Tonight's Game: Miami Heat at Orlando Magic

Eddy already told you the buzz about tonight's matchup between the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat, and I don't have much to add, except that the Heat have kind-of dropped off a cliff. As Basketball Prospectus predicted, Miami hasn't maintained its elite defense with which it started the season. About the only thing it still does well on that end is guard the three-point line: the Heat are 4th in eFG% defense.

The Magic will probably not bother trying to stop Dwyane Wade, who's tortured them in each of the last few seasons. Instead, they'll look to shut down the Heat's secondary options, chiefly second-year combo forward Michael Beasley.

On offense, the Magic should stick with their three-point-happy offense, but should also work the ball inside to Dwight Howard if the three-balls aren't falling. Jermaine O'Neal is an excellent defensive center, but he can be beat. After him, it's Joel Anthony and Jamaal Magloire. Get him in foul trouble, or winded, and go to work from there.

Tip's at 7:30. See you then.

Let's win!

3 out of 4 this week with a statement win over Atlanta would be awesome-

Bucs: Raheem will become relevant when his actions speak louder than his words. Gators: National Champions! Magic: Stop getting injured!

D-Wade's flirting is such a tease listening to that newspiece on PTI

I would love to see him on the Magic, but I cant imagine Otis pulling up the dough…even though it is oh so tempting.

There's no real way for it to happen, short of a sign and trade.

And if the Heat go through with a sign and trade, I somehow doubt it’ll be with their in-state rivals, especially given that said rivals are title contenders.

I’m sure Wade knows this. I call mind games.

I still feel like two of the three main FAs this year, LeBron, Wade and Bosh, end up together somewhere. No idea where, though. If the Knicks manage to deal Eddy Curry somehow, I’m almost ready to call it — though I might suspect league intervention in a case like that. I honestly wouldn’t care, though… as a basketball fan, some part of me wants to see those guys playing in D’Antoni’s system, and as a Long Island native, some part of me wants to see the Knicks do well.

As a Magic fan, of course, I’d rather not. But if it does happen, there is one big question mark to look at: the Cavs and Heat are two of the slowest teams in the game. Honestly, I don’t worry about that if I’m LeBron — that guy can dominate at any speed — but is Wade still Wade in a D’Antoni-style offense?

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Threes are worth three!

I’m seriously beginning to think twos aren’t even worth taking, unless they’re dunks or open lay-ups. I mean, as a change of pace, sure. But as an efficient shot? Sure, sometimes you get fouled on twos, but the vast majority of turnovers happen on attempts to get the ball inside, or on attempts to extricate the ball from inside.

Okay, maybe not THAT seriously. But tonight? Bringing the ball inside has led to nothing but disaster. Just shoot the three if you have the three.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Halftime thought...

Im all in for the Wade to Orlando campaign but not if its going to ruin our team as a whole. I’d hate to lose Gortat and MP and if Jameer has to go with it, I dont think Dwight will be too pleased about it.

It most likely would have to concern VC and Gortat along with some picks correct?

If it happens, it happens…if not, in Otis I trust (and of course God too foremost)

I just dont see why not though...

Wade himself said he wants to play with Dwight, now theres no way in hell Dwight goes to MIA lets get that straight.

But if he wants to come to Orlando, why wouldn’t MIA honor his request? I know we’re divisional/conference/state rivals but MIA obviously is going to have to rebuild sooner or later.

and he makes a good point when he said: I said from Day One that I wanted to be in Miami, that maybe I could get certain players to come to Miami, but at the same time, this is my only chance at free agency," Wade said. “There are a lot of possibilities out there. And nothing is impossible.”

why does dwight argue with refs when he fouls someone?he clearly fouled o,neal on his third foul and argued as he walked away.

The last thing we need is Carter being encouraged to take the ball anywhere.

Obviously, Carter is a part of this offense — a major part. But he’s taking way too many isos, often when there’s no reason to stop the ball from moving. He’s going to do it enough on his own, he doesn’t need to be encouraged to do it more.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Stupid shot for Pietrus.

I can live with Lewis’ shot — it was way off, but normally that’s a shot we want from Lewis. A 20-footer from the corner is not a shot we EVER want from ANYONE.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Don't get ahead of yourself here.

Remember, we’re barely beating Miami. (And Williams’ +/- is -1 at this point. Yeah, AJ has a +6.)

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Sigh . . . Now I need new AVATAR!

by blue-blood on Nov 25, 2009 9:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It's not a matter of "mistakes".

