Need at Power Forward

PrintI am a long time BlazerEdger and I have decided to check out some of these other NBA blogs and maybe get a broader base of what is realistic for trade talks. I noticed Magic fans seem to be talking about the need for a power forward in a few of the posts on your site.
How realistic (and I know the sign and trade aspect of the deal would make it a bit tougher in reality) is the idea of a trade with the Blazers for Dooling? Channing Frye might fit your needs at PF and the Blazers would include Steve Blake or Jarrett Jack to match salaries depending on what Dooling is going to sign for and/or which one the Magic are interested in to replace what Dooling brings to the court. The Blazers could even throw in one of those second round picks the Magic are allegedly interested in to make the deal work if they needed to.
What are your thoughts on Dooling and the Blazer players? Is this a trade that could benefit both teams or am overvaluing or undervaluing what Dooling contibutes to the Magic's success?

Great trade if it is Frye and a 2cd. It will be tough to part with Dooling but heck I never liked him much anyway so….

I was going on what I saw in this year's playoffs...
After looking at his career stats, I think the Blazers would be giving up too much. He looks like he would be a nice piece to add but I wouldn’t give up much for him.

Not a Channing Fan
I love his blog, but not his game. He’s simply too soft. Brian Cook is our backup PF. That’s not necessarily bad, but it would be if the backup center sharing the floor with him were Frye. No, thanks.
And, as crazy as it sounds, I prefer Dooling’s defense to Jack’s, uh… whatever it is he does… and Blake’s pass-firstiness.
Frye isnt exactly the 4 we need
Frye is not the bruiser we need in the post. He’s essentially Tony Battie, but worse defensively and better offensively-its a net push. One of the second round forwards-White, Dorsey or Thompson would provide more of the interior toughness we need. Keyon, on the other hand, is the heart and soul of the second unit. He’s our best perimeter defender and one of the best in the league. While Jack seems to be in the Dooling mold and can step in for defensive assignments when Jameer gets overwhelmed (read: BIllups, Chauncey), I think Keyon is more valuable to us for his leadership, especially on a young team with few vocal leaders.
I keep reading that the Blazers want to move their first round pick, especially since they have so many young players. I think a swap of firsts and Jack for Dooling would work.

PLUS Jack, who has leadership, heart, penetration, and potential? That’s a bit too much for a backup PG.
Frye isn’t a bruiser, but you also don’t want someone clogging up the middle for Howard. Frye is soft, but had really good rebounding per-40 minutes stats and gives a good hard foul. He’s a GREAT shooter for a PF, and that inside/outside combo would be good for the Magic, no?
I’m sure you could do better than Frye, just adding some thoughts.

I was trying to get a reaction out of these Magic fans but there is no where near the visits here that we get on the BE. Switching picks and Dooling for Jack might be a good deal. It wouldn’t work contract wise because Dooling would want more than Jack is making right now.
I don’t know. You know I am a fan of JJ so I wouldn’t want to see him go just to see if another guy fit better. But Dooling might be the kind of defender we need on the perimeter.

Magic need for Power Forward
Orlandos’ need for a strong, defensive minded “Big” Forward, a player who can take some of the rebounding and intimidation responsibilities from Howard, is rather obvious. The fact that they went the entire season without such player, and still managed to win 52 games for the 3rd best record in the Eastern conference indicates the “strength” of that conference. Lewis and Turkoglu are both “Small” Forwards, and I love the possibility of moving Lewis, with all of his versatility, to the 2-guard position. After 2 years of Orlandos’ backcourt being bullied by bigger, stronger opponents in the playoffs, the need for a defensive upgrade in the backcourt is just as glaring as finding help for Howard “in the paint”. Rashard Lewis at the 2-Guard spot could just possibly be the key.
Upgrade the 2-Guard spot
Turkoglu doesn’t have the versatility or defensive inclinations to play the
‘big” guard position. Orlando MUST get stronger defensively in their backcourt. Jameer is a huge defensive liability with a large contract. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon. so let’s get him a big backcourt mate to help with some “stops” out on the perimeter. Anyway, the playoffs against Detroit proved that Maurice Evans is deffinately NOT what the Magic need at that position. The opportunity for Reddick to have more minutes is now upon us, if only as the first back-up off the bench.
