Previous Meetings:
November 1st: Magic 121, Kings 103

The Sacramento Kings may have a record that's nearly the total opposite of the Orlando Magic's, but they aren't to be taken lightly. They beat the Lakers earlier this year and are fresh off a fairly convincing win over the Dallas Mavericks in their last outing. The Magic need to be wary. The Kings are playing better defense under new head coach Kenny Natt, who took over for former Magic guard Reggie Theus after Theus was fired earlier this season. Theus was still at the helm the first time these teams met. So, I mean, things have changed. A bit.

Don't get me wrong. The Magic are clearly the superior team and, based on talent alone, they should win this game fairly easily. The problem is that this game is the only game on this four-game road trip that isn't against a legit title contender. If the Magic are looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, they're liable to get themselves embarrassed.

You know me. Always looking for the negative.

(That's not true. Just a realist, friends.)

Tip's really late since the game's on the West Coast. Go Magic, and beware Kevin Martin.

UPDATE: Crack analysis of tonight's game from the Hardwood Paroxysm folks:

IF PUNY KINGS BRING DOUBLE TEAM, HOWARD GIVE TO JAMEER! JAMEER HOWARD'S FRIEND! HE SHOOT LONG WAYS! HEDO SAYS TO TAKE REVENGE ON KINGS FOR NOT WANTING HEDO. HOWARD NO CARE ABOUT HEDO'S CONTRACT HISTORY. HOWARD SMASH! Then Howard go home read Bible. Praise be to the Lord. ... (Howard smash!)

Outstanding.

It's not just K-Mart

Hawes is playing well as of late also.

You are kind of negative

But what do you expect when you care about a team sucks for over a decade. Anyway, I can’t imagine they are looking past the Kings. I’m hoping that their goal is to simply go undefeated on this trip and not to just beat the contenders of the West. Unlike LA and Dallas, Orlando is in a tight conference race where every game seems to matter now.

I expect Orlando to come out to a huge early lead, start playing sloppy in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, and then turn it up a notch in the 4th to beat the Kings by 10-15 points. We’ve seen that scenario quite a few times this season.

You need to look for the negative and keep things real.

Part of being an objective writer.

As for the Magic, they should smash the Kings tonight but nothing is a guarantee in the NBA. That’s the truth.

Eh, forget that

I write for a pretty mediocre D-II athletic program. I look for the positives in everything, even a 35 point blowout.

Eh, probably shouldn't say

Especially being that I’m staying very positive by calling them mediocre.

Hah.

It’s becoming more mainstream (and should be). Raw data just doesn’t cut it anymore when analyzing teams or players. Just my two cents.

I had to cheat...

so I won’t say anything. I had 4 of the players nailed, but number 40 threw me for a loop.

On a side note, in looking at Magic’s all time roster, I totally did not remember Kenny Smith or B.J. Armstrong playing for the Magic.

Ugh .. Kenny Smith.

The vagabond who had the gaul to make a game-tying three pointer to send Game 1 of the NBA FInals to overtime. I know, I know .. Nick Anderson should have made the free throws but I digress.

Magic 7 1/2 point favorites over the Kings

The Magic have not been successful in Sacramento over the years… they have lost 12 of their last 13 games there. Hopefully, that’ll change tonight (as long as the Magic come ready to play, it will), just like in San Antonio last Sunday, where the Magic had lost 16 of their last 18 there prior to Sunday’s win.

This is Dwight’s free throw shooting since his infamous quote (not including tonight):

You know it's a funny thing how

even though I’ve watched the Magic drain countless 3’s over the course of this year, whenever I see them shoot like this I keep thinking “they can’t possibly keep this up” but somehow they do! Anyhow, the Stan Van Gundy in me is satisfied that we’ve got this game in hand so now I can enjoy it :)

Also, I’m watching the Sacramento feed online (in addition to watching the local FSN-cuz I’m a freak like that) and I must say that I really like the Kings announcers! They are giving the Magic mad props and actually seem to be able to appreciate the 3 point tear we’re on. Right now they’re saying we’re legit contenders and giving Howard props! No I'm not joking. Like the kings just suggested, the magic are and should be trying for the record.

The starters can come out in 3 minutes when the record has been beaten.

A record like this isn’t beaten every season, this kind of record gets remembered. Get er done.

If we shoot like this on Thursday . . .

 . . . the Lakers don’t stand a chance!

Also, I think we’ll go 4-0 on this trip! — YES I AM GREEDY!! I can’t help it, I want to see us in 1st place SOOO bad just to see all our haters be forced to Rank us #1 in the Power Rankings.

If we shoot like this...

No one can beat us. Of course, no one can shoot like this every game.

Question. Where exactly is the Southeast Division banner hanging in Amway?

Next to the other division title banners? Or somewhere else.

