NBA Trade Deadline Open Thread

Well, today is the trade deadline and to spur discussion here on the happenings around the NBA, I decided to create an open thread so that the community can react to trades that have currently occurred and may occur in the next few hours.

Want to discuss deals that have already went down? Want to debate which team got the better of a trade? Want to share trade rumors you've heard? Want to gripe that Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith isn't making another move? Fire away with your comments.

Jameer seeking second opinion before opting for surgery...

posted this in last post and fan post, but figured it’s important enough to be in the deadline open thread.

He'd be a great addition for their team. He'd probably also have no gripes about being traded 2 times in a month.

Anything to get out of Charlotte and play with the World Champs, he’s gotta be juiced about the possibility of that coming to fruition.

He's probably happy to be out of PHX too

Well, maybe not, I’m not sure…he and Nash are good friends. Diaw was happy to be gone.

Well, it looks like their old offensive system is being brought back, which is good.

Porter was um, frankly, stupid when you have that potent high scoring offense and try to flip the script and turn the players into defensive specalists = FAIL. Look for the Suns to pick it up big time down the stretch here, Amare’s going nowhere!

His mind is completely set on making sure Hedo sticks around after this season. That’s his main priority.

Cavs trying to acquire Shaq
ESPN.com contributor Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that the Cavs have offered Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to the Phoenix Suns for O’Neal.

And sources close to the process have confirmed to ESPN.com that the teams are indeed in talks involving O’Neal, which would offer the Suns some of the payroll relief they’ve been seeking. Because only $1.5 million of Pavlovic’s contract is guaranteed next season, Phoenix would slice $5.5 million off of its 2009-10 payroll if it agreed to send Shaq to the Cavs.

It’s believed, though, that the Suns are resistant to taking back Wallace and thus trying to convince Cleveland to part with Wally Szczerbiak’s $13.8 million expiring contract instead, which would turn this into a huge financial windfall for Phoenix.

Update
UPDATE (12:29 p.m. ET): Multiple sources with knowledge of the talks between Cleveland and Phoenix today are saying as of noontime that a deal actually coming together to team Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James is very unlikely.

No one is denying that the teams have talked, but we’re getting strong hints now that this deal is in no way close.

An interesting thing to look at might be who gets bought out...

Rumor says Joe Smith hopes the trade doesn’t go down so he can work out a buyout and sign with the Celtics (a la PJ Brown/Sam Cassell). Additionally, there are murmurings of Drew Gooden being bought out by the Kings, and should he resign with another team they’d save more money. I can see a lot of teams going after a guy like Gooden, decent mid range shot, decent post moves, pretty good rebounder. I’m actually more interested in who gets bought out at this point, because other than maybe Blazers, who probably won’t make a move, most contention level teams would probably be standing pat.

by Jaceman on Feb 19, 2009 1:29 PM EST reply actions

I heard that about Joe Smith as well

by Marie on Feb 19, 2009 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

Think Otis Smith takes a stab at Drew Gooden if he gets bought? He’d definitely be a huge plus to the Magic.

by Jaceman on Feb 19, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Gooden isn't the answer though.

Plus the Magic wouldn’t be able to afford him without heading into the luxury tax.

Right, that's the point.

Because the trade was rescinded, Joe Smith is hoping the Thunder buy out his contract.

Knicks make a deal.

Chad Ford: Yes. Bulls and Knicks have agreed to a trade. Larry Hughes for Tim Thomas and Jerome James. I’m told it’s waiting for league approval.

by DieSlowKeyshawn on Feb 19, 2009 1:32 PM EST reply actions

That's a good deal for the Knicks.

Makes sense on two fronts. Hughes’ contract expires in, say it with me, 2010.

Plus, D’Antoni’s style of play is one of the few offensive schemes that will actually work with a black hole like Larry Hughes. He can chuck up all the shots he wants, because there’s plenty to go around.

I like the move.

Former Senior Writer for DePaul's Scout.com website

by erivera7 on Feb 19, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Seems like a lot of contract exchanging

and not a lot of real talent going to contending teams.
Salmons and Miller in Chicago should help them out but Miller is no low post threat.

Hughes for THomas and James? I thought Tim Thomas fit D’Antonit’s style perfectly.

Shelden Williams might be the worst #5 pick in recent history.

And the Magic get….??

by L Magico on Feb 19, 2009 1:52 PM EST reply actions

This contract exchanging doesn't make sense for either team though.

Hughes, Thomas, James all have contracts that expire at the end of 2009-2010.

Former Senior Writer for DePaul's Scout.com website

Agreed.

Both contracts expire after this year. Wilcox averages over 8 rebounds a game, he’s a respectable back up to David Lee. Have NO IDEA what OKC is thinking with this one, guessing Wilcox just doesn’t want to play anymore after that trade didn’t go through.

Well Otis has an out...

he’s going to say, “we didn’t rush into making a move because we thought Jameer might have been able to make it back and rehab.”

When they decide to force Jameer to have surgery, he’s going to say: “Obviously, things didn’t progress like we thought they would, so we didn’t rush into any deals at the deadline, but Jameer is now going to have season ending surgery and we’re prepared to go to the playoffs with the guys we’ve got, Anthony Johnson and Tyrone Lue.”

WHAT. A. JOKE. !!!!!!!!!!

"Shoot first, ask questions last" Jameer Nelson

by DieSlowKeyshawn on Feb 19, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Jameer isn't the issue anymore, and Otis knows it

There’s been a gaping hole, talent-wise, behind Jameer in the rotation since both Arroyo and Dooling left in the summer. It’s not a new situation. AJ was never going to cut it as a main backup, let alone emergency starter. This point guard has been sorely needed even coming off the bench, but now that guard is being inserted into the starting lineup for, potentially, the rest of the season and the playoffs.

