Marcin Gortat
I thought Gortat was as good as gone in the offseason; It came as somewhat of a shock to me that they decided to match the Mavs offer to keep him. With that in mind, will the Magic decide to keep Gortat, knowing that they will be paying a large sum of money for a back up, but thinking if they are going to make a serious run for the championship he is worth the money, and then possibly move him in the offseason, or will the Magic try to deal him mid-season. What teams would make a strong push for him, and what in return will the Magic ask for? I would love to hear some thoughts, and if a mid-season trade were to occur what will we get in return?

for me
i think its nice for us to trade gortat and aj to the hornets for darren collison plus a center.
what we do in life echoes in eternity
I would take ...
a PF/C and a young, tall PG in return.
Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.
if this was possible
I would be on board, but I don’t see it happening..

I think they'd try to do a bit better than that.
Turiaf’s a year older than Gortat and not nearly as good. They could certainly do worse… but they could also do better.
I’m also wondering if Bass might be a better trade chip than Gortat.

I'd regret moving Brandon so quickly.
I think people need to be patient with Bass.

I'm being patient, but I honestly don't know what he can do at this point.
I mean, he’s never going to be able to stretch the floor. He’s an efficient mid-rage scorer, but he’s never going to be able to stretch the floor. That’s strike 1.
He’s probably a better rebounder than we’ve seen so far, but he was a mediocre rebounder in Dallas, so it’s not like he’s going to become a double-digit kind of guy now. Strike 2.
Which leaves what, defense? I guess Bass has a reputation as a good defender, so that’s the thing he could actually grow into. Clearly, he’s not grasping/can’t execute the Magic’s defensive schemes at this point, so there’s a question mark, but he narrowly avoids a third strike.
Even so… you have to ask, is that his ceiling? A defensive specialist who causes the team trouble on the offensive end? I don’t see that guy being worth Bass’ salary.
Or to put it another way, the one thing I’ve been legitimately impressed by so far is Bass’ efficient scoring. But that scoring isn’t in a form that really suits the Magic. Or to put it differently, Bass’ skill set is worth more to a team which wants a 2-point-shooting PF than it is to the Magic. (It’s like the reverse of Lewis, where his strengths and weaknesses are perfectly attuned to what the team needs.)
When a guy’s skill set is less valuable to the team he’s playing for than it is to most other teams, that’s at least the foundation of a hypothetical trade. Q.E.D.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
I was thinking the same, with how well Anderson has been playing, and Barnes being as strong of a rebounder as he is, would Bass be the trade bait come mid-season. I like this team a lot, and I hope we keep all peices, so far it seems like they just need to jell more defensively, I don’t see a reason for a trade, as long as the team can stay healthy. Either way, it should def. be another good season.

I think it's pretty definite that we're not trading Ryan or Barnes...
…and only MOSTLY definite we’re not trading Bass. After the season, all bets are off, but for now…
To be honest, I don’t see a mid-season trade happening at all, unless injuries absolutely demand it. The Magic built this team pretty deliberately, and with injury resistance in mind. Look at the results — we’ve been hit about as hard by injuries as is possible, and we’re still 11-3. You never want to bring in a guy who wasn’t around for the pre-season if you can avoid it, and I think the Magic can avoid it.

Gortat definitely won't be traded until the off-season, at the earliest.
Even then, it depends on how the Magic fare during the year.

He's here for this season
No point trading away such an important piece and have to try and fit a new guy in at the deadline with the playoffs looming. We know how god Gortat can be.
In the summer, I expect to see him be moved on, though.
He’s stayin for the season.
I highly doubt we’re trading him this season. We need someone to back up Dwight when he gets in foul trouble. Adonal Foyle is a top guy but he isn’t good enough anymore to be a second center. There’s also the face that he’s injured. There’s no one else we could play at center. We don’t have any forwards who are strong enough to play center except bass who however just isn’t tall enough. We need Gortat this season.
Next season i wouldn’t mind him being traded to Houston who showed interest in him this off-season for Battier. Battier’s a career 39% 3 point shooter and a relentless defender who’d be great against Pierce, Lebron or Kobe. People said Pietrus did a great job against Lebron during the East finals but is holding him to 39 points, 8 assists and 8 rebounds per game really that good?
That'd be a bad trade, in my opinion.
You’ll be trading a starting-quality center in his prime on a reasonable contract for an aging wing defender who doesn’t pose much of a threat, offensively. As for Mickael Pietrus, ignore the numbers that LeBron James puts up – it’s the fact that he makes him work hard for all of his points that matters ultimately.

