With Gortat pretty much being a "goner" one way or another, who would you want in return?

It seems recently that Marcin Gortat hasn't been getting as many minutes as he used to (and as he would like) and has expressed that he is unhappy with it. It really just seems that Gortat will be a goner possible (and hopefully only after) after this post-season. It's no secret that several teams are looking for a starting center that is of Gortat's skillset, but what would it take to make Otis happy to let him go? What would it take to make YOU as a fan happy (or at least satisfied) with what we could recieve in return? C'mon, it's just for fun.

For this scenario, I will be using the ESPN-NBA.com's Trade Machine to try to match salaries and PER.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ylh6dk4

This link is not working for some reason but I suggested that:

MGortat/ AJohnson/ AFoyle/ BBass

in exchange to LAC for:

MCamby/ STelfair/ possible fillers

- Camby is getting up there in age (35) but the dude can still rebound and swat shots with the best of them. Sebastian Telfair (to me) is a poor man's Jameer Nelson, both in size, age and playing style. Marcus Camby has 1 yr left on his current contract which will expire after this season. If Marcin Gortat and the boys were traded for Camby during this current season, we would have $9.1M off the books. Obviously if this traded happened in the offseason, we could probably have a sign-and-trade deal in which we might be able to sign the veteran Camby to a lesser-decent sized contract to back-up Dwight Howard. I included Bass into the scenario not only to match the salaries but I feel like he just does not fit as well in our system (my opinion only). LAC would also need a young PF to back-up Blake Griffin.

- Sebastian Telfair would be a decent back-up for Jameer Nelson. He runs the floor in a similar manner and can score the ball as well. AJ would be sent in the deal because he has a contract that will match and we would have too many PGs on our team (if we keep JWill).

- In the end, there may be better scenarios than this but we would have an athletic defensive minded C who can hit the mid-range shot (at a decent price) and a solid back-up PG who is somewhat similar to our starting PG. LAC gets a young center to usher in the Blake Griffin era in Clipper Nation, a few expiring veterans, and a solid young back-up to Blake Griffin. Gortat would get his playing time and a big city (which he likes) and Bass gets quality reserve time behind their best player.

ORL: Nelson/ Carter/ Pietrus/ Lewis/ Howard -- Telfair/ Redick/ Barnes/ Anderson/ Camby -- Williams

LAC: Davis/ Gordon/ Thornton/ Griffin/ Gortat -- Collins (Johnson)/ RDavis/ Butler/ Bass/ Kaman -- Foyle/ Jordan

Thoughts?

including bass is too much

dont really know what we need right now but i heard, the warriors and wizards are unloading some good players. butler might be traded from the wizards and anthony randolf and morrow might be traded from the warriors.

ooo, I do like Caron...

but I think if Gortat goes, he’ll have to be replaced with another back-up C that will fit our play style.

Gortat won't net Randolph or Butler.

Maybe Morrow but that deal wouldn’t make sense for either party. Trading Bass wouldn’t be smart, either.

if there is any center in the league that id like to back up d12

its hasheem thabeet. acquiring thabeet and rudy gay’s expiring contract for bass and redick, gortat is reasonable for me. just an opinion…

then we have nelson,carter,gay,lewis,d12 and williams, pietrus, barnes, ryan, thabeet…

Thabeet and Gay for Bass, Redick, and Gortat would never happen.

Nor does it make much sense, especially for the Magic.

Portland fan here

make us an offer … be fair about it… What would it take to get Gortat and/or Bass? Rex is probly off limits considering the PG situation in P-town is rather dicey.

Realistically I don't see us doing much with either of our rosters given

the sheer amount of forwards both team’s have.

Given this, for fun, I would do straight up Gortat and a second for Bayless and a first. I’m really on the “Bass can play C for 15 minutes a game” bandwagon, so I would want to keep him.

What do you think?

by fwedo on Dec 19, 2009 4:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

although Gortat would really help

hmmmm…. so tough to let go of Rex. I’ll counter offer you Blake,Webster and a #2. Blake is an expiring contract so that’s as sweet as I can unless you have something else in mind. Sounds like Gortat is going to get his wish so I don’t see the Magic having the leverage here.

I'm looking at Bayless' numbers and Gortat + second isn't fair.

Jerryd has been playing like a borderline All-Star, though the sample size is small. I think, theoretically, it’d take Gortat + 1st + (insert something else here) to snag a kid like Bayless. Plus, given Jerryd Bayless’ caliber, he could definitely give Jameer Nelson a run for his money.

