After a 1-10 start to this season, the Washington Wizards fired head coach Eddie Jordan, who had been the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference. His replacement, Ed Tapscott, helmed the Wizards in a convincing 124-100 win over the Golden State Warriors. Tapscott earned the nickname "Obama" for his resemblance to the President-Elect. Is he change the Wizards can believe in? Possibly. A victory over the surging Orlando Magic tonight would go a long way toward affirming that claim, tough.
The Magic face a bit of an uphill battle, as the Wizards have home-court advantage and an extra day of rest. Orlando's starters, including 34-year-old Anthony Johnson, played heavily last night in Philadelphia. Energy may present a problem.
I'm cutting this preview short because it's Thanksgiving and, frankly, I'm anxious to do things that do not involve my computer. Tip's at 8 on TNT; note that the game is not televised on either of the local networks. Dick Stockton, Mike Fratello, and David Aldridge will man the mic. Head to Bullets Forever for your Wizards fix. Go Magic, and happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving, all!
Sad anecdote: it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out the Wizards’ logo is supposed to be “d.c.” :| It looks more like an X…
Anyhoodle, go Magic and I hope everyone has a great day! \o/
thanks for the new background to my macbook 'shard's game winner.
any chance you have a hi-res version I could have?

Cowboys win! Time for the Magic to win!
Perfect sports day for me being a cowboys/magic fan.

after spending half of the afternoon in a nearly food-induced coma
I’m ready for some basketball! :D
a foul for Rasheed Lewis already
and Howard is then fouled and is shooting FTs…makes the fist, and the second :)
Hopefully we'll have a few more join the thread later on

lol I'm housesitting and using my sister's laptop
so I can watch the game and blog here at the same time
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 8:25 PM EST up reply actions
I'm here too... watching the NFL game on the projector, watching the magic on the flat screen
Loving life.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Nov 27, 2008 8:24 PM EST reply actions
If anything exciting happens in the Eagles/Cards game...
let us know Keyshawn… I don’t have the NFL Network.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:27 PM EST reply actions
got money on the magic -3, was surprised how small of a favorite they were.
Must be the combination of the road back to back / Jameer’s injury.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Nov 27, 2008 8:29 PM EST reply actions
plus a general underappreciation of the Magic
and wtf, really? The Wizards have won two games, for heaven’s sake.
and lol at the crowd booing JJ.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 8:30 PM EST up reply actions
Nah man...
The oddsmakers are actually very fair on the Magic, they’re usually big favorites on a nightly basis, especially when at home. I’m a little surprised at the respect they get in Vegas to be honest.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Nov 27, 2008 8:32 PM EST up reply actions
if I gambled on anything
I would be very poor :D I’m awful at it.
They probably are betting on the Wiz’s momentum after the coach change, plus the Magic’s inevitable collapse at one point.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 8:34 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah...
I guess the oddsmakers figure that the Wizards will be more competitive with a new coach also.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:31 PM EST reply actions
Man... JJ has sooo many shots that go inside the rim and pop back out.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Nov 27, 2008 8:31 PM EST reply actions
throwing it a little too much
or something, I’m hardly an expert…
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 8:32 PM EST up reply actions
DH the Man so far
… 11 points, 6 rebounds, and a block! Great start!
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:33 PM EST reply actions
I have a hard time telling JJ and Turk apart when they're on the floor
dark hair, similar builds, very white :3
Lee comes in near end of first
Turk's about 5 or 6 inches taller than J.J.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:39 PM EST reply actions
lol I know, and JJ's skinnier
I dunno why I have troube! Probably b/c I’m half blind, I’m sure.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 8:40 PM EST up reply actions
I'm surprised the Magic are doing so well
… thought they might be sluggish from playing last night and the late flight into DC.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:44 PM EST reply actions
14-0 Eagles, 2:27 left in the first.
Kurt Warner has quickly thrown 2 interceptions, quickly putting the “MVP” talk to rest.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Nov 27, 2008 8:47 PM EST reply actions
Great offensive first quarter by the Magic
… shooting 56% from the field and 37.5% from three point range.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:48 PM EST reply actions
Thanks for the update
… I’m sure McNabb must be doing better than his last few games.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:49 PM EST reply actions
Lewis and Turk are doing great
… combined for 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting in the first.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:50 PM EST reply actions
Bad start to the second for the Magic
Wizards outscoring them 7-0.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:52 PM EST reply actions
Wizards right back in it
… trailing the Magic just 38-34.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 8:53 PM EST reply actions
Yeah... only 2 of 9 FGs for the Magic in the second
Both baskets by Battie.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:03 PM EST reply actions
Johnson and Pietrus have combined for just 2 points
… at least AJ has a 5/0 assist/turnover ratio.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:06 PM EST reply actions
Magic lead back up to double digits
… after the Wizards pulled to within 4.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:14 PM EST reply actions
First half stats
Magic are shooting 49% (20 of 41) from the field and 36% from 3 point range. They also have 4 more free throws than the Wizards, along with a really good 14/5 assist/turnover ratio.
Wizards are shooting just 40% from the field, and 1 for 7 on threes.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:21 PM EST reply actions
thanks for those
seems like they were doing a lot worse. They were outscored 19-17 in the second, but in the end the Wiz couldn’t hold the Magic.
Let’s hope the second half goes well :-/