I dont think backup PG is even as important as backup C. Id rather get a premier defensive wing to start like Prince and possibly Battier. Thats about it. We’ll have to wait and see if Bass develops defensively over time, I think he’s a possible trade chip instead like Ben said too.
Agreed
The back up PG isn’t as important, unless you’re playing with the magic in 2K10. I always tire out Meer wayyy to fast.

It’s hard to see Gortat being traded this season. It would leave a huge hole behind Dwight Howard. Marcin is the only true interior player defensively/offensively on the roster besides Howard. It would make the Magic very small and more vulnerable on the boards + defensively. I don’t think the Magic can afford to lose Gortat this season without finding a suitable replacement in the process.
However, I can’t see Gortat finishing that contract with the Magic … he will be traded at some point … It’s just too much money to pay a player who’s getting only 15-18 minutes a night.
I can almost guarantee that Marcin will be traded during the upcoming off-season.

whoever the magic decide to move w gortat, i'd like to see them acquire a starting SF
and have pietrus coming off the bench.
i might be alone here, but i’d be willing to part with several guys (redick, bass, AJ, gortat) for a good starting SF. of course, we’d need some decent guys to replace anyone who leaves.
gerald wallace is probably aiming too high, and he's working great with s-jax
but he would be awesome. jason richardson maybe? jeff green?
generally speaking, SF is probably the weakest position in the league. besides center.
so many of the good ones are injury prone or inconsistent: granger, maggette, azubuike, dunleavy, butler, marion, salmons…
Ooh, ooh! Jason Richardson!
3s and dunks! No D, but 3s! And dunks!

Problem is, the Magic have too much salary committed elsewhere.
I don’t understand people’s obsession with constantly fine-tuning the roster (trade Jameer, he’s hurt; trade Brandon, he isn’t playing). Yeah, it’ll need tweaks here and there along the way, but it’s fine just the way it is.

It's becoming increasingly obvious that Matt Barnes and Mickael Pietrus are killing them offensively

Pietrus is Pietrus.
He’s not “killing” anyone offensively. He’s not helping, mostly because of his refusal to pass, but he doesn’t take enough shots to have a major negative effect on the offense.
As for Barnes, yeah, he’s been in a slump. But he’s better than what we’ve seen from him.
Basically, either one of them is the fifth option out there on offense. They’re both solid defenders, Barnes provides strong rebounding for a SF, and the last thing we need is another scorer at the 3. It’s been a delicate enough balance getting shots for the ones we have. All we need at the 3 is someone who can make open shots and keep defenses honest, while providing strong defensive play. And both Barnes and Pietrus are capable of that.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
You need guys that know their role and play it.
Barnes and Pietrus are those type of guys. They do more good than harm.

While we have an asset in Bass riding the pine. They both can play center so either one is tradeable

I say Center and PG.

how about gortat and bass for aldridge and przybilia?
No way that trade ever happens.

Why would the Blazers
Trade their second best player for a six month rental C? They wouldn’t need Gortat next season any more than we need him this season, it would be absolutely insane to give up Aldridge just to get in Gortat until the end of the season.

And why would the Magic
trade for a guy at a position they don’t even need — a position where we already HAVE too many guys? If we were to trade Gortat (or Bass, or Pietrus, or anyone), we’d be doing it for a SF. A SF is the only thing we even KIND OF need.
Bo Outlaw's name is Charles. Chucky Atkins' isn't.
And a point guard (looking into the future).

Gortat for Bayless? Or Batum?
Either one works for me.
Doubt Portland gives up Batum. He's only 21 and they like him a lot.
Bayless, it seems, is the one they’re trying to move.
Third Quarter Collapse: An Orlando Magic blog at SB Nation | Brandon Bass: "I just play hard."
Yeah, I guess a future backup PG.
I’d even accept a backup SG — someone to replace the free agent Redick, and possibly take over for Vince 2-3 years from now.
Of course, I’d rather just keep the guys we have now, and I suspect the Magic would too.

Otis' objective, soon, will be to replace Carter so he'll be on the lookout for a wing player.
