Off-Day Open Thread: 3QC Questionnaire
Don't forget to check out Ben's recap of the Magic/Heat romp. Grazie. - ER
The Third Quarter Collapse community has slowly continued to grow and as such, with an increasing readership (which includes the Orlando Sentinel!), there's a project that I've been beginning to consider doing. However, instead of delving into this venture blindly, I wanted to get the pulse of the 3QC collective to see if there is enough interest and support for such a project down the road.
So without further ado, here's my idea.
I'm toying with the possibility of starting a weekly podcast on 3QC in the future. The podcast would occur once a week and essentially, I'd be providing a synopsis of what's been happening with the Orlando Magic for the past seven days (analysis included, etc.). The length would be roughly 10-15 minutes. I have a format in mind but I definitely would like for the 3QC community to offer input, as to what everyone would want to hear, and what not. This is for you and thus, it's only fair that you, the people, help shape the content that would be covered. Simple as that.
I'd like to know a few things.
- Would you listen to a 3QC weekly podcast?
- What material would you like covered?
- What segments would you like used?
Any type of feedback would be greatly appreciated. Please don't be shy. If you wouldn't listen to the podcast, don't hesitate to say so. If you would listen to the podcast, don't hesitate to share your ideas. Look forward to hearing from ya'll.
Thanks!

I think a pod cast could be a great addition to the 3QC repertoire
I think some more off-the-wall elements would work well in the podcast. Maybe look at the slightly less-serious side from time to time so it doesn’t get too heavy in terms of subject matter and the listener being bombarded with constant numbers and acronyms. I love the stuff posted from basketballreference etc but don’t think it would translate to audio.
My only other advice is to get someone with an authoritative voice (think news reader) but good personality to do it. I have no idea what Ben or Eriv sound like but I hate these podcasts around the web with whiny mid-teens thinking they know everything that think they are the next Howard Stern.
Well, I'd be the one conducting the podcast.
If you need credentials, I’m a Senior at DePaul University double-majoring in Journalism & PR/Advertising .. so given my journalism background (look at my signature), plus the fact I’ve worked at my school’s radio station, should be enough to make me worthy of tackling such a project. No?

LOL
Sorry. I know I probably sounded conceited in my response (my bad!), but ..
I just wanted to address the issue of big aaron’s concern over the “whiny mid-teens thinking they know everything.” Hence why I laid out my credentials, just to show my qualifications, per se.

Second That....
…..you guys know your stuff, but in Podland delivery and humor are important. Blending the basketball and Magic “stat thing” with some offbeat stuff is a good approch.
Do no harm!!
Thanks for the kind words.
.. so make the podcast an easy listen, essentially. Good idea.

Not sure
TBJ and Bill Simmons are about the only ones I listen to and their pretty good. It would definitely add a new element to the site which would be pretty cool. But I’m not sure how much you can say in the podcast that isn’t already written. Stats would be tough to cover on audio because it might get a little boring. Maybe the interviews on the podcast? I definitely would want some inside info from scouts on what the Magic are looking for in the draft, FA, salary cap stuff, etc. Maybe breaking down the Magic offense so we can understand it better?
But, you guys have made this site better and better so I’m sure it will be sick.
I hear you. That's why I want to make the length 10-15 minutes so the podcast is manageable.
I don’t think the material would be too redundant. Obviously there’s going to be a tiny bit of overlap, in terms of information shared, but it wouldn’t be too glaring of a problem. Most of the stuff I post are analytical pieces, which (as some others have said) wouldn’t really translate well in a podcast. I’d be describing a bunch of numbers that’d get lost to the listener since it’s being heard, opposed to read.
In terms of inside information, I can probably get in contact with some of the interviewees I’ve had. That wouldn’t be too hard, I don’t think.