Looked like a cut or something... not sure
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:39 PM EST reply actions
yeah, I hadn't noticed it before
probably caused in some way by Dwight :p
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 9:40 PM EST up reply actions
he made a 3 earlier
he’s not scored a lot, but has a good assist/TO ratio
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 9:43 PM EST up reply actions
AJ isn't doing too bad
He only has 4 points but 5 assists to 0 turnovers.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:44 PM EST reply actions
Magic have control of the game now
… up 17. They are 6 of 8 shooting so far in the third.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:46 PM EST reply actions
let's hope the timeout doesn't slow them down again
it’d be nice if some of the starters could rest
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 9:47 PM EST up reply actions
lol I was just about to ask that
I’m still debating. I typically don’t like…you know, people, so probably no.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 9:48 PM EST up reply actions
I've gone the past couple of years and actually got quite a few deals.
However, this year the deals just aren’t there.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Nov 27, 2008 9:52 PM EST up reply actions
I'm going with the girlfriend
Waking up at 4:30. First time I’ve ever done it. Just gonna play follow the leader.
by magic fanatic on Nov 27, 2008 9:53 PM EST up reply actions
haha good luck with that
and be prepared to carry…well, everything. We females cannot resist a good sale.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 10:01 PM EST up reply actions
Just grocery shopping and out walking
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:48 PM EST reply actions
is it super cold in IL?
when I lived in Boston I avoided teh outdoors like the plague. Not that the heat in my apartment was worth a damn.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 9:50 PM EST up reply actions
You could hear a pin drop. It's like they're watching a play or the opera.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Nov 27, 2008 9:53 PM EST up reply actions
lol I've heard more crowd reactions in an opera
and yes, I have been to one
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 9:53 PM EST up reply actions
I was actually there in the early 2000s when Jordan was still playing and the crowd was NUTS.
then again, the greatest basketball player in the history of the world was on the floor, so…
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Nov 27, 2008 9:54 PM EST up reply actions
to be honest, I'm sure it's more to do with the record and the score than anything else
I like the Wizards and their fans. This game’s must be painful for them.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 10:00 PM EST up reply actions
It hit 45 here today
which is about normal. I went walking for 4 1/2 miles earlier… it was nice walking but the breeze made it feel cooler than it was.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:52 PM EST reply actions
it's actually about 40 here, thought much warmer in the day
the wind in Boston was killer omg. Just awful. Don’t miss it at all.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 9:54 PM EST up reply actions
The Magic have a very impressive 21/7 assist/turnover ratio
along with their 54% shooting from the field.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 9:59 PM EST reply actions
This game is in the bag
Nothing to discuss. I hope ya’ll have had a great Turkey Day. I’m thankful for having a team that will compete for the East this year. Go Magic, goodnight ya’ll.
Redick 1 for 6 from the field...
and 1 for 5 from three point range.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:06 PM EST reply actions
Magic outshooting the Wizards...
50% to 38% through three quarters. Magic outrebounding Wizards 40-35 and only have 7 turnovers.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:08 PM EST reply actions
even though I'm pretty sure the Magic are gonna pull this one out
I still have nothing better to do, and thus will stay and continue contributing my fascinating commentary for the blog
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 10:09 PM EST up reply actions
I’m not sure this blog could survive without your fascinating commentary :-)
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:11 PM EST reply actions
aww thanks XD
I could be writing my candidate statements for grad school, but…ehhhhh why be productive?
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 10:15 PM EST up reply actions
Stan should pull Dwight out soon
rest him a little. He doesn’t need to be out there anymore.
And a JJ turnover again rouses the crowd
seriously, the only time the crowd responds is when JJ gets the ball
It would amuse me to no end if he ever ended up playing there XD
I'm sure lots of their fans remember Redick from his Duke days
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:17 PM EST reply actions
lol yeah
I kinda like that there’s someone on the team that’s “hated”. For the most part when people think of the Magic, they think “likeable”. We need more “fierce” XD
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 10:20 PM EST up reply actions
Anthony Johnson... 10 assists, 0 turnovers!
If he can do that every game until Nelson comes back, I’ll be more than happy.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:22 PM EST reply actions
I totally agree
a good game from Johnson. He did what needed to be done.
by TheGiantSquid on Nov 27, 2008 10:23 PM EST up reply actions
With 7 minutes left, Dwight has 23 pts, 8/12 from the field, 14 rebounds, and is 7/11 from the FT line
5 turnovers for Redick
to go along with 7 points, 2 rebounds, an assist and a steal.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:26 PM EST reply actions
I think it's safe for SVG to empty the bench now
…up 17 with 2:36 left.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:34 PM EST reply actions
Pietrus...
17 points on 8 of 13 shooting, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:35 PM EST reply actions
Magic win 105-90! :D Happy Thanksgiving, all!
Enjoy my scintillating commentary, ’cause I am outta here!
Good win by the Magic...
just about everybody who played contributed something… four starters in double figures, AJ with 12 assists, and the bench with 18 points.
by Mike from Illinois on Nov 27, 2008 10:43 PM EST reply actions
Final stats
Magic outshot the Wizards 47% to 42% from the field, 32% to 18% from the three point line, and shoot 77% from the free throw line while making six more free throws than the Wizards.
They outrebound the Wizrds 49-46 and have a very good assist/turnover ratio of 24/11.
You all have a great night… Pacers come to Orlando on Saturday.
