Player Comparison #2
It's no secret that Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson has been playing like a man possessed this season. Averaging career-highs across the board statistically, Nelson has truly catapulted his play into a different stratosphere, solidifying himself as a legitimate All-Star caliber player this season. However, Nelson's impressive rise to stardom can't avoid what's about to happen.
I've decided, once again, that I want to play a game.
Below I present two players.
Player A
Season:
Minutes Per Game (31.5)
- 19.5 PPG (per 36 minutes)
- 21.1 PER
- Offensive Rating (122)
- Win Shares (9.8)
Player B
Season:
Minutes Per Game (37.7)
- 20.0 PPG (per 36 minutes)
- 20.8 PER
- Offensive Rating (119)
- Win Shares (11.0)
One of these two players is indeed Jameer Nelson. The other player, however, can not be named. It can be stated that this player, like Nelson, shared a similar home-grown path to the NBA. Both players entered the league at the age of 22. Similarities abound, but differences exist.

Jameer Nelson
2008-2009 Season
- 19.5 PPG (per 36 minutes)
- 21.1 PER
- Offensive Rating (122)
- projected Win Shares (9.8) in 82 games
Anfernee Hardaway
1994-1995 Season
- 20.0 PPG (per 36 minutes)
- 20.8 PER
- Offensive Rating (119)
- Win Shares (11.0) in 82 games
If you guessed Hardaway as the connection to Nelson, congratulations, you have won the game.
But if you didn't, be lucky that the penalty isn't impending death.
Until next time.

I actually guessed Penny as a “haha what a silly fellow I am!”
And then it was him. Penny’s second year though? Whereas Jameer’s in year 5…
Nice job. There's a reason why I chose Penny's 2nd year.
It’s the year the Magic went to the NBA Finals. As such, I felt he & that season would be a good barometer to compare Nelson with and see how each player stacked up against each other.

Very odd
Penny was All-NBA that season too. Don’t think Jameer’s going to get that far…

Doubt it, only because the PG position is so deep.
.. as for Penny. Offensively, Jameer & Penny compare favorably but it’s defensively where Penny has the upper hand (hence a higher Win Shares total).