This trade doesn't seem worth it or necessary in season.

I’d rather see Gortat go out the door next summer for a player and a pick. i.e. SAC’s first and Francisco Garcia maybe. And chase old man Camby with vet min or BAE type money and promise him he’ll get a ring when ORL repeats.

If we go in-season, I’m still partial to a package for Boozer (but I know Eddy will say that’s a dumb idea…and he’s usually right).

Well, Gortat will probably go out the door next summer when it becomes easier to trade him.

No reason to go for a PF

Not with Rashard playing the 4, and not with Bosh not really being a big outside shooter. We’d need to trade Rashard and redesign our offense for that to make any sense, and there ain’t nobody out there taking Lewis’ contract off us.

I love this trade in the sense that I bet Marcus Camby would be a better backup to Dwight and even a better player to put along with Dwight if we need to go ultra big to combat the likes of Boston and LÁ’s big men. I feel like Camby is a vet that would appreciate the rest he would get playing behind/with Dwight and in the playoffs really step it up. So I really like that part.
What I don’t like is getting Telfair, who the Magic would’ve tried to get this summer if they had any interest to begin with. The other part I really don’t like is losing Bass. It doesn’t seem fair to lose both Gortat and Bass, two young great players, for a vet. Foyle and AJ are no problems to include in the trade. Foyle/Gortat do have a trade veto power tho I think, so you have to get a min. contract player instead of Foyle or see if they’’re ok with it. Getting fillers from LAC would be a must if we lost both Bass/Gortat, or really even one of them, and would be a nice plus (a solid, unprotected pick).

Nope.

Check this Hoopdata link. He’s converting inside this year (62%, which is awesome) but hadn’t in prior years. And check his jump shooting. Terrible. He’s similar to Nelson in size and quickness, I guess, but their skills aren’t similar at all. Nelson’s a scorer first, second, and third, while Telfair’s more of a distributor.

Apparently they're in the market for one.
The Nuggets’ front office is looking into acquiring a big man who could play some minutes off the bench. But right now, the Nuggets just aren’t the same without all five starters. Billups is shooting for a return in the next game, Wednesday at home against Atlanta.

Another article suggested a trade with Detroit

For me that would be the most dramatic improvement to our starting 5. The proposed trade is Tayshaun, Atkins, $3 mill cash & an unprotected 1st rd pick for AJ, JJ & Bass.

I would much rather include Gortat and keep Bass because of Brandon’s well rounded game.

What it would do for Orl is give us a versatile 3 with huge length and a plethora of offensive weapons. It would move Pietrus back to the backup 2 spot like last season. The negative is that JJ & Bass are Orl best offensive bench players. Losing both JJ & Bass would deliver a hit to our depth but Pietrus moving to the backup 2 would soften the blow.

For me, if that trade was available, as a Magic fan I would jump on it. Tayshaun at the 3 and Pietrus back at the backup 2 would put Orl over the top in my opinon.

Starting 5 – Jameer, VC, Tayshaun, Rashard & Howard
Second Unit – J. Williams, Pietrus, Barnes, Anderson & Gortat

Think about it, Orl is one of the deepest teams in the NBA & have basically 4 All-Stars out of the starting 5. The only way Orl can improve their team is by improving the 3 spot with someone better than Pietrus. Tayshaun is that guy and it would allow MP to move back to his best position Shooting Guard.

by Warlando on Dec 21, 2009 2:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Indeed he has

but he has played all 82 games in each of the past 6 seasons prior to this season. Back injury though? Should it raise a red flag? T-Mac anyone?

A healthy Tayshaun is a better starting 3 than Pietrus for Orlando. A back injury and nearing 30 does sound scary. Gortat won’t be moved until the off season anyway so there will be time to see how Tayshuan comes back from the injury.

Thinking more about Tayshaun’s age and the thought of giving up JJ for Prince as a short-term fix. VC is nearing 34 and is still playing at a high level. Will Tayshuan not be as good the next 4 years as he’s been the past 6 years?

by Warlando on Dec 21, 2009 4:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't trust players with back injuries.

I do like Price but not in this trade scenario. Trading young for old, in this case, isn’t smart.

