This is a very good article. Everyone should read it. And then marvel as we don’t even consider any of the options.

Definitely a nice take on players that are below the radar

Besides, isn’t the D-League all about being there for NBA teams to mine for talent?

The Magic haven't called up a D-Leaguer since 2003/04, or before Otis was GM

Do a ctrl+f on this page for “Orlando Magic.” It won’t take long.

I really have a hard time believing Otis is just going to blink and suddenly realize there’s a place he can get young, cheap, highly motivated talent.

However...

He has brought in talent that came in through a D-League call-up… Mike Wilks and Anthony Johnson, to name a couple..

Ridiculous? I think Not.
Upside? Plenty.

The D-League isn't the answer.

No guy from there is going to magically turn into a productive/useful player for the Magic and immediately become a part of the rotation. I find that hard to believe, even if some of the names thrown out there are lighting it up in the “minors”.

There’s a reason why peeps are in the D-League ..

Like what?

To develop? You gotta start somewhere…

And some benchwarmer from a .400 team we get in a trade is going to magically turn in a useful player???

Sometimes players get overlooked. It happens in all sports. Then they get a chance and prove they can contribute. Are we going to get anyone close to Jameer from the D-League? Of course not. We’re at best going to get a guy who can contribute in 10-15 minutes a night. But that’s all we’re going to get in a trade either, and we have in my opinion no better chance of getting a decent player, and an absolute guarantee we’ll have to give up a lot more to get that same chance of a decent player.

I already said my piece.

If Tyronne Lue was the target of GM Otis Smith all along, then yeah .. might as well go to the D-League since Lue is nothing more than a back-up PG.

However, as I said elsewhere here, I was under the impression that Smith was going after a much better player than Lue, hence my dismissal of the D-League as an option because some of the players in question were superior to anyone in the D-League .. but now it’s a moot point.
