The Magic are willing to talk about rewarding Coach Stan Van Gundy with a contract extension or re-doing his deal completely after the season, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.

Van Gundy’s contract expires after next season and the club has an option for the 2009-10 season.

"We could do something this summer, sure," said Magic Chief Operating Officer Alex Martins. "If it meets the desires of both parties, we can talk about it."

Martins said the Magic could lengthen Van Gundy’s contract or "tear up" his current deal, replacing it with a new one. "Stan has more than exceeded our expectations," Martins said.

Re-Signing coach Stan is more important than re-signing Turk

Yes I said it, and if you dont believe that, you’re a fool.

as much as I love Turk

I agree with you

Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honourably. And Rhaegar died.

Yes......

….SVG is underrated and a damn fine coach….however….

Given his intensity I wonder how well he wear on the team long term. The core guys are young (Dwight/Jameer) or in their prime (Rashard/Hedo) and in 3 of the four cases (all four if Hedo is resigned) can expect a long run with the team. Too often a head coach is better at molding a team then managing it when they reach a level of success.

Stan has shown he can change a teams culture and fit pieces together to make for success. He has shown he can drag a club kicking and screaming to the upper level of the league. The question is….can Stan manage the egos and feelings of an established contender or will the players start to tune him out?

Oh, God

Flashes of Avery Johnson…

Yes, that's a huge difference

Though he is demanding, it doesn’t seem like Stan will alienate his players. Only time will tell, I suppose.

Doubt it. I think the players appreciate the fact that he lets them play.

Sure, he’s hard on them, but they know that he’s just trying to push the absolute best out of them. I respect that from SVG.

I say tear it up...

give him a 3-4 year deal that’s worth MORE than he expects. Anything longer I am skeptical. Coaching is fickle.

The quintessential Van Gundy moment so far this season might have come on Christmas Day. There was a montage on the TV broadcast in the third quarter of Van Gundy contorting his face, holding his head in his hands, doubling over in anguish and generally looking like someone in intense pain over the way his team was playing.

They were beating the New Orleans Hornets by 31 points.

*dies * Great man :)

“He was like ‘AAARGH’ and then ‘Nice catch, eh?’” Lulz :D

Dwight Howard's impersonations of SVG are priceless.

Just hilarious. Any time the Magic play on ESPN, they always find time to show D12 doing his best SVG impersonation.