Sometimes it’s just a matter of finding, or not finding, or (indeed) not CREATING the open man. J-Will has played well, but he doesn’t have the court vision or the rapport with the offense that we need from a point guard. This is certainly understandable to an extent — he just got here. But the simple fact is, his offense has not been flowing right since Nelson got hurt.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Yeah, his shot is falling.

I just a) don’t think he gives us much when his shot isn’t falling, and b) don’t believe his shot is going to keep falling like this. He’s definitely a solid backup, and I agree he’s better than Johnson, but I’ve noticed a lot of disrespect for Nelson lately, and it irks me. That’s all.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

On offense, it's close.

Shard is better, but Ryan is moving up. This line could get awfully blurry.

On defense, though? There’s no comparison? Shard has developed into a great defensive player, while Ryan has a long way to go on that.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

It's not Dwight's problem.

Yeah, it would be nice if he made his free throws. But we’ve had three consecutive threes by Pietrus, and why is Pietrus so prominent in the offense at this point? He’s not one of our better scorers, and he’s been off tonight.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

The Magic won this game 98-97. They didn't blow the lead. They won the game.

True but irrelevant. If they called the offensive interference then the game is over.

And IF the team hadn't blown an 11 point lead by allowing a 16-0 run, the game would have been over.

Come on, man, don’t let one call (out of MANY tonight that were wrong) cloud your judgement into thinking the refs stole the game from us. The team did everything in their power to blow it on their own. Let’s lay blame where it is deserved.

There can always be credit and blame spread all over the place.

BUT ON THE LAST PLAY OF THE GAME, WITH EVERYTHING ON THE TABLE, THE REFS MISSED THE MOST IMPORTANT CALL.

If Jason made the free throws Miami still could have tied it up with a three and won it in OT. If the refs made that call at the end the game was over.

I'm not blaming this on the refs...this is all on the players...

They have to step it up. J-Will choked when it mattered most.

The refs have to step up. They blew the call with a second left.

Stop blaming the refs ONLY. There is plenty of blame to go around for tonight's loss...

…and I’m one to quickly denounce bad officiating.

I'm blaming them for a one point loss instead of a one point win.

The Magic played poorly regardless, but the refs are the difference between a win and a loss in the final seconds.

I would rather lose a game won by luck to MIA than to lose to BOS on national TV

In the end, I believe we still won the last 11 of 13 vs. MIA and we’re still #2 in the EC, MIA is now #6. Oh well, on to Atlanta.

We need more from Rashard Lewis. 3-15 is not good enough.

Also, 3-5 from D12, again due to foul trouble. Those 2 guys should be leading the team, I’m gonna get nervous if we are going to rely more and more on Vince Carter to win games.

Dwights foul trouble is starting to get alil worrisome indeed. I think Lewis will be shooting good soon.

There is no excuse for 5 shots over 35 minutes.. VC played less minutes than howard and scored 22 points. Ryan Anderson played for HALF the amount of time that Howard played and shot the ball 7 times.

Carter is turning into a black hole

I guess he’s forgetting there’s guys on this team that made it to the Finals without him. It seems like the more he asserts himself the more Lewis fades into the background.

Does anyone know his assist avg?

Horrible rebounding and boxing out. You kno Dwight boxes his man, but if the shot is in the air you need to get up and rebound irregardless so you kind of expect Dwight to not let those O rebounds happen and the other Magic frontcourt players to put up some semblace of rebounding and box out effort. Tho the Magic effort wasn’t there all game to begin with. I think they’ll bounce back tomorrow night.

Continue to defend D12 with abstract stats. Plain and simple he isn’t getting it done.

I think his per minute stats are about the same. Problem is he should not be getting baited into foul trouble this much like he was some kind of project center and when he did an OK job of foul management just a few some months back last season. He has to avoid the flopping of others.

I hear the per minute argument

but he is most physically gifted player at C. he needs to dominate and it just isn’t happening.

If I am 7 feet and I am more athletic than anyone close to me in height, I am going for 30 a game. Heart

I hate to agree

But yeah, Dwight’s really starting to frustrate me. He’s not making any adjustments at all, and he continues to whine instead of just playing ball. Yes, some bad calls are going against him that other superstars would get (Wade had 2 or 3 times where he leaned almost at a 45 degree angle into the defender in the air and got the whistle), but that’s the life of a dominant big man. Except you need to be dominant when the calls aren’t taking you out of the game, and Dwight just is not doing that more than 5-10 minutes a game. He’s riding the bench far too often, not allowing the team to get into rhythm on either end.

At some point he needs to take responsibility for his own actions and be this leader he kept on talking about.

Miami’s interior defense was stout.