I know there’s one in the practice facility.

next to the other banners

from where I sit—section 219—if I look to my left, I can see it hanging.

by TheGiantSquid on Jan 14, 2009 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

it looks different b/c the font's changed a little

and the logo, as well. It’s whiter, too, haha but that’s just b/c it’s new and it’s been a while. So it’s a little different.

by TheGiantSquid on Jan 14, 2009 12:11 AM EST up reply actions

at the beginning of the season, it was hanging near the middle of the Arena

and I could only see the side/back of it. Then they moved it to next to the other banners.

I hate to say it

But I got a feeling that they won’t get two more

question.

do i vote for Rashard and Granger or Rashard and Hedo?

to homer or not to homer???

I really like what Gortat

gives us as a back up. He’s no slug. In fact I’d say he’s the exact opposite of Greg Kite! LOL :)

by blue-blood on Jan 14, 2009 12:13 AM EST reply actions

not a great FT shooter

I don’t think I’ve seen him hit one yet. Not that he goes to the line very often…But we love him :3

by TheGiantSquid on Jan 14, 2009 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

It's nothing crazy. Just Shaq and Kite would go at it during practice back in the day.

Obviously Kite is overmatched so he’ll do anything to stop Shaq. Well .. Shaq didn’t like that one time so he just clocked him in the face. Gave him a bloody nose, if I recall correctly.

I take that back.

Ben Wallace is actually the opposite of Greg Kite!

by blue-blood on Jan 14, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

But Gortat needs to let go of the ball right now because the Magic should get that 3 pt recorrd.

I doubt they even know about the record.

And even then Stan wouldn’t care.

Actually, I may do this on Thursday since it's an off-day.

We’ll see. Like I said, my schedule is ridiculous tomorrow so I may not have ample time to formulate a post. Be on the lookout. If it’s not up tomorrow, it’s definitely up Thursday.

Glad you guys will look forward to it, so will I.

This is gonna be the second-most points scored in franchise history

… next to the 155 points the Magic scored against Denver when Skiles broke the assist record

by Mike from Illinois on Jan 14, 2009 12:28 AM EST reply actions

As strong and balanced as the Magic are looking, they probably need another year or two of playoff success before beating the Celtics or LeBrons in a seven-game series. Those two teams play a much more physical style than Orlando … which is why I’m not ready to give up on the Pistons yet. If they continue to recast their new style over the next three months, they have the size and strength to deal with either of the Eastern favorites.
Our next NBA champion is going to come from a pool of four teams. Boston and the Lakers are obvious choices, for their continued success from last season and their obvious repeat or one-step-further mindsets, respectively. Cleveland can draw on its 2007 Finals experience, its roster upgrades and all of LeBron James’ ascendancy since. San Antonio, because playoff basketball is as natural for the Spurs as endorsing checks, seemingly can grab a title every year. And that’s it. Orlando would be in for a too-heady experience to get it done this spring, same as New Orleans if the Hornets pushed deep into the postseason. Every other top team lacks one or more key ingredients.

AWESOME.

I like Van Gundy's response to that:

"I’ve never understood that anyway, people saying, ‘Oh, you’re peaking too early.’ So, as a coach, do I say, ‘OK, guys, don’t play as well today? We don’t really want to play well right now?’ I don’t understand why you can’t play well all year and well in the playoffs.

by funny80sguy on Jan 14, 2009 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

Some stats

Magic: 39 rebounds, 28 assists, 60.5% from the field, 78.3% on FTs, 62.2% on threes, 11 steals, 13 TOs, 2 blocks

Kings: 32 rebounds, 23 assists, 45.1% from the field, 80.6% on FTs, 44.4% on threes, 8 steals, 12 TOs, 1 block

Kings did well in their own right. We just obliterated them with threes :-/

by TheGiantSquid on Jan 14, 2009 12:35 AM EST reply actions

The Magic's offensive rebound pct. won't be too good tonight

… only 5 offensive boards on 32 misses… but everything else the Magic did was freakin’ awesome!

by Mike from Illinois on Jan 14, 2009 12:42 AM EST reply actions

Absolutely

That shows how far I had to reach to find a negative Magic stat… everything else was awesome!

by Mike from Illinois on Jan 14, 2009 12:55 AM EST up reply actions

Oh good lord

Tim Legler on NBA fast break just said that AJ was an asset who could defend bigger guards off the bench. WTF do they just mad lib their comments?

by Swami Digital on Jan 14, 2009 12:50 AM EST reply actions

Tim Legler is an idiot.

Like i’m sorry but his tone is SO condescending. And really he doesn’t know enough about ALL the teams, just a bit about a few that he loves.

by fwedo on Jan 14, 2009 12:59 AM EST up reply actions

I mentioned this last night, but it was interesting to see on the ESPN headline article...

Game notes
Redick connected on four 3-pointers in the first half and two fans in the lower level repeatedly stood and chanted his name after each basket.