My thoughts:

First, it would be preferable to trade Gortat to the West. I’d rather face him as little as possible. Second, we can’t trade him to Dallas this season. Third, if we trade Gortat, our weakest position is SF, so preference should be given to that position. Working down the list:

Golden State – Azubuike is interesting to me
LA Clippers – I’d like Thornton, but I doubt the Clips would trade him
LA Lakers – No. Just no.
Phoenix – Dudley’s sniping could make him useful, but we’d actually need to take on another player as well.
Sacramento – i can haz omri casspi?
Houston – With only 2 SFs, I don’t think they’d deal anything we’d be interested in.
Memphis – The Grizz won’t trade Gay, and I wouldn’t take Carroll or Young.
New Orleans – Ugh. Peja’s one-dimensional, Wright doesn’t fit, and Posey’s hideously overpaid
San Antonio – Nothing we should want.
Denver – After Carmelo, their SF position is worse than ours. Nobody worth grabbing at the 3. Besides, they have Nene and Birdman, so their need for a center is low.
Minnesoder – They’ve got too tall and too small, but nobody who’s just right.
Oklahoma – The only SF on their roster is Durant.
Portland – If Outlaw were healthy, I’d suggest trying to get Webster or Batum. With Outlaw’s broken foot, I don’t think that’ll be possible.
Utah – C.J. Miles might be worth looking at.

In short, if we’re aiming for a SF (which I think we should), the logical targets are Golden State, Phoenix, Sacramento, or Utah. Portland would be a flyer if we can convince them they need insurance for Oden more than they need insurance for Outlaw after Travis returns.

If Corey Brewer shot 40% from 3-point

He would be an awesome fit for Orlando at the 3 spot. SVG would do wonders for Corey’s career.

by Warlando on Dec 21, 2009 4:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't realize Tayshaun was almost 30.

I thought he was around 27. Yeah I guess it would be a short term fix and then we would have VC, Rashard & Tayshaun all 30 or older.

If we could get a better 3 than Pietrus so we can move him back to the backup 2 and only have to give up some bench I’m all for it. Pietrus is a good 3 but Orl is lethal when he’s coming off the bench at the 2.

I’m content with the current team especially when Jameer is back 100% healthy but if we could improve any position it’s the starting 3 spot which in-turn would improve the backup 2 spot as well. Numbers would suggest JJ is the better backup 2 but JJ can’t defend at anywhere near the level Pietrus can so on a team of shooters I’ll take the better defender in Pietrus.

Yeah I kinda figured it would be

Jameer & VC for Wade and Chalmers? Would Orl have to send more to Miami than that? What if they included Gortat too? Leave Bass as Howard’s backup. I’m not sure what Otis expects to get for Gortat but I imagine he wants to package him in a deal to either improve the 3 or the 2 if the opportunity presented itself.

Orl would get 2 young players and Miami would get 2 young players in addition to an older but still very good VC.

by Warlando on Dec 21, 2009 7:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

We kinda discussed this around the time Wade made comments about wanting to play with Dwight

If he could play with anyone.

It’s just really, really unlikely that Miami trade us Wade. They’re far, far too close to be giving up that sort of a player for a retreaded Carter and good-but-not great players. They’re no closer to winning a division title with Nelson and Carter than they are now, and they’ll make us insanely good. Will they set up half a decade of being dominated for Vince Carter and Marcin Gortat? I just don’t see it.

Gortat’s going west in the summer, unless something remarkable happens.

Unless Miami traded him before the trade deadline...

Which they would never do, the only way we could get him would be in a sign-and-trade deal, so the long term contract should already be tied up.

Don’t get me wrong, if there’s any way we can package Carter + Bass/Gortat/someone to Miami for Wade, we do it in a heartbeat. I just can’t see the Heat going for it, no matter what Otis offers them.

Gortat is going nowhere befor the season is over

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=14759

From Hoopsworld:
It is very unlikely that the Magic trade Gortat because he is subject to base year compensation. Because his salary increased by twenty percent from one season to the next in Orlando, he becomes very difficult to trade.

If Orlando wants to deal Gortat, they can only bring back a player worth fifty percent what he is currently making. This season, he is making $5,854,000 so the Magic can only exchange him for a player worth $2,927,000. This makes it nearly impossible to get equal value for Gortat

by NC Magic Fan on Dec 23, 2009 6:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Dont forget that AJ is not too important with a healthy Jameer. So add AJ to any deal with Gortat and you have about 4.9mil to deal with. Also, Gortat is probly ready to say yes to any deal almost… anything for more than 8 minutes.. Im not really for trading Gortat this season however, I think we need him because Dwight gets fouls too much in the playoffs, he needs a good backup.
