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree that the Magic should have gone "bigger fish" via trade.

But it is what it is.

As for players that waited on surgery and still be able to perform with their injuries (rehabbed, of course), there are plenty of examples (Kobe, etc.). Granted, their injuries were not as extreme, but there is precedence.

Obviously this situation is different because, as you mentioned, it’s Jameer’s shooting shoulder so that makes things tougher for him to try to come back. I don’t think it would hurt to try, but I wouldn’t blame him packing it in for the season and just rest up for next year.

I'm reading conflicting reports

ESPN is stating that Orlando is receiving cash in the trade, and the Sentinel is reporting that the Buck is receiving cash. It better be Orlando getting the cash to at least have attained a moral victory in this trade.

I believe the Bucks are getting the cash

Since Lue has the bigger contract.
