Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

John Denton reports that Dwight Howard and the rest of the Magic are pretty sick of opponents being able to whack Dwight intentionally with no flagrant or technical fouls called. The article is not to be missed. Dwight's maturity--remember when he narrowly missed getting tossed after pushing Kevin Ollie in a game last year?--shows, as does Stan Van Gundy's vitriolic wit.

I laugh because Van Gundy's comments about Jamaal Magloire are funny, but it's actually a fairly serious issue

This is not an instance of coaches and players whining about borderline calls: the hits against Dwight in question are clearly hits designed to take him out. Although Randolph got called for a flagrant foul, Nocioni got away with dragging Howard down with only a personal. At which point will the league office listen to the Magic’s complaints—Denton mentions that Otis Smith has called several times to complain—and begin punishing teams for their thuggery?

If LeBron James faced the nightly beating Dwight does, you can be sure flagrants would be called and fines would be assessed. This isn’t Marcin Gortat getting pummeled every night. This is Dwight Howard, a superstar, Olympian, and perennial All-Star. Should he not get the benefit of the doubt when he’s intentionally thrown to the floor?

Yeah, too bad he gets away with it the other 99 times out of 100.

But your right, funny to see the almighty King get called for traveling in the closing seconds of a game.

Speaking of getting away with travels...

Has anyone ever noticed that when Johnson gets the ball on an inbound play, he takes two steps before he starts dribbling? This wouldn’t be a travel if he were already in motion before he got the ball, but he is at a stand still, gets the ball, takes two steps and then starts dribbling. I don’t know how much longer he can get away with this. Aye, yay, yay. Where is that third point guard?
