Greg thinks this three-way deal between Cleveland, Orlando, and Portland would benefit all parties involved. The Magic get Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Steve Blake, and Nicolas Batum while giving up Hedo Turkoglu, J.J. Redick, Brian Cook, and Marcin Gortat. Dwight Howard shifts to power forward to make room for Ilgauskas at center.

I think the trade scenario is a genuinely bad idea for the Magic, considering the changes it would make to our current roster based on a flawed concept.

Bringing in Z to address the Power Forward slot is like killing a fly with a sledgehammer. He is a significant drain on offensive speed, gets worked over by smaller players and is not necessarily a better rebounder and scorer in the context of the Magic starters than Battie. As well, the Magic HAVE to give Battie a chance to play alongside Dwight and experiment with him in the starting lineup (big lineup with Hedo at SG).

He’s on the hook for nearly 2x as much salary as Hedo and his contract doesn’t expire till the end of next season.

As well, Dwight is not at a point where he has a 10-15ft offensive game which would is key if he is starting at PF. If you pickup Z, who likes to pop the foul line “jumper,” then Dwight still has no inclination on offense to play like a PF and will end up guarding the big man near the basket.

What is the point of bringing in Anthony Johnson and Milk Wilks if only to trade for Steve Blake? He’s a decent player, but not enough of an upgrade (even if tangential) in a mediocre trade scenario.

The Magic would be best served with getting Diogu or Frye from Portland instead of an old, creaky center and extras.

Trade Idea

I give props to the source that came up with this trade. It is genuinely thought out and would work for all teams involved.

Not to say I’d sign off on it, but there are some pluses to having Big Z aboard. For one, he is the perfect Center to have next to Dwight. He can stretch the floor and rebound very well. Plus, our interior D would be beastly. This is one of the reasons I was so bent on us drafting Koufas, but I digress.

The downer is giving up on our two Small Forward lineup so soon. We have seen it’s flaws but we’ve also seen it’s strengths, to the tone of a top 6 defense and offense, a division title, and the closest 4-1 loss in the semifinals that you’re likely to see. Sorry, but that is awful promising and with the addition of a big, defensive wing man in Pietrus and a big in Battie to help in the paint, I’m not willing to bail just yet.

Terrible

… I don’t dislike Big Z, but he simply does not fit into our system. Plus he’s not worth the price of Hedo. Sorry, I’ll pass. Batum is going to be a bust anyway …

i think its a bad idea all the way around if we could some how get a real good point guard i think we would be alot better but i dont like that deal at all turk is way more valuable than z blake is not that good at all and the other guy dont know nothing about him just my opionion

You have to give a little, take a little... Still, this trade makes no sense at least for Portland (and I doubt it does for the Magic)

My take: Redick is a shooter with pretty useless defense who has not yet arrived on an NBA level and plays only on 2, a position where we have no need at all (Roy is starting, Rudy Fernandez, Jerryd Bayless and if need be Martell Webster can back him up). Turkoglu of course is a big upgrade over Outlaw, but already 29 and as you are well aware wants to be paid next year when he plans to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent. So why trade for him now, if we would want him we can make him an offer in 2009 (at least $20+ million in cap space). And we get no replacement for Blake if we do that deal, who is somewhat of a backup disguised as a starter but doing a really solid job for his money, top 25 in the NBA in assists and top 10 in assists/turnovers. He is working hard on adding something to his game every year, and this off-season added strength to become a better defender. At one time Bayless might be the starting PG, right now he would not be ready for this. Next.
