Poll: Best Orlando Magic Dunker in the Decade

With Dwight Howard's alley-oop dunk from Vince Carter against the Indiana Pacers a few days ago fresh in the minds of Magic fans, as well as the comments from Austin Burton of Dime Magazine (that Howard is one of the best alley-oop dunkers in the NBA right now) and Brad Graham of SLAM ONLINE (that Carter's dunk over Frederic Weis was the best dunk of the decade) relevant at the moment, I got to thinking.

Who is the best dunker in the decade for Orlando?

With the year 2009 coming to a close, I figured it was a question worth asking. In my opinion, there's only two clear cut choices but I'll include an 'Other' option.

Let the debate begin.

A little off topic but: is that off-the-glass self pass still legal?

i always felt like that pass Tmac used to make to himself for a dunk was kind of iffy. but i guess that since the ball touches the glass backboard, then he is again eligible to touch it (just as if he had passed it to a player and the player touched it back). whereas, if air-balled it and caught it again, it would be a self pass. can anyone help me out on what the ruling with that is now in the league? i havent seen it done in a while.

btw, in my opinion, Dwight is the better dunker. my only reasoning, he gets so much higher on the jump than Tmac did and he finishes with so much more power. nobody in the world dunks like Dwight, im surprised the baskets hold up sometimes.

Unless the ball's over the cylinder, it should still be legal:

Rule 10.XIII.d: “If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor. If he drops the ball while in the air, he may not be the first to touch the ball.”
Rule 10.XIII.g: “A player may not be the first to touch his own pass unless the ball touches his backboard, basket ring or another player.”

Assuming I’m reading those correctly, it’s OK to pass off the backboard, but it would have to be shot before taking a step.

D12’s top 2 dunks are just amazing!

Most definitely.

That play against the Spurs is still one of the highlights of the decade. That just doesn’t happen.

Yeah, I'll never forget either of those.

Dwight Howard’s dunk against the Boston Celtics is one of the best in-game dunks I’ve ever seen.

The look on Pierce's face...

Priceless. He tried to grab at the ball before Dwight caught it, and he just looked flabbergasted after Dwight put it down.

T-Mac's ability to create for himself in traffic gives him the nod, imo

But I think T-Mac is the best wing/transition dunker and Dwight the best in the post and alley-oop. Really hate to have to choose.

Even though Dwights dunks are thunderous..

I’d have to vote for T-Mac, his dunks are more graceful because he’s dribbled through the opponents defense

T-Mac by a small margin.

His dunks were just beautiful to watch. That dunk contest back in 2000 with Vince and Steve Francis was still the best dunk contest I’ve ever seen, because all 3 could’ve won it almost any other year. Vince was just on another level at the time,

Even though he wasn't on the Magic at the time...

The dunk he had while on the Raptors against the Bulls’ Kornell David, where he rode him like a burro… That’s still my 2nd favorite dunk of all-time behind Vince’s dunk on Dikembe his rookie year. Also, that dunk T-Mac had in the all-star game was so ridiculous, he had the crazy angle and went sideways and everything.

Yeah, Tracy McGrady started a trend with the backboard dunk once he did it.

I could care less about McGrady

I wasn’t involved in the Magic during his tenure and thus didn’t care when he left. Now, I don’t like Shaq, but just because I dislike him doesn’t mean I, nor anybody else, is a pathetic bitter former-fan out for revenge and has nothing better to do with their time than moan about the glory days. You like him, but your constant condescension towards those who do is getting ridiculous. And so is my overreaction to your initial comment RAARGH NDFSKNHDFK

I'm a girl.

I don't mind if people don't like Tracy McGrady.

Doesn’t bother me. I just like to understand the rationale behind the sentiment.

Whoever voted for Dwight (and no offense to him) are obviously still bitter about TMac

Because McGrady’s dunks were absolutely spectacular, and there were better ones from him that weren’t in that video. Dwight is 6-11 and can leap with the best of them like we all already know but at 6-8, T-Mac can finish over players taller than him (ex: Shawn Bradley) and can finish well with either hand. This shouldn’t even be a debate because T-Mac is just more flexible in the air than Dwight, if that makes any sense. Plus, T-Mac doesn’t have the mass that Dwight has, so whenever he takes it to the rack, it takes a little more effort than Dwight since Dwight is usually already in the paint.

T-Mac gets the nod from me.

Nobody did Bradley in like T-Mac a few years ago.

Out of the thousands of dunks over the Straw Man, his was the nastiest.

No, it's not, but Tracy McGrady embarrassed him ..

.. so much that Kevin Harlan commented that he “sucked the gravity right out of the building.”

I went with Dwight

T-Mac obviously was/is a great dunker however VC, Kobe, Jason Richardson, Wade, etc. are all great dunkers. I went with Dwight for the simple reason that he is a Center and he’s the only one who can get up like that. The top 2 from Dwight’s HL are ridiculous. A great dunk missing from the HL is the facial he served up to Ratliff. If you want to compare dunks from dunk contests I’ll take Dwight over T-Mac yet again. The self pass from Dwights 2nd slam dunk contest, the superman dunk and his dunk in the 3rd slam dunk contest where he threw it off of the side of the backboard and wound up for a savage throwdown are all better than any of T-Mac’s dunks in my opinion.

that was the nest dunk ever

i REALLY WISHED HE WOULD HAVE SAVED THAT DUNK FOR THE FINAL ROUND, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN A SHOE IN FOR VICTORY!

I went with Dwight Howard....

The man is a beast….he by far is a better dunker than T Mac simply because of the variety of dunks…the spin move, the hammer, the out of bounds alley oop, and my all time favorite…when he stole that alley oop and jammed it down with so much authority…my wife and mother in law stood up in amazement…

Dunk contest dunks show his creativity….the kiss the rim, sticker dunk, 12 foot rim and Superman (which I am still debating if it was a dunk…but boy was it amazing!!!) so in my eyes…Dwight is better…

They have two very different styles

Dwight is about post positioning and going vertical for the alley-oop. T-Mac is about the dribble drive and body angle. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.

Man

T-Mac was frigging awesome. Still wish we hadn’t traded him, even with the injury woes that have hit him. Probably my favorite Magic player all time right there. Gotta go with him on the dunk contest as well, just because of his ability to create his own highlight dunk off the dribble. It is a lot closer than I thought though, Dwight is a very close second.