I'd give it a shot
but 10-15 sounds a little lengthy for me. a podcast is something I’ll listen to while I’m taking a five minute break at work. Not saying that it should only be 5 min., but I think a 15 minute podcast would turn me away from listening. I don’t know the typical length of a podcast, but thats just my opinion.
Besides that, more multimedia on 3QC sounds good to me.
I like it...
And having worked in a commercial radio station for over 3 years, i can back up Big Aaron in saying how important the ability of anyone broadcasting to deliver ‘entertainment’ not just facts and figures.
The sentinel provides a Magic game-by-game podcast by Tim Povak (?) so that facet is already covered, so i think a ‘behind the scenes’ thing would be great for your listeners.
Great idea though!

Could you further expand on that comment, "behind the scenes"?
I’m intrigued by that idea.

Rather than do what the sentinel doess:
‘This is the score, these were the stats, this trade was made for $X million dollars etc, etc’
You guys can set yourselves apart from that with essentially what you guys post here on the site. player interviews (i realise they won’t be 1st hand interviews- Ben sitting down with D12), but take us into the inner workings of the club and the players as well as the on court stats and reviews.

Ah, okay. I see.
Thanks for expanding your explanation a bit. Makes sense now.

Sounds like a fun idea.

Go for it!
Actually, I’m one of the rare persons in existence who does not own an I Pod and probably never will.
It sounds like a good idea, though. I’m sure it would supplement 3QC really well.

Ditto
though I will download it on ITunes (if i can figure that out, since I don’t use it much).
Looking forward to it. Please though (not that you have much this year) don’t whine about how little the national media pays attention to the Magic. That just get’s old.
Maybe some fun trivia? I always love the “guess the player” that Ben does. Maybe you could give the answer every podcast to the previous one. I dunno, just an idea.

You don't need to own an iPod to listen to a podcast. You just need iTunes or any media player.
It’s fairly easy to download and listen to. The iPod part of the deal is just for convenience purposes.
For iTunes, it’s not hard at all to download a podcast. I can provide a quick how-to tutorial for everyone, that way people would know how to access/download/listen to the podcast. That’s not a problem.

That shows how dumb I am when it comes to computer technology
I didn’t know that you could download that on ITunes.
The tutorial about how to download it would be appreciated whenever you get this podcast up and started. Thanks, erivera!

sounds like a great idea to me. just do it. if it needs tweaking, we’ll give feedback and the format can be changed until it fits the 3QC mold we’re looking for. also it would be nice to interview, or just have sessions, with posters from time to time. i’m sure there are a lot of posters who want to get involved without overshadowing the host, rivera.
yea good idea to have a podcast
I would like to hear about the magic on weekly podcast basis just leave at around 15 minutes. segments on players and schedules , teams weaknesses and strenghts, maybe some interviews. let me know when you get it going. Just do it.
Definitely. Thanks for the various input.
.. and also, welcome to 3QC officially!

Certainly a good idea!
A week in review/preview section would be interesting from a Magic Centric perspective. I’d also like to hear about trends in top teams in terms of offensive and defensive efficiency differential, just to see who is on/off their respective games. You could even steel a page from over at orlandomagiczone.com and do a stock meeting, discussing how you think the players did over the week and what not. Plus throw in whatever hot news items are out there and you have a hell of a show! Good luck!

Great ideas. Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate it.

Yeap! Great idea!
How about you commenting on the diff power raking. You could call it "Taking a Power Hit orsomething. Basically, you will comment on wether we deserve or not the position that was given by the diff publications, like SI, ESPN,FOX, ETC
I will see the Dolphins win a SUPER BOWL before i die(21 years and counting)
Nice. That sounds catchy, in a good way.

Alright Magic fans. Its time for our segment that we call (drumroll please) the "Power Struggle"
Just chiming in. I like the idea too.
Yes on the Podcast
I listen to the ESPN ones but they are very frustrating for the same reason that ESPN is so frustrating. I don’t care about Stephon Marbury!
I would like to hear a podcast about a team and player that I follow.
If you're not having fun, stop participating.