I’m praying to god we somehow get Andre Miller from Philly. He’s what we need at the point to distribute the ball accurately to our guys around the court. He’s a cheap-ish contract and, I believe, he expires this summer, so we have the option of dropping him if it doesn’t work, or the option to pick him up again for next season and beyond.

I’d rather we make a trade and the season ends up in a first round crash-out than make no trade and end the exact same way. It’s the lack of trying I can’t accept.

by big aaron on Feb 19, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

$10 million is cheapish?

You’d have to give up like half the roster to make it work… that’d be like Cook, Battie, and Redick, for a third PG.

by Jaceman on Feb 19, 2009 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

My bad

I thought his contract was around $6 mil.

Also, WTF happened to the TPE we got from the Dooling mess?

by big aaron on Feb 19, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

.. I don’t expect Andre Miller to be traded.

For the sake of Orlando fans...

I hope not Earl Watson or Jamaal Tinsley.

Might be another small name, like Marcus Williams or something.

by Jaceman on Feb 19, 2009 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

I'm trying to get names, but I'm waiting to be told.

If I had to guesstimate, Conley, Telfair, Tinsley (bleh), and a few other names.

Former Senior Writer for DePaul's Scout.com website

by erivera7 on Feb 19, 2009 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Telfair would be a very welcome addition

He could slot straight into the starting five and produce decent enough numbers. Anything is better than the weakest PG rotation in the league right now.

by big aaron on Feb 19, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

To be honest, I don't like Telfair.

He’s no better than Anthony Johnson, but I know he’s been available for a while ..

Former Senior Writer for DePaul's Scout.com website

by erivera7 on Feb 19, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I seriously doubt Memphis will give up Conley after how he's been playing w/ the coaching change...

He’s definitely playing a lot better so I don’t see him being offered, Grizz probably would trade out Kyle Lowry first. Telfair I’m not so hot on.

Another name I hope you don’t get would be Mike James though.

by Jaceman on Feb 19, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

I'd welcome Lowry with open arms and a red carpet.

Personally, I think Kyle Lowry is better than Mike Conley, currently, so I wouldn’t mind the Magic acquiring the former ’Nova product at all.

I doubt the Magic are considering Mike James, so don’t worry there.

Former Senior Writer for DePaul's Scout.com website

by erivera7 on Feb 19, 2009 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Lowry would be good too.

Not just a decent PG but certainly a project with something to prove after being buried in Memphis for no real reason

by big aaron on Feb 19, 2009 2:54 PM EST reply actions

For sure. He's the kind of thing I was hoping for but we eneded up with Jar Jar Binks from Milwaukee instead

Like I say, I can’t really work out why Memphis seemingly gave up on him but I’d gladly have him in Blue & White

by big aaron on Feb 19, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Yes.

Well, Conley has been ballin’ as of late, so that’s why Lowry has been pushed to the back-burner a bit.

Ding dong. It is past 3 pm EST.

It doesn’t appear GM Otis Smith will be making a move, unless a trade is already in the works. If that’s the case, the NBA allows teams additional time to flesh out the details.

However, I haven’t heard anything that Smith has a deal in the making ..

Oh snap!
POSTED: Feb. 19 — 3:05 p.m. ET

Alston
Alston

Marc Stein: Looks like we have a fairly significant three-way deal that has been submitted to the league just before the trade deadline.

NBA front-office sources tell ESPN.com that Orlando is acquiring Rafer Alston from Houston to fill the void created at point guard by Jameer Nelson’s shoulder injury.

The Rockets will receive Memphis guard Kyle Lowry, Orlando forward Brian Cook and perhaps two other minimum-salaried players to make the finances work.

The Grizzlies will receive a first-round pick from Orlando.

"Fun" and "Failure" both start out the same way.

by Marie on Feb 19, 2009 3:09 PM EST reply actions

Cook is part of the deal!

"Fun" and "Failure" both start out the same way.

by Marie on Feb 19, 2009 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Hey its definitely an upgrade but I dont know about the idea of losing next year’s 1st rounder. At least Smith had the balls to pull a deal and not salvage what has become an incredible year. Obviously we weren’t going to get it done with our current PG situation, hopefully this turns out to be a blessing!

by jaydee617 on Feb 19, 2009 3:14 PM EST reply actions

I agree...

especially since we would have a lower-tier selection anyways

by jaydee617 on Feb 19, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly what I was thinking

Most projections had us taking Nick Calathes and I think that’s only because of the Florida connection. I’m OK with the pick being shipped since we basically drafted Rafer Alston, who is better than any point guard in the upcoming draft.

by big aaron on Feb 19, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

He's not better than Nick Calathes, but I digress.

I highly doubt Calathes would fall to Orlando anyway.

Former Senior Writer for DePaul's Scout.com website

This came out of nowhere

And I mean nowhere! I didn’t think Houston would be shopping their first-choice point guard, especially with Knee-Mac going down for the rest of the year.

Maybe we somehow snuck through Von Wafer too, since he’s been shockingly good this year. He lit up the Lakers last month something sick.

by big aaron on Feb 19, 2009 3:18 PM EST reply actions

I am so surprised right now

"Fun" and "Failure" both start out the same way.

by Marie on Feb 19, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I knew that a trade was in the works but I didn't know it would be for Alston.

Like I said above, if you scroll up a bit, I knew that GM Otis Smith was on the phones but I never was told which players, specifically, were being discussed. It’s a moot point now but nevertheless, it looked like a trade was going to happen.
